He was the son of Clyde and Mary Maude Cornell, Dunlap. Curtis graduated from the Maquoketa Valley schools in 1970. He attended Harbor College in Los Angeles for 2 years. Curtis married Linda Berry at Peace Lutheran Church, Ryan, Iowa on June 8, 1973. The couple lived in California where Curtis worked in the construction business placing granite on commercial buildings. Tessa Michelle Smith, 21 years old, was called into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, February 17, at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, in Iowa City, Iowa.Tessa was born at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 18, 2002. She is the daughter of William “Bill” and Stephanie Smith of New Hartford, Iowa. She attended Dike-New Hartford Schools, graduating in 2021. She spent some of her free time helping at the Martin Memorial Library in New Hartford where she created a display of her monthly book recommendations. She was an avid reader and if she wasn’t able to find the book she wanted in any of the public libraries, she would buy it, read it, and donate it to one of the local libraries for others to enjoy. This brought her great happiness. Tessa was passionate about sharing the love of reading with everyone and talking about her favorite books and authors with others. She even created her own internet group called “A Bookaholic’s Review by Tessa” so she could share this love.Tessa loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed coordinating lunch dates, movie dates, and shopping dates. She cherished her special time with her mom and made sure their week was full of activities that she designed. Tessa loved weekly lunch with her grandparents, special game days with her grandma and great aunt, gator rides with dad to meet the neighbors at the pond, playing board games as a family, rooting for the Detroit Lions, and spending time with her special dog, Hydra and cat, Badger. Tessa’s strength was unwavering and her inspiration to others was endless.Left to cherish her memory are her parents, a brother, Tanner, and a sister Avery Smith, both of New Hartford. Grandparents Randy and Linda Bjerke of Waterloo, Grandma Michele “Mikki” Smith of Waterloo, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who absolutely adored her.She was preceded in death by her brother, Tate William Smith, Grandfather William “Willie” Smith and a cousin, Emma Smith.Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 23, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Parkersburg, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford. Ryta L. Piper, 92, longtime resident of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024. A gathering for family and friends will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with a memorial service to begin at 5:30 p.m. Private family graveside service will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Ryta’s memory. Ryta L. Shelton was born February 5, 1932, in Mosheim, Tennessee; daughter of Cloyce and Mary (McAmis) Shelton. On April 9, 1950, she married Fred M. Piper in Corydon, Iowa. Ryta was a loving, caring mother whose children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a fabulous cook, and her family has very fond memories of meals she prepared for them throughout the years. In her free time, Ryta loved to play bingo. She also spent time tending to her flowers, which always brought her joy. Her family includes her daughter, Pam (Glenn) Hinkhouse of West Branch; sons, Steven Piper of Port Orchard, WA, and Gary (Paula) Piper of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Brenda Piper of Iowa City; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, as well as extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, by her son, Gregory Piper, and by her siblings, Hilda Jones and Darrell Shelton.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home \u0026amp; Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa, with a visitation one hour prior. Coony was born on May 21, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Donald and Barbara (Soukup) Coonrod. He was a 1982 graduate of Springville High School. He had a passion for farming and mechanics. He also had two grandchildren that were his pride and joy. Coony will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. "Viola Clara Tschirgi, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Marion. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church in Hiawatha with an additional visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery in Elkader, Iowa. Viola was born on April 22, 1936, in Guttenberg, Iowa, the daughter of Aloysius and Sylveria (Harter) Goedken. She was a graduate of Lamont High School in Lamont, Iowa. In 1957, she was united in marriage to Karl Albert Tschirgi at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont. He died in July of 2000. Viola was a loving mother to three daughters, Patti, Barb, and Jean. She truly enjoyed being involved in her daughter’s lives. She was a leader and heavily involved in Brownies, Girl Scouts, and 4-H with her three girls. She taught her daughters to sew, cook, and other life skills. She also enjoyed, cards, knitting, crocheting, reading, making crafts for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Elkader) crafters group, socializing with her many friends, and especially seeing her grandkids and great grandkids. Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Patti (Dave) Sampson, Barb (Doug) Miller, Jean (Randy) Erb, all of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; sister, Rose Marie Wolf of Marion; brother, Joe (Paulette) Goedken; brother-in-law, Earl McDermott of Cascade, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Karl Tschirgi; siblings, Florian (Darlene) Goedken, Wilma (Herb) Burkle, Lavern Goedken (Mary McDermott), Mary Ann (Joe) Wichman; and brothers-in-law, Lynn Wolf, Verdeen, Jan, and Clair Tschirgi. Cremation will be accorded and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Saint John Paul II Parish in Kewanee, IL. The celebrant will be Fr. Chris Haake. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, February 23 at Rux Funeral Home, 507 S. Chestnut Street, Kewanee, IL. Inurnment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center where she got her rescue Khloe or to the family for a memorial to be established. Nicole was born April 13, 1987, in Watertown NY, the daughter of Wayne and Roxanne (Christian) Nash. She married David C. Bontrager on September 24, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colona, IL. He survives as well as her parents, Wayne and Roxanne Nash of Rock Island, her sister, Anna (Joshua) Pepping of Colona, her niece and goddaughter, Adelaide Pepping, her aunt, Cheryl Kerr of Kewanee, her uncles, Steve Christian of Geneseo and Greg (Laurie) Christian of East Moline, several cousins and her dog Riley. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John and Martha Christian, her paternal grandmother, Mary Chumbley, her uncle Richard Kerr, her cousin Steve Christian and her faithful companion, Khloe. Nicole graduated from Rock Island High School in 2005, the University of Illinois in 2009 and from St. Louis University in 2011. She had worked as a speech-language pathologist for Grant Wood AEA based in Cedar Rapids, IA. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City. She was an avid Fighting Illini Fan, an avid Chicago Cub and Bear Fan and a “losing team fan” of various sport teams. She recently became a Caitlin Clark fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team. She was an exceptional and patient counselor working with children with autism and special needs and she deeply loved her family and her niece and godchild, Adelaide. David Leon Spilger, 67, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday February 20, 2024 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Immediately following the graveside service everyone is invited to share in a luncheon to be held at the Atalissa Fire Station. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Atalissa Fire Department. David was born July 16, 1956 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Leland and Loretta (Volkman) Spilger. He was a graduate of West Liberty High School in 1975 and attended Muscatine Community College. David was united in marriage to Amy Harrington and together they had two children Christopher and Lydia, they later divorced. Dave had been employed with Ervin’s in Wilton as a plumber for 35 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atalissa and Atalissa Fire Department since 2010. He was a person who would always put others first, being the first to help and contribute as needed. Dave enjoyed fishing and was a collector of John Deere toy tractors (Ertl) and equipment, and using his John Deere equipment for his mowing business. Survivors include his two children: Christopher David Spilger of Milan, Illinois and Lydia Faye (Brad) Clark of Fruitland, grandchildren: Kynedi Spilger, Colin Spilger, Lylia Clark and Lochlan Spilger. His mother: Loretta and two brothers: Dan (Melissa) Spilger and Tim Spilger all of Atalissa as well as two nieces Jennifer, Katheryn and his significant other Leigh Ann Thomsen of Moscow. He was preceded in death by his father Leland in 2020.

His resilience and strength were evident, as he continued to be a steadfast presence on the job site until his body said it was time to rest.His life was filled with close-knit relationships, marked by his profound love for his family. Gregory leaves behind his adoring wife, Ketra Howard, his father, Bobby Howard, his children, Kayla Rae Weger Whitley and Nicholas Russell, a stepson, Jeremy James Cook, a brother, Derrick Howard, and his treasured grandchildren, Oliver Kent Raye Whitley and Violet Rose Luna Stone.Gregory's interests spoke to the soul of a man who cherished the simpler things in life: time spent with family, the joy of his grandbabies, collecting antiques, and finding value in the odds and ends others overlooked. His home, affectionately dubbed the "petting zoo," was filled with love, laughter, and the companionship of his faithful dog, Apollo, and the many pets he and his wife adored. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him and call him friend.
