Christine Tortorigi Martina

Dec 25, 1926 - Feb 29, 2024

location-icon

Birmingham, AL

We are sad to announce the passing of our mother, Christine Tortorigi Martina, lovingly known as "Ganny". She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emil J. Martina, "Marty". Christine is survived by her three daughters; Maria Knowles and husband James, Suzanne McFerrin and husband Jim, and Natalie Martina; grandchildren Melissa Gilmore and husband David, Michelle Dailey and husband J.P.,Michael Knowles and wife, Jessica, and Blake McFerrin. Christine has six great grandchildren; Margot, Eliza, John Emil, Vivian, Fletcher and Arthur. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Christine was born in Birmingham on Christmas Day, 1926 to Guiseppe and Rosaria Tortorigi. She was one of eight children. While dining at the Tutwiler Hotel, she noticed a handsome Air Force pilot whom she would go on to marry. They traveled the U.S. and Europe as he served his country. Upon Marty's retirement, they settled back in Birmingham, where they continued to raise their family. Christine was a devoted mother, devout Catholic, and a cherished friend to all who met her. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the lights of her life and she loved nothing more than gathering us all together for meals and laughter. Christine was a classic Italian mother who shared her traditions with family and friends. When Mom was in her eighties, she took her entire family on an adventure to Italy. We'll cherish those memories forever. We would especially like to thank the staff at St. Martin's in the Pines. They cared for our mom as if she was family. We love them all. Also, these last few months would have been unbearable without the constant care and guidance from first Falicia and then Lindsey with ProHealth Hospice. They are angels. Christine was a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and later Holy Infant in Trussville. There will be a graveside service on Monday, March 4 at 2:00 in the Veteran's section of Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville.

Dr. Robert Swaim Flowers, a poet, surgeon, and devoted father and husband, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, surrounded by family. World-renowned in his field of Plastic Surgery, “Dr. Bob” was a pioneer and developed many modern aesthetic surgical techniques. He was a church elder, lay pastor, amateur historian, philanthropist, and musician, but at his core he was an artist and a poet whose zeal for beauty colored everything he touched. Born on September 13, 1934, in Greenville Alabama, he was raised in his ancestral family home in Tuscaloosa known as the “Big House.” Dr. Bob went on to graduate from the University of Alabama, and, after an interlude at Southern Theological Seminary, graduated from the University of Alabama’s Medical College. After his service to his country, he completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic, and returned to the healing blue waters of the Pacific islands where he raised his four sons and built a thriving surgical practice. After more than forty years, Dr. Bob returned home to Birmingham and the red clay of Alabama. Psalms 23The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
