Ruth N. Goulden, 89, of Sumner, died Monday, September 11, 2023, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. Private family services will be held at Garden of Memories in Waterloo. Ruth Naomi, daughter of Rev. Homer and Bessie (Smith) White was born January 31, 1934, in Decatur, Illinois. She received her education in the Decatur Schools and later received her G. E. D. Ruth married Donald Dean Hunt and to this union a son was born, Michael. The couple later divorced. Ruth assembled lamps at Kay's Lamp Co. in Long Beach, California for many years. In the late 1970's she was united in marriage with Norm Goulden. Ruth was a longtime resident of California until moving to Sumner in 2008 to be closer to her family. She enjoyed knitting and crossword puzzles. Ruth is survived by her son, Michael (Rita) Hunt of Sumner; three grandchildren, Melissa (Chad) Stange of Waucoma, Jeremey (Nikki Nieland) of McGregor and Matthew (Amber) Hunt of Sumner; eleven great-grandchildren, Katelin (Nick) Ryan, Carver, Renley, Josie, Brodie, Adam, Ethan, Dylan, Nolan and Logan; three great-great grandchildren, Hadley, Hazel and Hudson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Norm; and siblings, Esther, Paul, Mary, James, Samuel, and David.

John Martin Riordan age 79 of rural Westgate passed away December 1, 2023 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Sumner, Iowa with family by his side. John was born March 11, 1944 in Waterloo the son of Edward and Jean (Kloster) Riordan. He attended and graduated from Dunkerton Community Schools. He attended Upper Iowa University where he received his Bachelor's Degree. John proudly served his country in the U. S. Army from 1962 to 1964. He married Leta Bartholomew on June 16, 1966, she preceded him in death in 2007. John was a "Jack of all Trades" during his working career. The list included, teacher, welder for Hauptly Construction, insurance agent for Prudential and selling modular homes for Coach Light Homes in Cedar Falls. John was a very down to earth man his faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He was a very caring person and will be remembered for his kind gestures to people who were important to him. He is survived by his seven children; Amy (Denny) Killoren of Pella, Meg (Brad) Dolf of Westgate, Bob (Shawna) Riordan of Whittier, North Carolina, Paul (Gwen) Riordan of Fairbank, Tom (Jenny) Riordan of Waterloo, Lois (Zac) Tyler of Westgate and Joan (Dave) Jensson of Holland, 20 grandchildren, three siblings; Mike Riordan of Rudy, Arkansas, Sue (Jim) Hauptly of Dunkerton and Peg (Steve) Watson of Hollister, Missouri, four sisters-in-law; Marcia (Rich) Young of Dubuque, Elaine Clark, Jeanette (Jim) Grady both of Waterloo and Lois Bartholomew of Franksville, Wisconsin, along with many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two sisters-in-law; Dee Lenz and Peg Riordan. 4:00-7:00 PM Monday December 4th at Woods Funeral Home in Fairbank. Willard Kenneth Orvella of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Hillcrest Home in Sumner, Iowa. He was 98. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. , Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a. m. - 10:30 a. m. at the Church on Saturday. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Washington Prairie Lutheran church or Washington Prairie Cemetery fund. Willard, son of Helmer and Cora Stoen Orvella, was born May 17, 1925, on his parents' farm one mile south of Washington Prairie Church. He was baptized into the Christian faith at his home by the Reverend Paul Koren and was later confirmed in his faith at Washington Prairie. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Decorah Senior High School in 1944. He was an active 4-H member, and he enjoyed spending his summers playing on the Nordness baseball team. On February 8, 1953, Willard married Eloise Blegen. Together they had four children: Mary, Kathy, Jim, and Larry. They enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. Willard also enjoyed playing cards and trout fishing. Willard was very involved in agriculture throughout his life. He began farming with his father on the farm east of Decorah on Highway 9. He eventually took over the farming operation and spent his working life there growing crops, milking cows, and raising hogs. In both 1950 and 1953 he won the Master Corn Growers award for Winneshiek County for having the best corn yield. He was a life-long member of Farm Bureau and served as its local treasurer for 26 yearsWillard's faith and his participation in church activities were very important parts of his life. As a young man he took an active part in the physical construction of the parish hall at the church in the late 40's. He took part in quarrying the stones used in the building, transporting them to the building site, and mixing the mortar used in construction. He also held various offices and positions at church, among them: deacon, trustee, member of the Board of Education, and janitor. When it was necessary to replace the church roof in 1997, Willard and Eloise, together with Orville and Dorothy Halverson, made and sold 5,600 lefse to help raise the money. Willard is survived by two daughters: Mary (John) Sersland of Sun City West, Arizona, and Kathy (Rick) Gloede of Sumner, Iowa; two sons: Jim Orvella and Larry (Jane) Orvella, both of Decorah; seven grandchildren: Peter Sersland, Eva (Cody) Hagan, Zachary (Melissa) Sersland, Heather Gloede, Anthony (Britney) Gloede, Andy (Laura Kos) Orvella, Rebecca (Matthew) Moore; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lillian Bruvold and Arlys (Wayne) Soeder; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise; his parents, Helmer and Cora Orvella; and one granddaughter, Maria Ann Orvella.Show more

Mari M. Eitel, 66, of Maynard, Iowa, died suddenly on Wednesday evening, November 23, 2022, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held in early January. Online obituary at www. jamisonschmitzfuneralhome. com Mari Margaret O'Day was born December 28, 1955, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred William "Bud" O'Day and Lorraine Jean (Omann) Griffith. She graduated from West Central High School in Maynard in 1974. Mari married Jerry Eitel on November 29, 1975, and they remained married for 20 years. Mari later graduated from Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar where she worked as a distance learning secretary until her retirement. Following her retirement, Mari loved working as a para educator at West Central School in Maynard where she was known to all the children as "Grandma Mari. " Mari was loved by everyone she came across. She loved her friends & getting together, her girls' trips, sitting on her porch or back room listening to blues or classic rock on her vinyl records, or just visiting and catching up. She was Irish through and through and put her family and friendships above all. She was especially proud of being recognized as a Lady of Kerry. Her grape jelly was northeast Iowa famous, and if you were lucky enough to get a meal from her, you could feel the love coming from it. Mari was also proud of her yard, flowers, and garden, and could be found tending those things with care in the summer months if she wasn't taking a road trip or attending an outdoor concert with friends. Her favorite thing, however, was always spending time with her family, whether it was hosting dinners, cheering on her grandkids at their sporting events, hosting sleepovers, making grandma sandwiches, or following their whereabouts on social media. Mari was incredible at making friends wherever she went, was thoughtful to all she cared about, and went out of her way to show it. She passed that down to Amy & Jacob, which is apparent in the outpouring of love and support shown during this difficult time. She will be incredibly missed by all who knew her. Kathryn Kay Ragsdale, 79 of Sumner, Iowa, passed away on November 17, 2022. She was diagnosed with cancer in May and was in her home up until the time of her passing. Kathy was born on February 1, 1943, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Orin and Orra (Holcomb) Krie. She attended school in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1961. On November 20, 1961, she was united in marriage to Gordon Ragsdale at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Waterloo. After their marriage, Kathy made her home in Waterloo while Gordon served in the Army. Upon his return, Kathy and Gordon lived in Waterloo until 1967, when they moved to an acreage outside of Tripoli. Kathy and Gordon moved to Sumner in 2004. Gordon passed away on October 17, 2019. Kathy worked for the Tripoli Schools for almost 25 years as a janitor, retiring in June of 2021. She truly enjoyed her time with the students and faculty. As a hard worker, Kathy always seemed to be working and she especially enjoyed working outside. She enjoyed tending to her garden, feeding the chickens, tending to the horses, or splitting wood. She also spent her time collecting vintage dolls and most recently had been collecting American Girl dolls. A very proud moment for her and her family was when she obtained her driver's license for the first time in 2020. Kathy is survived by three sons, Russell Ragsdale and Timothy Ragsdale, both of Sumner, and Daniel Ragsdale of Anamosa; five grandchildren, Matthew Ragsdale, Brittany (Darien) Chesser, Marcus (Hannah) Ragsdale, Amanda Ragsdale and Macy Ragsdale; four great grandchildren, Cassadee and Layla Chesser; and Evy and Eirah Ragsdale; and a sister, Carol Turner of Fredonia, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Ragsdale; her parents Orin and Orra Krie; and a brother, William Krie. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p. m. on Monday, November 28, 2022, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly Pastor Corey Smith officiating. There will be a memorial visitation prior to the service from 11:00 a. m. to 1:00 p. m. at the funeral home. Burial of her cremains will be held in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
