Russell F. Boren, Sr. , 91, of Oneonta, AL. , passed away on September 10, 2023. Russell loved Auburn, Blount County, all churches, and most of all - his family. Russell was born and raised in Hayden, AL. He attended St. Bernard High School from where he graduated a semester early. He went straight into college attending St. Bernard Jr. College for three semesters. He went on to get a Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University in December of 1954. Russell worked as an engineer in the late 50's and early 60's for Blount County. Russell worked for Debardeleben Coal Cooperation until he and his uncle formed Pawnee Construction Company. After five years, they left and started Dixie Drilling Cooperation in 1966, and in 1968 they also formed Apache Machine and Supply Company as well as Apache Construction. A little later in 1972, Russell also started Boren Explosives Company. In 1990, he formed a joint venture and worked with Dyno Noble, until he sold them his part and Boren Explosives Company in 2018. After 50 plus years, Russell elected to liquidate both Dixie Drilling and Apache Construction in 2021. During this time, Russell was also in commercial real estate before he and his sons purchased Limestone Springs in 2020, after living there since 2008. Throughout his years, Russell also owned several coal mines, was involved in the trucking business, and owned Boren Trucking. He is preceded in death by wife Hazel Boren; son Fred Boren, Jr. ; great grandson Connor Wilson. He is survived by son Patrick F. Boren; grandchildren Amanda Boren, Andrea Boren, Rachel Little (Kevin), Olivia Boren, Russell Boren III; great grandchildren Ryder Little; brother Jerry Boren (Nelda); daughter-in-law Janie Boren; brother-in-law Charles Puckett. The family would like to send a special thanks to Sara Moore. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Lemley Funeral Home from 5:15 PM until 8:00 PM. Russell Boren, Sr. will lie in state at Oneonta First Baptist Church on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the church beginning at 1:00 PM with Dr. Larry Gipson presiding. Burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the many employees throughout the years of all the Boren Companies. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Blount County Education Foundation (P. O. Box 603, Oneonta, AL. 35121) or to the Blount County Children's Center (P. O. Edna Pearl Self Slatton, aged 90, of Remlap AL, passed away Dec 2, 2023 with her family by her side. Her husband served in the US Army for the first 18+ years of their marriage. During this time they lived in many places across the US, before settling back in Alabama. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, needlepoint, cooking, crossword puzzles and working in the garden. In her early 40's, Edna decided to earn a degree, she graduated with honors from Jefferson State. She worked several jobs in her life, but her greatest job was being the best mother to her 4 children and nothing took precedence over that job. She had many names: Eddie, Mama, Mom, Grandmama, NaNa, and Nanny. Preceding her in death were her husband Grady Slatton; parents Ed and Alma Self. Survivors include her sons Steve Slatton (Dottie) of Chelsea; Grady Ray Slatton of Remlap; Daughters Sharon Loftis Marsh (Johnny) of Guntersville; Teresa Bryant (Phil) of Austin, Texas; Grandchildren Steven Slatton (Megan) of Chattanooga; Jessica Yother (Ben) of Vestavia; Sarah Worster (Brian) of Chelsea; Seth Slatton (Meagan) of Cypress, TX; Lara Wallace (Chip) of New Hope; Cody Loftis (Brittney) of Arab; Isabella Bryant of Austin, TX; 1 LT Ethan Bryant (Nina) of Clarksville, TN; Dylan Bryant of Smyrna, GA. Great Grandchildren Stella, Pia, Will, and Masie Slatton; Ayden, Reid, Charlotte and Laurel Yother; Tyler, Aaron, and Lauren Worster; Lyla and Cooper Wallace; Will Loftis. Kenneth Wayne Teal was called home by his Heavenly Father to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 24, 2023 at the age of 83. He was born in Cleveland, Alabama on February 29, 1940 to Marion and Effie (Blackwood) Teal. He often joked about how young he was because he only had a true birthday every four years. Kenneth graduated from Cleveland High School in 1960. He was an athlete participating in all sports, in particular he was a standout football player. It was at Cleveland High School that he met the love of his life, Miss Charlene McWhorter. Kenneth married his high school sweetheart, Charlene, on September 9, 1961. They were blessed with two daughters, Carlene and Sharon. Kenneth was a hard working family man. He worked and became a Master Pipefitter and even taught welding at the union's apprentice school in Birmingham. Kenneth also worked hard on his farm and did welding jobs for people in the community. He was well known in the local Five Points Community and beyond for his generosity and his willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. Kenneth was a member of Rosa Methodist Church. He was a member of the Dry Creek Masonic Lodge and had served in the past as a Master. He advanced through the Order of the Scottish Rite and then the Zamora Shrine. Kenneth was proceeded in death by his parents, Marion and Effie (Blackwood) Teal, his Aunt Elzie Robertson, who he regarded as a second mother, and Evelyn Ellis who mentored and encouraged him to become the great man he was. Most importantly, he lost his youngest daughter, Sharon Dianne Teal, tragically on November 21, 2021 and never overcame the grief of her death. Kenneth is survived by his sweetheart, Charlene (McWhorter) Teal. They had just celebrated 62 years of marriage. He is also survived by his oldest daughter Carlene (Frank) Williamson. He was loved and cherished by his grandchildren Rachel, John, Paul, and Laura Williamson. He will be deeply missed by many other family members and friends. Services were held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Rosa Methodist Church with the Reverend Jerry Gargus officiating. Interment was at Mt. Joy Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Jude Research Hospital or the Shriner's Hospital for Children.Show more

Don Richard Curtis, 84, of Oneonta, AL. , passed away on November 23, 2023. He is preceded in death by parents Alanzo and Praise Arp Curtis; wife Marilyn Clair Harrington Curtis. He is survived by children Donna Quintal (Bob), Terri Smith Rives, Tammy Shoffner (Johnny), Joy Smith, Ricky Curtis (Martha), Kim Curtis Kay (Doyle), Michael D. Theresa Mae Lipscomb, 64, of Oneonta, AL. passed away on November 24, 2023 after a year-long battle with breast cancer. Although born in Florida, Theresa lived the majority of her life on Straight Mountain. She graduated from Appalachian High School in 1977. She worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years as a Customer Service Representative for State Farm Insurance as well as an Agent for Alfa. After she retired she worked for Evan's Florist which she absolutely loved. Theresa was a woman of faith who loved the Lord. She attended Anchors Church where she enjoyed attending Sunday School and fellowshipping. Many would describe her as sweet and spunky. She was also known to be a fashionista, loving leopard print especially. She enjoyed shopping, gardening and was Rod Stewart's biggest fan. Most of all she enjoyed being with her family. She never missed an opportunity to attend events for her grandchildren who affectionately called her Granny, Ganny or Granny Gram. When each of them were small she would often tell them stories and always begin it with "there once was a beautiful grandmother" and that she truly was to those who loved her. She always believed being a grandmother was her greatest achievement. Left to cherish her memories are husband, Vandall E. Lipscomb; daughters, Carri Buchanan (Wes) and Lindsey Clay (Dee); grandchildren, Austin Vick, Cameron Vick, Garrison Littleton, Peyton Henderson, Harper Guzman, Aiden Vick, Maddie Buchanan, Evan Buchanan, Xander Garrison, Briggs Vick and Dentson Hogeland; father, Fred Fiessler (Teresa); siblings, Bruce Fiessler (Kathy), Freddie Fiessler (Freda), Melesa Sheffield; step siblings, Bonnie Hawkins (Scotty), Mexi Green (Jimmy), Mary Putman (Scotty); chosen family, Brandon Vick (Jessica), Quentin Hogeland (Chyenne); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by grandparents, Louis Jefferson and Rena Mae Holloway Duncan, and Rudolph and Elizabeth Fiessler; mother, Annie Louise Fiessler and baby sister Ann Fiessler. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 11AM at Anchors Church in Oneonta with Pastor Bill McDonald officiating.
