Lantz. She is predeceased by her biological mother, Mrs. Virginia Allen, and dear brother Michael Allen. Mrs. Brooks was the beloved wife of Merrill R. Brooks for more than 60 years; devoted mother to her son, Keith, and daughter, Mrs. Kelly Honerkamp; dear sister to Ms. Joyce Shoffner; and loving grandmother to four grandchildren. Dixie Barefoot Britton, 87, of Clinton, NC, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Hampstead, NC, on Thursday, February 15, 2024.She was born in Newton Grove, NC, on October 14, 1936, the daughter of the late Simon and Flonnie Westbrook Barefoot. Also remembered is her husband, Jesse Britton, and two sons, Terry McLamb and Eric Britton, all of who preceded her in death.Surviving is her daughter, Patricia Barnes and husband Gary of Hampstead, NC; two brothers, Simon Wayne Barefoot and wife Kathy and Glenn Barefoot and wife Janet; five grandchildren, Andrew Johnson, April Barnes and husband David, Simon McLamb and wife Selena, TJ McLamb and wife Jinny, and Patrick McLamb and wife Iris; and twelve great-grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church in Clinton, NC, on Monday, February 19, 2024 at 2:00 pm. Hall, Sr., 89, of Hampstead, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024.He was born September 20, 1934, in Weirsdale, FL, to the late Leonard Hall and Magnus Dees Hall.Robert was a proud veteran and served in the US Air Force. He loved feeding his deer and helping his neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Cleo Davis Hall and four siblings.Survivors include his son, Robert E. Hall, Jr. (Connie); daughter, Judy Hall (Wayne); seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a sister.A funeral service will be held at 2pm, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Andrews Hampstead Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour prior.Burial will follow at Sea Lawn Memorial Park.

Warner Gordon Batson

Warner Gordon Batson, 90, of Hampstead, NC, departed this life peacefully on January 28, 2024, surrounded by family. Warner was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all. Warner was born on April 26,1933 to Robert Cecil and Geneva Player Batson in Philadelphia, PA. He spent most of his childhood in Wilmington, NC and attended New Hanover High School. He proudly served in the US Army from 1953-1955 and bravely fought in the Korean War. He was a valued member of the military community in Hampstead, NC, where he served as the Treasurer for American Legion Post 167 for several years while in his 80’s. Warner had a true passion for entrepreneurship and instilled a strong work ethic in everyone around him. He created several small businesses in areas that included home remodeling and climate systems. In his free time, he found joy in reading and historical research. Warner was the “family encyclopedia,” holding extensive knowledge about family ancestry which he was happy to share with others. Warner was an avid reader; his personal library was truly a sight to behold. He taught his children and grandchildren to always be curious and never stop learning. He led by example when he built a computer from scratch at age 76. He was a caring and generous person who made friends everywhere he went. He was a kind man with a great sense of humor and a hearty laugh that will be missed by all. Warner is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda Jordon Batson; children: Caroline Enterline, Diane Hartley, Daniel Batson and Elizabeth Carranza (husband Ali); sister, Joyce Batson Schoenick; grandchildren: Mark Enterline, Jacklyn Enterline Fekeci (husband Nick), Andrew Jeffers (wife Jessica), Shana Jeffers, Emma Hartley and Griffin Hartley; and his newborn great-granddaughter Delilah Fekeci all of whom he deeply loved and cherished. Warner was preceded in death by his first wife Joan, his father Robert Cecil, his mother Geneva, and his brothers Dexter and Ronald. A memorial service to celebrate and honor Warner's life is taking place on February 12 at 10am in Spring Arbor’s Memory Care Unit in Williamsburg, VA and he will be placed next to his first wife, Joan, on March 8 in a graveside service at 2pm, Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, VA.

Justin Page Grissom, 36, of Hampstead, NC passed away January 30, 2024, to fish on heaven’s shores. He was born February 12, 1987, in Wilmington, NC. He leaves behind his son Dallas Grissom, Mother Valerie Grissom, Father Tex Grissom, Nana Dorothy Watson, Aunt Dee Ivey, and first cousin Kaylee Sellars. Justin was a graduate of Topsail High School and former employee of his father’s shop, Tex’s Tackle, before starting his own business, Grissom’s tree and tractor service. Justin will always be remembered for his kindness, unselfishness and giving heart. He’d always lend a hand to anyone and never met a stranger in his life. He was a proud southern boy who could always be found riding dirt bikes or four wheelers down country roads, fishing for catfish in the river or drum in the surf, and hunting with his dad, Tex, and son, Dallas, who he was extremely proud of. He loved nature and the simple things in life like the dandelions he picked for his mother Valerie since childhood, walks in the woods, cookouts with family and friends while playing horseshoes, and throwing the cast net out with his son.The next time you are fishing and having a cold beer or taking a boat ride, remember Justin.Service will be announced at a later time. Barbara Williams Wicker of Hampstead passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2024. Barbara was born on January 22, 1941, to Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Williams, of Anderson, Indiana. After a quick month long, whirlwind romance in Indiana, she married the love of her life (57 years), Robert Brooks Wicker, III, of Sanford, NC. The couple immediately relocated to the beautiful coastal area of Scotts Hill, NC where they raised their lovely daughters Elizabeth Ann (Wicker) Gardner and Suzanne Brooks Wicker. They eventually were blessed with a beloved son-in-law, Derek Gardner, which they call their son.Barbara’s charisma was infectious and contagious. She was extremely outgoing and energetic. She lit up a room wherever she arrived. After a rewarding career with UNC-Wilmington, she enjoyed living the retirement life where she doted on her grandchildren, Derek, Jr. and David Brooks (sons of Beth and Derek Gardner). Barbara and Brooks spent many afternoons walking the shores of South Topsail Island. She loved to dance with her Topsail Tapper Group and was a fast-paced card player and enjoyed playing bridge with her Belvedere and Olde Point Bridge friends. Barbara cherished her long walks every morning in her Mallard Bay neighborhood where she loved socializing with neighbors. She also looked forward to sipping her evening glass of wine on her back porch with Brooks watching the boats go by and the sun setting. Barbara was musically talented with a gift for the piano and enjoyed the fellowship of church family. She was a 45-year member of Scotts Hill Wesleyan Chapel and volunteered many hours in the kitchen, nursery, and more often than not, she was on the front pew singing from the top of her lungs. Barbara wishes for her love of family and community to continue through her sorority sisterhood that she was so passionate about. Please in lieu of flowers make donations to P.E.O. Barbara Decker Zerby

Barbara Decker Zerby, 76, of Hampstead, North Carolina (formerly of Batavia), passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024 surrounded by family in her home. Barb was born January 12, 1948 to Dr. Robert and Jeannette (Estrin) Decker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was united in marriage to Stephen P. Zerby on October 20, 1973.Barb and Steve had the most unusual of meet-cutes in an ICU waiting room. They were married less than two years later. Barb worked for a short time as a special education teacher, working with brain-injured children. Once they started a family of their own, Barb stayed home with their three children. It wasn’t until the loss of Barb’s mother to brain cancer and navigating her subsequent grief that Barb found her true passion and life’s work: Hospice. Barb started at Fox Valley Hospice in Batavia but spent the majority of her career with St. Thomas Hospice in Hinsdale, IL. Barb was deeply passionate about the work that Hospice does to care for families and to help people die with dignity. She worked as a Volunteer Coordinator and her greatest joy was teaching classes on death and dying.One of the most extraordinary things was Barb’s ability to care for others even as she so courageously fought her own battle with cancer for nearly 27 years. She was strong, tenacious and persevered in all things.When Barb wasn’t working (and particularly after she retired), she spent most of her time playing Bridge. Some of her dearest friends over the years have been her bridge partners. Barb also enjoyed traveling, reading, and competitively challenging her family and friends to Wordle each day.Barb is survived by her deeply devoted and loving husband of over 50 years, Steve Zerby, their children: Geoffrey (Clare Rodgers) Zerby, Matthew (Amber) Zerby and Rev. Jennifer Zerby; their grandchildren: Caden, Tage, Zachary, Bennett, Emery, and Annelise Zerby and Alex and Evie Rodgers; her brother, Dr. Lawrence (Louise) Decker, several nieces and nephews and countless dear friends.She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Jeannette.A memorial service will take Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 11am at Batavia Covenant Church, 1314 Main Street, Batavia, IL. 60510 with a luncheon to follow. Officiating the service will be Rev.
