Mrs. Ruby Campbell Hooker went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, October 5, 2023. She was born on February 5, 1933 in Lykesland, South Carolina to Willie Cleve and Maggie Roberts Campbell. The funeral service for Ruby Campbell Hooker, will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 9:00 AM at Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209, with burial in the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Thompson Funeral Home. Ruby graduated from Columbia High School before working as a secretary to the Post Chaplain of Ft. Jackson for several years. In 1952, she married John L. Hooker and the two cherished 71 years together. They worshiped and served in Macedonia Baptist Church of Columbia and in a number of other Baptist churches during their life together. Their life in Florida was filled with amazing opportunities of Christian service as well as hunting and fishing. Ruby worked in churches, Christian schools, and served as Church Organist, and John enjoyed solo and choir music as well as serving as Deacon for many years. John L. was Vice President of McDonald Air Conditioning, Inc. for almost 40 years before his retirement and their return to Columbia. After returning to Columbia, Ruby served as secretary at Windsor United Methodist Church, Bayview Baptist Church, and Columbia College. She then served as Media Specialist at Spring Valley Baptist Church where she and John L. were members and served in various positions. After Ruby re-retired, she and her John L. enjoyed years of membership and worship at First Baptist of Columbia. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ruby and John L. enjoyed their lives together filled with CARING, LOVING, AND SERVING! Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Jodi Lynn Keller (Ken); son, Kevin D. Hooker (Sabrina); granddaughters, Shannon Barton (Bill), Lesli McMakin (Austin), and Hope Bizzaco (Anthony); great-grandchildren, Collin Pfennig, Karter Barton, Anthony Bizzaco III, and soon to be born John Waylon McMakin; sisters, Mary Maresca and Sarah Watterson; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, numerous cousins, her church family and many friends who will miss her dearly. Ruby is predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Campbell; her husband, John L. Hooker; her son, John Kenneth Hooker; her brother, Alvin Campbell; her sister, Nita Jacobs; and granddaughter, Kimberly Keller. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia Television Ministry, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, in Ruby's memory.

Mr. Hook died on Monday, November 27th, 2023. Born in the Red Bank Community of Lexington, SC, he was the son of the late Reedy Olin Hook, Sr. and Mertice Celeste Boozer Hook. Mr. Hook was a self-employed delivery service for several dry cleaners in Columbia with routes around Winnsboro, Batesburg, and Lexington areas for over 41 years. He retired in the fall of 1988 while working with Deluxe Cleaners. He was a lifetime member of Red Bank Baptist Church and a past member of Red Bank Community Club. Mr. Hook served as a Staff Sargent in the Lexington Chapter of South Carolina National Guard for six years. He always enjoyed attending gospel singings around the state and loved traveling. He was a very generous man who helped many. Mr. Hook is survived by his sister-in-law, Bettie Hook of Ravenel, SC; nephews, Terry Hook (Shawn) of Lexington, Steve Scott (Janet) of Durham, NC, Doug Scott of Durham, NC, and Marty Hook of Edisto Island, SC; nieces, Kristie Joyner (Gene) and Anita Kilmury (Bruce), all of Lexington, SC, and Jill Maghan (Sean) of Chapin, SC and their children/grandchildren. Mr. Hook is also survived by his very special friend, Verna Tinsley of Lexington. He was predeceased by his wife, Wilma E. Hook; his brothers, Jarvis N. Hook (Colene Smith) of Lexington, R. O. Hook, Jr. of Ravenel, SC; and sister, Edith Hook Arledge (Jack) of Durham, NC. Services for John (Johnny) William Hook will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, November 30th, 2023 at Red Bank Baptist Church located at 1357 South Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29073. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Ministry of Red Bank Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Red Bank Baptist Church, 120 Community Drive, Lexington, SC 29073. Babern C. Jones was born in Vivian, Louisiana, on August 18, 1935. He was the son of Rush and Mary Jones. He spent most of his childhood in Kilgore, Texas and enjoyed the simple life of rodeos and country music. In high school, Babern played football, basketball, and ran track. He also performed in the Texas All State Choir. He was very proud to be called a Veteran as he served his country in the United States Army. Afterwards, he was employed as a comptroller for Lanier Construction, Clark Heating and Air, and LAD Construction Company. He was a dedicated man to his friends, work, and family. He served as a choir director and a deacon for many years at Earlewood Baptist Church and most recently was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia. He was an outstanding musician and songwriter, writing songs for Sonny James and Marie Osmond. He had a beautiful bass voice and recorded songs of his own. His children can still sing every word of his many songs. He enjoyed countless musical festivals, performances, concerts, and Louisiana Hayrides with many well-known musical artists, including Sonny James and the Southern Gentlemen, Slim Whitman, Mickey Gilley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jimmy Swaggert to name a few. Recently, he reflectively told his family, "I've been lots of places; I've seen lots of people. It's been a blast. And it's been a ride. " Babern will be remembered for his musical talent, entertaining personality, and kindheartedness as he would give you anything he had. We will miss him deeply. Babern was preceded by his parents, his brother, Marvin Cook, and sister, Wanda Jones. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Jones of Cayce; three daughters, Donna Hunter (Paul) of Lexington, Vicki Traufler of Lexington, and Cheryl Vello (David) of Lexington; five grandchildren, Ashley Hunter, Adam Hunter (Tiffany), Joshua Traufler, Lauren Hayes (Sam), and Matthew Vello; and one great-grandson, Walker Allen Hayes born just a few days ago on November 25, 2023.Show more

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at her residence, while surrounded by her beloved family. She was born in Ha Noi, Vietnam to the late Tran Thi Sam and Hoang Ba Luu. She was one of 11 children. Mary was a kindergarten teacher in Vietnam before immigrating to the United States for religious freedom and a better future for her family. She was an active member of St. Martin de Porres in Columbia, South Carolina, and a church in Vietnam where she served the community faithfully. She was very committed to a mission to help others; she supported orphanages, those in need, and the Catholic community in Vietnam to name a few. Her love, kindness, and generosity was felt by the many people she helped and encountered. Mary was known for her devotion to her faith and family, giving good advice, wittiness, and her cooking. She made the best thit kho, a Vietnamese dish, a skill unfortunately only a few of her children inherited. She was the devoted wife of her late husband, Paul Cuong Vu, married for over 41 years and they are now reunited in Heaven. Mary is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Hoang Dung Vu and Quy Trinh, Mai Vu, Scott Vu and Trang Nguyen, Lieu Michelle Pham and Giang Pham, Bic Vu, Lisa Bich Hai Vu, and Nga (Amy) Dwork and Jeremy Dwork. She was loved and adored by her many grandchildren: Trinh Victor Vu, Trinh Vincent Vu and Louisa Tse, Trinh Daniel Vu, Teresa Bui and Mitchell Narte, Michelle Tuyet Bui, Ethan Bui, David Vu, Sarina Vu, Lilly Vu, PJ Pham, Zoey Pham, Simon Ho, Jayden Ho, William Dwork, and Elliott Dwork. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. For prayers, please pray for her saint name, Maria. The family would like to say a special thank you to the medical staff who have taken exceptional care of Mary Vu throughout these years. Words cannot express our gratitude for all you have done.
