Shirley L. (McGee) Dyer 86, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024 at David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, OH. She was born in Memphis, TN on December 14, 1937 to the late Louvenia (Roby) Carson. During her childhood the family moved from Memphis, TN, to Kansas City, KS, then to Cleveland, OH and finally settling in Ashtabula, OH in 1949. Shirley attended Division Street School and Ashtabula High School. Later on she met and married Valgene P. Dyer in 1954, during their union they were blessed with seven children. Shirley retired from Ashtabula County Nursing Home where she worked as a nursing aide. But retirement didn't last long. She went back to work because she enjoyed keeping busy. Shirley also worked at the voting polls during elections. She loved to dance, sing, read, shop, do word search puzzles, listen to music which she enjoyed different genres, and spend time with her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Shirley was also a member of Peoples Baptist Missionary Church. She was part of the New Spirit Choir, a faithful member of the Pastor's aide committee where she served as president for two years, and part of the church culinary committee. Survivors include her children Valerie, Dee Dee, Craig, and Darlene Dyer all of Ashtabula. Siblings Darnetta Bennett of Charleston, SC, Denita Fields of Ashtabula, and Tari Rodriguez of Erie, PA. And a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her mother, children Jennifer Dyer, Calvin, Dyer, and Janice Dyer, her brother Micheal Carson, Sister Violetta McGee, grandchildren Calvin Dyer Jr., Devere Dyer, and DeAuntrè Dyer. Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Peoples Baptist Church 3837 West Ave, Ashtabula, Ohio with Funeral service to follow at 11:00am. LESTER A. BALLARD, M.D.Lester was born on August 31, 1929 to the late Mildred (nee McCullour) and Lester Sr. and passed away March 2, 2024. Loving father of Brent (Ann) and Julie Gordon (Scott), cherished grandfather to Brent Ballard Jr. (Neena), Isabel Stovsky (Brian), Wick Ballard, Tom Gordon, Bill Gordon (Mandy) and great-grandfather to Brent, Arthur and John. Les was previously married to Joan Rodkey Cody and Harriet Moore Ballard (deceased). Brother of the late Barbara Wesco.After graduating high school from the Tennessee Military Institute in 1947, Les earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and then a Doctor of Medicine in 1955 from The Ohio State University. Les interned at The University Hospitals of OSU and then completed his Residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. After spending several more years at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Les spent the majority of his career as a surgeon and physician at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Les served as Chairman of the Department of Gynecology from the mid-1970s until 1990 and was known nationwide as a Master Surgeon and renowned mentor. He developed new surgical techniques and was considered the grandfather of pelvic reconstructive surgery that dramatically improved the lives of patients. His Clinic colleagues describe that Les had a major impact on compassionate patient care through his dedicated example. After retiring from medicine, Les sailed across the Atlantic and other remote parts of the globe. He was the beloved husband of the late Verta (nee Greenhill) Hester, Laura (nee Eplin), and Linda Bias; loving father of Marcella (John "Joe") Grose, Amatha "Amy" Spears, Rebecca "Beckie" Hester, Lucinda "Cindy" Owens, Rena (Tom) Beck, and Milton (Dan) Nolan; cherished grandfather of Fred III, Cindy, Megan, Nathan, Alexander "Alex", Aaron, Bethany and great-grandfather of Jackson "JJ", Emilia "Emmy", Josiah, Cole, Logan, Phoenix, Spencer, and Nolan; dear brother of the late Martin, Rosie, Myrtle, Mary, Dollie, and Benny; adored uncle of many. Leona Polster age 98, born April 29, 1925, passed away March 2, 2024. Leona was born in Cleveland to Sam and Tillie Stoltz. She was the third of five children, Victor, Mary, Ruth and Pauline and the last of her siblings to pass. Her husband, Philip Polster, died many years ago. She is survived by her two sons, Paul and Jim (Jean), four grandchildren: Julie Blantern (Nick), Eric Polster, Jason Polster (Christina) and Jonathan Polster and seven great-grandchildren, as well as beloved nieces and nephews and extended family. Leona Polster lived a long and generous life. She was born in the Woodland neighborhood of Cleveland and was proud to have come from humble beginnings. After graduating from John Hay High School, she worked to support the war effort. She married her husband Philip and later moved to the Heights where they raised their two boys. Lee was a woman ahead of her time. She and Phil owned furniture stores in Lakewood and Euclid. Losing her beloved husband early she continued to work for many years in furniture design and sales. She was fiercely independent and cared deeply for others. In retirement, she served as a volunteer chaplain at South Pointe Hospital for twenty years. She comforted those from all walks of life and religions until age 90. Lee never arrived anywhere without a care package for those she loved. She also had remarkable talents in sewing and jewelry and proudly wore many of her own creations. She will be greatly missed by all. Graveside services at Zion Memorial Park Cemetery, 5461 Northfield Rd., Bedford Heights on Wednesday March 6th at 12:00 Noon. Family will receive visitors up until 8:30 pm Wednesday at 2668 Edgehill Road Cleveland Heights.
