Roy T. Richter of Bronxville, New York passed away on October 3, 2023. Roy proudly served in the NYPD for 33 years, retiring as a Deputy Inspector. For the last 12 years of his law enforcement career, Roy was elected president of the NYPD Captains Endowment Association, representing more than 780 active and 1400 retired uniformed commanders ranked from Captain through Deputy Chief. After his retirement from the NYPD in 2020, Roy continued his career as an attorney and consultant, counseling retired NYPD members on retirement planning and specializing in labor, tax, and estate planning. Roy positively impacted the lives of countless police officers throughout his career with the NYPD. He led coalitions and successfully negotiated multi-year bargaining agreements that added a 10% boost in compensation for members. He passionately lobbied for the passage of the Zadroga bill, a 9/11 Health and Compensation Act passed in 2010. In addition to his illustrious career with the NYPD, Roy was involved in many volunteer efforts including the Manhattan Small Business Alliance, the Board of Directors of the Breezy Point Cooperative, the NYPD Disaster Relief Fund for Hurricane Sandy victims, and the New York Fraternal Order of Police, Law Enforcement Lodge 911. Roy was one of nine children born May 19, 1967, to Eileen and Roy J. Richter and raised in Brooklyn and Queens. He was a graduate of St. Francis College and Fordham University School of Law. He is also survived by his father, Roy J. Richter, sisters Kathleen Turnbull, Virginia DeLuca, Christine McDermott, Irene Richter, and brothers Paul Richter (wife JoAnne), Stephen Richter, John Richter (wife Yvonne), Peter Richter (wife Claire), and many nieces and nephews. Roy was rarely found without a smile on his face. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing tennis with his wife, exploring the world with his daughters, going on runs around Breezy Point, and lighting up every room with his sense of humor. Roy would give you the shirt off his back and consistently went above and beyond for both his family and friends. He will be profoundly missed by all. Visitation will be held Monday, October 9th, 2023 at Andrew Torregrossa & Sons Funeral Home at 2265 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn from 2 - 9 PM. Mildred Wordsman

Age - N/A

May 31, 2023

Mildred Jane Wordsman, 87, of Bronxville, NY passed on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, after battling pancreatic cancer. Mildred was born in Yonkers, NY on January 7, 1936, to Francis and Lolita Leeming Murray. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and went on to graduate from Gorton High School in 1953. She studied sociology and received a bachelor's degree from Mount St. Vincent College in 1974. Mildred married her high school sweetheart, James A. Wordsman, on July 4, 1953. They were married for 60 years until Jim passed away in 2014. She began her professional career working at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and then moved to the newly formed Federal Emergency Management Agency in the mid-1970s where she coordinated FEMAs disaster response to natural disasters in New York, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. She retired in 2000 but was called back a>er 9/11 and worked at Ground Zero for over six months helping individuals receive support from FEMA. An avid gardener, Mildred was often seen working in her garden plot at Brooklands in Bronxville. She had a unique reclined weeding technique that often frightened others who thought she may have fainted -- she was just lying in her garden weeding in the most comfortable position she could find. A passionate tag sale aficionado, she loved nothing better than getting a good deal on home furnishings, art or anything depicting a rooster, watermelon, or bumblebee. A tag sale trip wasn't successful unless you came home with some treasure. She often shamed other family members if they didn't try to bargain for a lower than asked for price and was our go to negotiator for any big-ticket items. Mildred was also a world traveler and together with Jim, they traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. Just prior to Covid, she traveled to Amsterdam on her own. She also loved camping and took her last camping trip in 2021 along with her son and youngest granddaughter, she was 85 years old at the time. As someone who maintained lifelong friendships, Mildred was able to host her oldest friends while in hospice, women she had known and remained close with for over 80 years. Mildred is survived by her son Leeming and daughter Julia; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Lori Murray; her nieces Jane Murray and Susan Murray-Sowa and their families and by her beloved grandchildren Emily, Torrance, Taylor and Riley. Mildred was predeceased by her husband James Augustine Wordsman and her son Mark Synan Wordsman, both of whom she loved dearly.
