Coralville- Rose Louise Cheney was born December 2, 1945, in Sigourney, Iowa. She was a daughter of Leonard William and Velma Louise (Campbell) Hubbell. She attended school at North English, Millersburg and graduated from Iowa Mennonite School near Kalona. On June 5, 1966, Rose was united in marriage to Larry Leroy Cheney at the North English Christian Church. They made their home in Solon for a few years before moving to Coralville in 1968. She worked as a custodian at the University of Iowa for 30 years. Rose was a former member of the North English Christian Church and the Christian Bible Fellowship Church in Coralville. She enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, sewing, quilting and spending time with her dog Angel. Rose died on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Colonial Manor in Amana, Iowa, at the age of 77 years. She is survived by two sisters Gloria Hahn of Oskaloosa and Melinda (Robert) Kochuyt of Marengo; a brother Terry Hubbell of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents; two brothers Albert and Jeffrey Hubbell; a brother-in-law Earl Hahn; and a sister-in-law Phyllis Hubbell. Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 am on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. Naomi Rose Lathrop Grunwald, 92, of Alamo, Texas and formerly Eldon, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023, at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Amana, Iowa. As were Naomi's wishes her body has been cremated and a small graveside service will be on September 11th, 2023 at 11:00 at the Eldon Cemetery, Eldon Iowa. Naomi Rose Lathrop Grunwald was born July 24th, 1931, to Charles and Caroline Hewitt Liles. She was one of sixteen children in her family. Naomi married Melvin Lathrop December 24th, 1947. Together they were parents to five sons. Melvin passed away in 1997 and later Naomi met and married Robert Grunwald. Naomi worked a variety of jobs throughout her life. She enjoyed gardening and always had beautiful flowers. She was talented at quilting and sewing and always gave her finished pieces to family and friends to enjoy. Naomi was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, her second husband Robert, ten brothers, Albert, Dwight, Frank, Pardon, Everett, Emmett, Bill, David and Gene, and four sisters, Sarah Talbott, Mary Liles, Rachel Greene and Ruth Boliou. Left to honor her memory are her five sons; Edward (Debi), Charles (Virginia), Roger (Cindy), Jerry (Sandy) and Tracy; five grandchildren: Josh (Rachel), Shane (Christiane), Benjamin (Anne), Robert (Melissa) and Angie; as well as multiple great and great-great grandchildren.Show more

"Craig Frank Brockman, 70, of Amana, Iowa, died Thursday, August 17, 2023, at his home surrounded by family after a 10-month battle with melanoma. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p. m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, for a Celebration of Life at The Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood in Cedar Rapids. Craig was born September 19, 1952, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Wendell and Jane (Bryngelson) Brockman. He graduated from Maine East Township High School in Des Plaines, Illinois. Craig was united in marriage to Bridget Mason on June 8, 1973, in Marshalltown, Iowa; they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for International Paper Company - Cedar River Mill before retiring in 2018. Craig was a man of many skills from carpentry, welding, pipe fitter, asphalt and concrete work, and mechanical skills. He owned a motorcycle when he and Bridget met and then moved on to cars, trucks, campers, boats, horses, and country living. Craig had many hobbies: hunting, fishing, horse training, riding, and loving nature and the outdoors. He spent many quality times with friends and family, hosting and organizing get-togethers in the country setting. Craig was a man of his word and was always a willing helper for anyone who asked. He was loved by many and loved his family and friends immensely. Survivors include his wife, Bridget Brockman of Amana; daughter, Julie; son, Benjamin; grandchildren, McKenna Brockman, Corbin Brockman, and River Heneke; great-grandson, Kaisen Tigges; sisters, Christine (Joe) Cheek of Hartwell, Georgia, and Deb Danko of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brother, Curtis (Deb) Brockman of Wellsburg, Iowa; his outdoor companions, Maggie (dog) and Peppi (horse); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family. Walford- Betty Nell Smith was born November 23, 1933 in Harper, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Adella (Fry) Reinert. She graduated from Webster High School in 1952. On August 8, 1954 Betty was united in marriage to Richard E. Smith at the North English Christian Church, North English. They lived in Webster and in 1997 moved to Walford. Betty worked for Evans Photography, later owned and operated J&C Café in Keswick for 10 years, helped her husband with Smith Foil Prints for 10 years and was also a homemaker. Betty was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church and later attended Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford. Betty was a member of The True Blue Club in Webster and the Clover Ridge Women’s Group. Betty enjoyed sewing, fishing, gardening, canning and watching her great grandchildren grow up. Betty passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Colonial Manor of Amana at the age of 89 years. Betty is survived by her daughters, Debra (Gary) Hall of Walford and Kimberly (Richard) Ebsen of Middle Amana; one granddaughter, Jennifer Ebsen; two great-granddaughters, Arianna and Kailee Ebsen; and a step-grandson, Jason Hall. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard, and one brother, Robert Reinert. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 am until service time at the church. Burial will be at the Sorden Cemetery near Webster at a later date. Wayne Keith Johnson, 80 of Blairstown died on Monday, June 19, 2023 at Colonial Manor, Amana. Funeral Service: 10:30 a. m. , Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Blairstown by Pastor Jeff Schanbacher. Friends may visit with the family on Monday at the church from 4 to 7 p. m. and on Tuesday after 9:30 a. m. Burial will be held at a later date at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. Van Steenhuyse Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family. Wayne is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol; son Bryan (Annette) Johnson of Blairstown; two daughters Lori (Marlon) Blaha of Solon and Niki (Nate) Frese of Norway; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his brother Don Johnson of Blairstown; nephews Tim (Carrie) Johnson, Chad (Jessica) Johnson and their families. Wayne was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Johnson; parents Kenneth and Florence Johnson; grandparents Elias and Gertrude Risdal Johnson and Henry and Martha Rieck Schultz. Wayne was born on August 3, 1942 in Cedar Rapids the son of Kenneth and Florence Schultz Johnson. He graduated from Blairstown High School in 1960. Wayne married Carol Scheetz on September 1, 1963 at Grace Lutheran Church, Blairstown. Wayne was a proud veteran serving in the United States Army from 1960 to 1968 during the Vietnam War Era. He started his career at Nissen Trampoline, after a few short years he moved to Collins Radio where he worked in the procurement quality assurance department and later retired after 40+ years. During that time at Collins he spent many years traveling worldwide and enjoyed the dining out experiences of the cultures he visited. Wayne was a pitcher for many fast pitch softball leagues in the eastern Iowa area for over 30 years. He played on teams such as Blairstown, Superior Motors, CR Merchants, Mr. Perfect, Vigortone, Collins Radio and many more. His love of the game returned when he was 50 years old and started to pitch again. Wayne never missed an opportunity to talk about softball and was always sharing tips with young pitchers. Wayne was very proud of all of his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their many activities throughout the years. Wayne and his son Bryan, had a love of classic cars, motorcycles, vintage open wheel race cars and spent time enjoying these hobbies together. Over the years, Wayne's favorites included his 1957 Chevy, 1987 Buick Grand National and a1970 Trostle Midget race car. He enjoyed drag racing his 1957 Chevy at Cordova and other tracks across Iowa in his early years as well the Trostle midget at many dirt tracks across the Midwest in the later years. Wayne was a true "gearhead" and because of that we welcome and encourage everyone to drive your Classic Car, Street Rod or Motorcycle to the visitation and/or funeral. Helen J. Johnson, age 100, formerly of rural Oxford died Monday, April 10, 2023, at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Amana. Graveside services will be held at 3pm Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Oxford Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 1 to 3 pm Monday at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Helen Jane Sherlock was born January 2, 1923, in Iowa County, Iowa the daughter of Robert and Libbie (Nesmith) Sherlock. She was united in marriage to Donald E. Johnson, February 20, 1947, in Iowa City. The couple farmed near Oxford for many years and for about ten years, Helen worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a longtime active member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, was still keeping her home in good order up to the age of 94, was known as the pie maker queen, a good friend to many and the worlds Best Grandma to the lucky grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family includes her son and his wife, David and Nora Johnson; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Johnson (Chris Green), Jennifer Christie (Dennis), Ben Johnson (Heather), Jeff Van Hemert (Laura) and Bindy Sornsin (Sean); 10 great-grandchildren, Libby and Owen Green, Olivia and Evelyn Christie, Cecil, Jonathan and Lucie McClung, Brynlee, Zachary and Pierce Van Hemert, and Sophia Sornsin; son-in-law, Brian Comito. Wayne Orville Riley passed away at the Colonial Manor in Amana on February 9, 2023. He was married for 69 years to Loralyn Wilson from South Dakota. Wayne was born May 24, 1929, to his parents, Wallace and Pauline Riley. His family also welcomed his younger sister, Glenice. Wayne graduated from Norway High School in 1947. He served in the Air Force; he was trained to be a NORAD radar operator. He was stationed at Ellsworth Base in Rapid City and briefly in Thule, Greenland. While in Rapid City, Wayne met his future wife, Loralyn Wilson, while attending a church social dance. The couple married on February 18, 1953, in Rapid City. Later the couple moved to Norway, Iowa to farm. The couple had four kids: Roger, Warren, Raelene, and Malinda. When Loralyn got to Iowa her father-in-law bought some cattle in South Dakota, and they were shipped by rail to Norway. Along with the cattle from South Dakota came Loralyn's horse named Flame. Wayne farmed with his dad on the land where he grew up, and on a nearby farm where his dad grew up. He loved working hard, but always had time for a cold Pepsi and a candy bar. After he retired, he enjoyed driving old tractors on various tractor rides around eastern Iowa. His favorite tractor was always his 1957 John Deere 60 he had when he first started farming. He traded that tractor off for a newer model. Later he located that same John Deere 60 at a sale near Belle Plaine. He purchased the tractor, and restored it. He rode on rides with that tractor, and later his Massey 65. Wayne also had a John Deere 520 he bought from Loralyn's brother Bob in South Dakota. After he got that tractor running, he used it to pull a restored one row corn picker. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Loralyn, in November of 2021; and brother-in-law, Weldon C. Towe. He is survived by his children, Roger (Susie) Riley of Ames, Warren (Shelly) Riley of Tama, Raelene (Mark) Wilson of Lawton, and Malinda Riley of Norway; one sister, Glenice Towe. He will be missed by eight grandchildren, Sarah Watson, David Wilson, Daniel Wilson, Rick Riley, Ryan Riley, Robyn Martinez, Dionne Riley, Abbey Riley; and 5 great-grandchildren. Wayne will be missed by nephews, Stuart Towe and Quintin Towe, who farm his land; niece, Amy Becker, other nieces and nephews, along with his many friends. Funeral Service is 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, February, 15, 2023 at Norway United Methodist Church, Norway, IA, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Linwood Cemetery, Amana, IA with military honors.
