James Elliott

James Elliott

Age - 96

November 29, 2023

"James Melvin (Jim) Elliott passed away Friday morning, November 24, 2023, at his home of 61 years near Excelsior, MO, a mile from the home place where he was born on November 10, 1927, to Alvin Louis Elliott and Melva Laura (Moser) Elliott. Jim was educated in country schools until his freshman year when he attended California High School while his parents tended an incapacitated uncle's farm. He completed the remaining years of his secondary education at Versailles High School, where he graduated in 1945. The following year, he joined the United States Navy and traveled to San Diego, CA, for boot camp. With World War II hostilities still underway, his time as a new Midwestern recruit in a big west coast city brought both conflicting emotions and new experiences. Jim would say that meeting Ruth Minetta Parks--a San Diego native co-ed--was the best thing to come of his naval experience. He courted her during his deployment to China, where he mercifully saw no action, participating instead in decommissioning military installations. Upon his return to the States in 1948, James and Minetta became engaged and married that June. The couple returned to the Versailles area where they planned to farm land near his home place. First, he enrolled at the University of Missouri to study agriculture. Jim and Minetta spent his 1948-1950 school years living in a small trailer in Columbia where the first of six children was born. Following a semester living and working on the university's experimental farm at Weldon Springs, MO, the young family moved back to begin farm life in the Versailles area. Post-war 1951, the Elliott family dove into the process of building a home and a farm enterprise, carrying on his father's farming tradition, as their young family doubled. Minetta's parents visited from CA and helped build the family's original house. Jim joined the Missouri Seed Improvement Association to begin putting the innovative farming techniques he learned at MU and from the association into practice. He also began an enduring relationship with the Missouri Extension Service. As the family and the farm became established, Jim started a seed business; El-Par Seeds, Inc. , continues to this day under leadership of Jim's first two sons, Richard and Roger, in whom he inspired a passion for farming and stewardship of the land. Even though tending livestock was a lot of work, Jim enjoyed a special relationship with his cattle. Perpetually mindful of their needs, he talked to them individually and treated them as friends to the point that they recognized and responded to his voice. Even though selling them off was inevitable, he was probably secretly sad to see each one go. Jim valued his family, his customers, the seeds he propagated and sold, the land he was privileged to steward, and the community where he spent the remainder of his life. An active member of Bethel Church, he served as church chairman, deacon, youth sponsor, Sunday school teacher and other leadership roles. For many years, Jim taped Bethel services and created cassette copies, wrapping each in a printed copy of the program, for distribution to the congregation. In addition, he was an active participant in Bethel Brotherhood and Providence community center activities. Jim served the larger Versailles community as a Morgan County R-II School Board member for several years. Jim is survived by his six children: Nancy (Michael) Forrest, Chris (Carol Brownlee) Elliott, Roger (Lisa) Elliott, Richard (Doris) Elliott, Jim (Patty) Elliott, and Tony (Kari) Elliott; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Beth Dennis. Preceding Jim in death are his brothers John Richard, Arthur Dean, and Athel Gene Elliott; parents Alvin and Melva Elliott; daughter Lorie June Elliott; brother-in-law Tike Dennis; and wife Ruth Minetta Elliott. A private internment service took place at the Bethel Fellowship Church Cemetery. A Visitation is planned from 5:00-7:30 p. m. , Friday, December 15th, at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, 207 N Monroe St, Versailles, MO. A Celebration of Jim's life is planned for 10:30 a. m. , Saturday, December 16th, at Bethel Fellowship Church, 37830 Bethel Church Rd, Fortuna, MO. In lieu of plants or flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Jim to the Compassus (Hospice) Living Foundation, https://compassuslivingfoundation. org/give/. Mail donations to: Compassus Living Foundation, 503 N. Euclid Avenue, Suite 9E, Bay City, MI 48706. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles. Robert Mathews Jr

Robert Mathews Jr

Age - 83

November 22, 2023

"ROBERT JOSEPH MATHEWS, JR. Mathews, (with one "t" because we couldn't afford two) Robert Joseph, Jr AKA Trebor Swehtam July 22, 1940 - November 14, 2023 Bob was the Original Girl Dad and Parole Officer to Kim Mathews and Laura Piercy (Tony), Chocolate Chip Cookie Connoisseur, Master of the Dad Joke and Life-Long Dance Partner-in-Crime of 57 years to wife Bonnie (nee Koppitz). Proud Poppy to Courtney Middle, Ryan Middle, Coby Williams and Ryder Williams. Loving son of Robert J. Mathews, Sr and Louise Rosamond Mathews (nee Peterson) and brother to Susan Rickey (nee Mathews) (Ken), who all preceded him in death. Dear Uncle and Friend. Courageous Army Veteran. Not only the Master of the Dad Joke, Bob left his mark and was always eager to share his expertise in a variety of areas including knowing when to leave an event to "beat the traffic," the fine art of lawn mower placement to create perfect yard lines, pro tips for proper windshield bug-removal, extreme couponing, how to say names backwards, and the not-so-popular: how to wake the family with ice cube making at 5am. He passed these skills down to his daughters who use them to this day (except for the ice cube one - that one never really caught on with auto ice cube makers and all. ) Bob grew up in South St. Louis and made lifelong childhood friends he was still in contact with (well, BA - Before Alzheimers. That damn disease!) He was a standout baseball player in his youth and a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan. Despite his aversion to algebra, he graduated from Southwest High School and Southeast Missouri State and went on to work as a Systems Analyst for many years having fun with flowcharts and making lists. (Oh, add this as another super skill he passed down. ) He was the epitome of what Midwesterners call "Good People. " Hardworking and willing to do anything for anyone, there wasn't anyone Bob didn't get along with. (Except for maybe that bagger from Dierbergs who squashed his bread. Once. After that incident, the pre-bag warning of "you squasha my bread, I squasha your head" was borne. ) During the Girl Dad teenage years, Bob could usually be found on a track or cross country course or basketball court with camera in hand snapping pictures and capturing memories of friendships that would also last a lifetime. That's what Bob did. He brought people together and made them feel wanted, included and loved. Thanks, Daddio! Bob married his college sweetheart, Bonnie, on August 13, 1966. After Bonnie burnt the jello (which may or may not have been done on purpose), Bob took over the family cooking duties and the rest was culinary history: he concocted the best pizza, beef burgundy, black bottom rum mousse pie, Rice Krispy "bricks". . . . the Yum list is endless. Luckily, he passed this gene to daughter, Laura, so the family can still enjoy an edible meal when they get together. Bob and Bonnie cut a mean rug on the dance floor, created a loving family, built a business together (aptly named "B\u0026amp;B Telecom") and weathered all the good and challenging times life threw at them to make it 57 years! What a feat! You Done Good, Dad! WE LOVE YOU!!!!! In lieu of flowers, the family will be taking donations that will be given to Arrowhead Senior Living Facility - Memory Care Unit in Bob's name. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p. m. , Thursday, November 16, 2023 at Kidwell Garber Funeral Home of Versailles, Missouri. A service will be held at 11:00 a. m. , Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Valhalla Funeral Chapel, 7600 St. Charles Rock Road, St. Louis, Missouri. Visitation there will be from 10:00-11:00 a. m. in the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Valhalla Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www. kidwellgarber. com. Ila Schouten

Ila Schouten

Age - 90

November 21, 2023

"ILA LUCILLE SCHOUTEN Ila Lucille Wood Schouten went to her external home on November 17, 2023. She was born on September 22, 1933, in Camdenton, Missouri, to Roy and Gladys Wood, where Lucille spent many wonderful years, along with her brother, Donald Wood. Lucille was baptized at an early age in the Baptist faith where she devotedly attended services throughout the years playing the piano, singing, working in Awanas with the children or wherever she was needed to serve the Lord. Her love for the Lord could only be matched by her childhood sweetheart, Floyd "Bud" Schouten, who she married on June 1, 1951, in Versailles, Missouri, at the old Christian Church. Lucille and Bud were blessed with two children, Vicky and Bob. She loved her family deeply and ran a tight ship at home while Bud proudly served his country. It's fitting that Lucille's kind and nurturing heart led her into a career for 23 years at the Kidwell and Good Shephard Nursing Homes where she humbly provided the highest quality of care for the elderly. Lucille firmly believed in serving her community, and since she was never known for sitting still, upon retirement, she spent countless hours volunteering at the Nutrition Center and The Morgan Food Bank. She was also a member of the Senior Citizen Club and proudly served on the board of the Nutrition Site. When she wasn't serving others or her community, Lucille loved listening to gospel and country music. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and partaking in her many hobbies. You would often find her quilting, embroidering, playing games and crafting. She was also a collector of beautiful glass and angel statues. And Lucille had the most impressive green thumb. She would spend several hours a week gardening resulting in the most impeccable yard admired by all her neighbors. Lucille is survived by her daughter, Vicky Abolahrari; her son, Bob (Michelle) Schouten; grandchildren, Siroos (Jadea) Abolahrari, Becca (Jed) Jeffries, Taylor (Loren) Lang and Hannah Schouten, who were all a blessing from God; great- granddaughters, Raeya and Amelia Abolahrari and Bailey, Jayla and Aryn Jeffries; geat-grandsons, Kai and Isaiah Lang along with several nieces and nephews.
