Rosa Martins Pires Rego Cortez, 95, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ. She was born in Adrao, Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal and emigrated to the US in 1960, resided in New London, CT until settling in Union, NJ in 1993. Rosa and her husband the late Manuel, were the proud owners of the very successful Randy's Bakery in New London, Connecticut. Rosa was a great business woman and in many ways was modern and ahead of her times. She was not only courageous, but she was loving, helpful and cared for others. Rosa was as a member of St. Michael's Church in Union, NJ. Wife of the late Manuel Fernandes Cortez; devoted and loving mother of Dr. Rosa Cortes; cherished grandmother of Sara Rosa Cortes Schwartz; mother-in-law of Michael E. Schwartz; also survived by many dear relatives and friends. The wake for Rosa will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023 from 6 - 8 pm at the Buyus Funeral Home 426 Lafayette St. , at Wilson Ave. , Newark, NJ. Interment Cemetery of Adrao, Soajo, Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal.

Martha "Mott" Salters, a beacon of love and warmth, transitioned peacefully from this life on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at the age of 86. Born on June 10, 1937, in Washington, GA, to the late Frank Turner Sr. and Mamie Turner (Cox), Martha's legacy is one of unwavering love, devotion, and kindness. Martha was a devoted member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Washington, GA, where her faith was nurtured and strengthened. Her early years in Georgia were marked by a deep connection to family, being the eldest of seven siblings. After relocating to Newark, NJ, Martha attended and graduated from Girls Vocational High School, laying the foundation for a life filled with love and accomplishment. Martha was united in matrimony with her departed husband, Willie "Duke" Salters, creating a partnership built on love and mutual respect. She cherished her role as a loving wife, and together they created a home filled with laughter, love, and beloved memories. Martha and Willie enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, spending precious moments together, and exploring the world through their travels. Professionally, Martha dedicated many years to an exclusive clothing boutique, where her passion for fashion and style shone brightly. Her commitment to excellence extended beyond the workplace, as she poured her heart into creating delicious meals and desserts for family and friends. Martha's culinary talents were legendary, and her kitchen was a place of joy and fellowship. A voracious reader, Martha found solace and joy in the pages of countless books. Her love for literature enriched her life, providing a source of inspiration and knowledge that she eagerly shared with those around her. Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Turner Sr. and Mamie Turner (Cox), husband Willie "Duke" Salters, as well as her brothers Willie "Bo" Turner, Frank "Cook" Turner, Ivan "Poochie" Campbell, and Irvin "Gunnkie" Campbell. She leaves behind cherished memories for her surviving family members, including her brother Rufus Turner, sister Patricia Gonzalez, nieces Natasha "Baby" Callaway, and Melissa Gholston, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation Agape Hospice Care, Pastor James Kenton, and Better Outcomes Home Care, and cousin Ree. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Martha's life at Watkins Funeral Home in Douglasville, GA, on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by the funeral service from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Subsequently, Martha will be transported to Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, NJ, for a final farewell on Thursday, December 14, 2023. Visitation will commence at 10:00 am, with the funeral service following at 11:00 am. Finally, Martha will be laid to rest alongside her devoted husband in Kenilworth, NJ.
