Roger Lee Harpe, Jr. , 87, of Asheville, NC, entered his eternal home on Friday, October 6, 2023. Roger was born May 16, 1936, in Eagle Mills Township of Iredell County, NC, to the late Roger Lee Harpe, Sr. , and Mary Elizabeth Dare. He was the oldest of three children and is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Cothren, and brother, Henry Harpe. Roger was married to the late Geraldine Ellen Brown for 47 years and three children were born from this union: daughter, Lee Harpe Davis (Edwin), and sons, Keith Cordell Harpe (Patty), and Steve Randall Harpe (Tamera). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Graig Davis (Vanesa), Marissa Gunn (Allen), Matthew Davis (Kirby), Ashley Fortner (Tyler), Alex Harpe and Brandon Harpe, who lovingly knew him as "Papa," often shortened to "Pop. " His grandchildren blessed his legacy with seven great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. Roger is also survived by his wife of 17 years, Jerlene Harpe. They loved jigsaw puzzles and traveling together. They even visited all 50 states! Roger was fond of her children, Vickie Soesbee (Johnny) and Timothy Bailey (Maria), and granddaughter, Danielle Bailey. Roger was an executive with Boy Scouts of America for Stokes, Surry and Buncombe Counties. He was an Eagle Scout with bronze, gold and silver palms and was also a recipient of the Order of the Arrow. He was owner of The Carpet Barn and Mr. Handyman in Asheville. He was also a long-time member of Emma Fellowship Church. Roger's legacy is marked by love, compassion and his generosity that remains an inspiration to his family and friends. His memory will forever live on in their hearts. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Emma Fellowship Church, 55 Adams Hill Road, Asheville. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p. m. followed by the memorial service at 2:00 p. m. Entombment will then take place at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Asheville - Betty Meadows, 98, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the Swannanoa Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Asheville. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a graduate of Mars Hill College. Mrs. Meadows retired from the N. C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Center and was a longtime member of Emma United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and making great memories together. She will be greatly missed. Mrs. Meadows was a daughter of the late Henry Shuford and Mary Patton Shuford, and the wife of the late John Troy Meadows. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Kate Seaward and Laura Shuford; and by her twin brother, Lewis Shuford. Surviving are her son, John L. Meadows; and daughter, Mary Emmagene Mangum and husband Reid. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Pastor Mary Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery in Swannanoa. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Clara Elizabeth Ownbey Harris, 96, of Asheville, NC, went to be with her Lord on December 4, 2023. She was born on May 12, 1927 in Asheville to Oliver and Mary Ownbey. Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Porter "Shorty" Harris, her parents, brothers, Herbert (sister-in-law, Charlene) of Asheville and David Ownbey of Biloxi, MS, and her sister-in-law, Johnnie Ownbey of Spartanburg, SC. Clara was a graduate of Grace High School and Cecil's Business College. She worked for Carolina Power & Light Company prior to her marriage to "Shorty" on February 19, 1949. Clara was an active member of Abernethy United Methodist Church for over 70 years, serving her Lord as a Sunday school teacher, leader of the United Methodist Women, supporting Abernethy's B. E. A. R. Closet and actively working with the Prayer Quilt Ministry. She also served on the Board of Trustees at Brooks-Howell Home. Her contributions to God's Kingdom on earth are too numerous to list. Clara is survived by brothers Frank Ownbey of Spartanburg, SC, and Joe Ownbey (Judy) of Pisgah Forest, NC; by her sister-in-law, Cathie Ownbey, of Biloxi, MS; by her children, Stephen Harris (Myrna) of Asheville, and Portia Gajewski (Robert) of Mill Spring, NC. She also leaves six grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Corrine Harris Wessman (Brian) of St. Louis, MO; Ryan Eli Harris of Portland, OR; Matthew Stephen Harris of St. Louis; Megan Alicia Gajewski Barnhill (Richard) of Arlington, VA; Philip Andrew Gajewski (Emily) of Charleston, SC; and Katie Marie Gajewski Sweeney (Dan) of Charleston, SC. Clara is also survived by six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, (Time TBD) at Abernethy United Methodist Church, 1418 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC, with Reverend Dianne Johnston officiating. Alexander - Nola Eleanor Gentry Rash, 89, of 1085 Jenkins Valley Road, passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the Aston Park Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County and retired in 2010 following 20 years of service with Square D. She was a daughter of the late Herman Gideon Gentry and Eva Mae Tipton Gentry, and wife of the late Juby Drestle Rash who died in 2002. Mrs. Rash was also preceded in death by her brother, Ronnie Gentry, sisters, Kathryn Grooms and Margaret Rigsby and step-son, Gilmer Rash. She loved her family and enjoyed working in her flower garden. Surviving are her children: Joan R. Skinner and husband Tommy of Myrtle Beach, SC, Eddie Dean Rash of Alexander, Brenda R. Fisher and husband Nate of Leicester; step son, Leroy Rash of Mars Hill; grandchildren: Bryan Ward (Lauren), Hanna Rash, Jacob Rash (Jillian), Michele Dawson (Ryan) and Melissa King; step grandchildren, Jason Rash and Karen Barnarski; great-grandson: Lyle Jennings Ward; step great grandchildren, Amanda Willis (Matthew), Brandon Barnarski, Alex Rash and Trent Rash and a step great-great-granddaughter, Bella Willis; sisters, Betty Sawyer of Asheville, Judy Gentry of Swannanoa, Pat Rice of Asheville and Jean Ledford (Jim) of Swannanoa and a number of nieces, nephews and host of friends. Sally Marie Cutshaw (ne: Smith), 81, of Asheville, NC, passed away on November 22, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzeimer's disease. Sally was born on August 15, 1942 to Donald and Margie Smith in Mobile Al. After graduating from Murphy High School in Mobile, Al she went on to attain a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation from Florida State University. While in college, she met Charles Q Cutshaw. The soon wed and had three children, Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr, Michael J. Cutshaw (1970-1987) and Andrea L. Cutshaw. When Sally had Chuck, she decided to dedicate her life to being a wonderful and caring mother. Sally threw herself into raising her children and was constantly involved in their activities. She was a cub scout leader, attended many sporting events, worked tirelessly and supported them through the many passions and difficulties of their adult lives. Whether that was supporting her husband, Charles, when he had to leave the Army using her lifelong passion of giving, or supporting Andrea as a single mother by baby-sitting, she made it her mission to improve the lives of her family and others. Sally was a passionate gardener when she wasn't filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in her garden, weeding, repotting, and pruning. We will miss her greatly. Sally was predeceased by her brother Donald L. Smith, Jr, her sister, Margie Cagle and her son, Michael J. Cutshaw. She is survived by Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr and Andrea L. Cutshaw and her grandchildren Kayleigh I. Cutshaw, Brianna M. Kitzhoffer, and Isaiah M. Darity. The family will receive friends on December 5, 2023 from 10 to 11AM at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Asheville - Robert G. "Cat" Benson, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Charles George VA Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Horace Benson, Sr. and Nellie Emma Warren Benson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jane Waldroup Benson; son, Robert "Pee Wee" Benson; great-grandson, Alexandar Benson; sisters: Arney Fields, and Betty Moore; and brothers: Horace Benson, Jr. and J. B. Benson. Mr. Benson retired in 1991 following 30 years of service with the U. S. Army as a Combat Engineer, having served in Korea and Vietnam, and formerly employed with Fisher Flooring. He was a longtime member of the VFW Post #891, and Morning Side Baptist Church. Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Ronn Benson and wife Sarah of Asheville; grandchildren: Ron Benson, II and wife Stephanie of Newport News, VA, Bryan Benson and wife Elise of Stuttgart, Germany, and Penny Sue Benson of Asheville; great-grandchildren: Olivia, Warren, Jacob, and Madelyn; brother, Jack Benson and wife Nora of Asheville; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM on Friday, December 8, 2023, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Nathan Cravette and Tim Warren officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:30 AM till 12:15 PM at the funeral home.
