Tribute Rogene Butts' life began on May 10, 1919; the daughter of Charley W. and Crete (Zachary) Maclean. Rogene was a life-long resident of Leon. She attended the Susan B. Allen Nurses' Training Program. Rogene was united in marriage to Melvin L. Butts on October 27, 1940. She loved nursing and worked for several years on the maternity floor ushering babies into the world for countless families. Rogene lived in Leon, KS all of her life, she called her most recent residence "home" since 1940. She was deeply involved in the Leon Christian Church, teaching Sunday School for a number of years and was proud to be a life-long member. Rogene gave countless hours of service to the Leon Senior Center where she assisted with blood drives, served on the Election Board and even taught an exercise class. Rogene could always be found at the Leon Senior Center volunteering her time, enjoying lunches with friends or playing bridge. She never knew a stranger and made many fast friends. Rogene held the title of Grand Marshall in the Leon Home Harvest Parade three separate times. She was proud to tell you how old she was and exactly how old as well. Rogene loved life, loved her community, loved her faith and her family. Her loving family includes her children Donald W. (Jean) Butts of Williamsburg, VA, Lionell Butts of Leon, Lucretia (Jerry) Hawks of Wellington, KS; grandchildren Cole (Stacy) Hawks, Steve (Traci) Hawks, Megan (Marc) Nicolas, Tracy Holland, and David (Amanda) Butts; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family and friends that will miss Rogene dearly. Rogene passed away peacefully at her home in Leon. She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; brother, Charles Maclean; infant sister, Ruth Margaret; and her parents. Read More
