Martha Shaffer

Martha Bell (Morris) Shaffer passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 7th, 2023. Marty, later to be named "JuJu" by her great-grandchildren was born in Kansas City, MO, June 12th, 1926. She was the sixth child born to her parents Frederick and Lula Morris. She was the last living member of her immediate family. She was married to Herbert Donald Shaffer and they had one son, Thomas Donald Shaffer (deceased) November 10th, 2021. Growing up during the depression she shared many stories of challenging times. Coal to heat the stove, pancakes most nights for dinner, the first TV the children bought for their parents, walking and riding street cars to work and school, losing their home, handmade dresses by Lula and bouncing around rental homes. Despite the obstacles of her youth, Marty craved knowledge and education as she knew that was the only way to rise up. She attended Henry C. Kumpf Grade School at 44th and Wabash. She then attended Paseo High School and graduated in 1943. Later in life she continued her education journey at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. At UMKC she furthered her studies in education and the Spanish language. She went on to teach Spanish in the Shawnee Mission School District with a majority of time at Indian Hills Junior High. She retired in 1986 but continued teaching Spanish for years. Her passion for romance languages became all consuming. She was active with the La Causerie Françoise and El Club Interamericano. She was fortunate enough to travel to Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Finland many times chaperoning students learning the language and culture. She also enjoyed the game of golf and was a part of leagues at Leawood South, Ironhorse and Swope Memorial golf clubs. Her retirement years were relaxing, and she also stayed busy volunteering at Ozanam Home for Boys where she was awarded volunteer of the year. We will miss her dearly. She is survived by her grandsons Paul (Dawna Rutledge) and Jonathan (Kristen) Shaffer as well as great-grandchildren Reid and Marcella Shaffer. A celebration of life will be arranged in early 2024.Show more

Randy Brizendine

We are sad to announce the passing of Randy W. Brizendine, of Oak Grove, MO on December 6, 2023. Randy passed away very peacefully surrounded by his two loving children, family, and friends following a lengthy battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. At the time of Randy’s passing, he was the sales manager of C & C Mechanical. Randy was a football player at and graduate of Benton High School. Throughout Randy’s life he was a basketball referee, and softball umpire. As we know, Randy had been fighting for his life and waiting for a lung transplant which he had not yet received. He felt in his heart that it would be meaningful to donate his own organs through the Midwest Transplant Network, which he was able to gift after his passing. Randy is survived by his daughter: Lauren Thompson; Son-in-law: Travis Thompson: two grandsons: Paxton & Corbin Thompson; Son: Isaac Brizendine; Brother: David Brizendine; and Sisters: Pamela Lee, Julie Needham; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. Randy was preceded in death by his brother: Michael Brizendine; as well as his father: Hugh Brizendine. Private Invite Only Services will be held on Tuesday December 12th 2023 at Terrace Park Funeral home and cemetery, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City MO 64155. Private Invite Only Visitation will be from 11-12PM, and Private funeral service 12-1PM at the Lakeside Chapel and Randy’s Private Invite Only Celebration of Life from 1-3PM at the main chapel of Terrace Park, with food and beverages served. Reflecting on the life of our beloved mother, Brenda Joyce Simmons (maiden name: McCloud), we find ourselves embracing a mix of grief and joy. Momma had a unique way of finding laughter amidst her struggles while shedding tears of happiness when witnessing the achievements and accomplishments of those who were near and dear to her. It is through this lens that we share thoughts of our Mother, Brenda Simmons – a woman whose journey was marked by strength, sacrifice, lots of laughter, joy, and boundless love. Momma’s transition to eternal glory fills us with great sadness, but there is an unexplainable joy when reflecting on all the love and laughter she brought to our lives. We take comfort in knowing that she now resides in the eternal presence of God, liberated from the pain she endured throughout her life. Her departure represents a permanent breakthrough and victory that no one can encroach upon; forever. Momma made her share of mistakes, but she rose above them all by the way that she chose to live thereafter. We honor such an amazing, remarkable, precious, and beautiful gift! Momma’s immense strength, unwavering sacrifice, and her heart devoted to showering love upon others left an indelible impact on our souls. Her journey was far from easy, but her resilience illuminated her path and left an everlasting impression on all those fortunate enough to have known her. Known as "Bingo Brenda" at her favorite bingo locations, South KC Blue Ridge and Shriners, Momma was not just someone who went and played bingo, but someone who went and connected with people on a personal level. Wherever Momma would go, somebody had a friend. Momma had a great love for books and extensive reading. Her collection of novels read over the years had to be in the thousands. She loved all of the V C Andrew's books starting with Flowers In The Attic. Momma had a genuine interest in others’ lives and always made herself available, ensuring that she was never a stranger. Her laughter and love knew no bounds, radiating warmth and joy to countless individuals. It was her beautiful and joyful spirit that radiated the most. Momma possessed an extraordinary memory that astounded us all. Birthdays, phone numbers, addresses – she remembered it all! Much greater than Siri or Google, she was always readily available with information and assistance whenever we needed it. "Hey Momma!" Beyond her remarkable memory was her unwavering love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With every phone call and visit, she would express her love through big hugs, giving them candy, and always inquiring about their well-being or what they were up to. We fondly recall moments when Momma’s humor brought laughter into our lives, even in the most unlikely situations. Her witty remarks would brighten the spirits of nurses, doctors, and everyone fortunate enough to be in her presence. Momma cherished her time reading the Call paper, Sunday comics, crossword puzzles, and coloring books while sharing these simple pleasures with her loved ones. Momma’s unconditional love for her family, her unfathomable sense of joy, and the fact that she was a giver, was the cornerstone of who she was. In times of need, she would always answer the call – literally! Regardless of the hour, Momma would answer our phone calls to offer her support, guidance, or, in most cases, to simply be a joyful place of conversation. While the void left is immeasurable, we find solace in the knowledge that Momma now resides in a place of everlasting peace, free from pain, surrounded by the boundless love of God. He graduated from Holden High School in 1993 and attended Vatterott College receiving his HVAC Degree. He was united in marriage to Stephanie Darnell on December 24, 1998. They later divorced but remained friends. He owned and operated 7 Arrows Heating & Cooling and was a proud member of the Better Business Bureau. In addition to spending time with family and friends, James was a family man and enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren, traveling, fishing, listening to Garth Brooks and was an avid KU fan. James is survived by his fiancée, Alicia Turner; his mother, Beverly A. Hines of Concordia, MO; five children, Kailee (Jacob) Husemann of Lexington, MO, Lacey (Mark) Hilden of Alma, MO, Abigail Hines of Kansas City, MO, Alexis Supitilov (Caleb Slater) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Bryce Supitilov of Odessa, MO; eleven grandchildren, Isabelle Whitley, Rene Hilden, Isaiah Husemann, Ronin Hilden, Kynsley Hines, Karsyn Husemann, Ryker Hines, Emmalee Husemann, Morgan Hilden, and Waylon Hines; three sisters, Jennifer Swan of Jefferson City, MO, Melissa Apel of Moberly, MO, Loryn (Jormel) Burks of St. Louis, MO; one brother, Scott (Jeanette) Rice Ashland, MO; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Dan Ascheman, a member of the Kansas City community, died on December 4, 2023, at the age of 49. Born on June 26, 1974, Dan was best known for his sense of humor and fantastic laugh. With a love for fierce debate and adventure, Dan could engage and befriend anyone who crossed his path. Dan's life was filled with amazing friends, music, and a robust career. He loved playing and coaching football. Dan worked hard, with the help of his loving parents, to battle his medical and mental health challenges and focus on his faith. Dan will be fondly remembered by those who knew him as a friend and family member. We will miss his witty jokes and intellectual conversations. Joseph Ferrantelle

Age - 94

Joseph Anthony Ferrantelle passed away peacefully at his home on December 7, 2023. He was 94 years old. Joseph was born and raised in the North End of Kansas City and attended Karnes school and Manual High school. His nickname in those early years was "88 keys" as he became an advanced pianist frequently playing on multiple Kansas City radio stations during his preteen and teen years. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany as a select electrical communications specialist and instructor. He attended one year of college at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla (Missouri S & T) and then became a proud union electrician for nearly 50 years at IBEW Local #124. He served in a supervisory capacity on a number of large Kansas City projects such as KCI, Crown Center, Commerce Tower, and countless others. But his crowning achievement was to court, sway and convince the beautiful Ms. to be his bride in 1950. They spent 67 years together until her passing in 2017. He was our wonderful father, brother, uncle, papa, and great-papa and his straight-shooting advice regarding life's lessons will be cherished and remembered forever. Along with his wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Grace Ferrantelle; his older brother Frank; and his sister Florine Arnone. He is survived by his son Frank Ferrantelle (Debra); his daughter Grace Webb (David); five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Wednesday, December 13, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a. m. with the Funeral Mass at 1:30 p. m.
