Robert Umberto Wiencko, age 77, of Stratford, the beloved husband of 50 years to Virginia Susan Vangele Wiencko, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, October 6, 2023 in St. Vincent Medical Center in Bridgeport. Born In Bridgeport on July 14, 1946 to the late Anthony and Edvige (Bettini) Wiencko, Bob has been a lifetime Stratford resident. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired Working Leader of the underground utilities crews for United Illuminating. Survivors in addition to his beloved wife Sue, include his devoted son, Thomas of Stratford, a brother Anthony Wiencko and his wife Carol of Shelton, a brother-in-law Victor Vangele and his wife Barbara of Trumbull, 2 nephews, Anthony Wiencko and his wife Tara and Jeffrey Vangele, a niece Jennifer and her husband David LaPierre. Friends may greet his family on Tuesday, October 10th from 4-7 pm in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, CT. A funeral service will take place at 10 am Wednesday, October 11th in the funeral home. Interment with Full Military Honors will take place in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. With great sadness, our family announces the passing of Ethel G Mellor, age 89 of Stratford, the beloved wife of John Mellor. She passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023, in her home with her family by her side. Born at home in Stratford on January 15, 1934, to the late Edward and Martha (Jankura) Gernat, she had been a lifelong Stratford resident. She met her husband at age 12 years old, graduated Stratford High School, worked for the town of Stratford as a clerk in the Tax Office and then married her loving husband. She enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle, and many board games with her family, as well as doing puzzles and Sudoku's. She was an excellent homemaker, who cared/raised her family with love. She was an excellent cook & baker. Survivors in addition to her beloved husband of 67 years, include her devoted children, Linda Bates and her husband Philip of Enfield, Susan Bard of Stratford and John Mellor and his wife Annette of Ansonia, 6 cherished grandchildren, Anthony and Michael Daglio, Danielle and Justin Bard, John and Jessica Mellor, 2 great-grandchildren, Emma and James Daglio and a close friend of the family, Laurie Birdsey. Ethel was predeceased by her loving brother Robert Gernat. Joseph A. Reilly III, age 65, of Shelton, husband of Karen (Pernice) Reilly, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Joseph was born on October 20, 1958 in Bridgeport. He is the son of the late Joseph A. and Lorraine (Angeski) Reilly Jr. and was a lifetime area resident. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph A. Reilly, IV. He was a United States Air Force Veteran and a retired Bridgeport Firefighter. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, especially enjoying special moments with his grandchildren. Any time he was able to have with his grandchildren made him immensely happy. He was a proud firefighter and when he retired enjoyed being on the golf course. In his earlier years, he enjoyed spending his time camping and waterskiing. If Joe was in a room, you would know it by his distinctive laugh and his telling of jokes - some funnier than others but all came with the same laugh. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters - Michelle Strumello and her husband Sean, and Nicole Reilly and her fiance Joseph Moura; five grandchildren - Peyton Proto, Mia Strumello, Ava Strumello, Gianni Reilly and Antonio Moura; two stepchildren - Crystal Isadore and Vinny Isadore and Crystal's children (Aiden and Essie); four siblings - Timothy Reilly and his wife Terri, Jean Reilly, Judith (Reilly) Joss and her husband James, and George Reilly and his wife Pamela; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Donald H. KIRKHAM, 85, Pastor Emeritus of the Stratford United Methodist, died on December 4, 2023, of complications of Lewy Body Dementia. Born in 1938 to the late Phillip and Mary Anne Kirkham in Sydney, Australia, he was educated at Fort Street Boys' High School, Bathurst Teachers' College, and the University of Sydney. He taught elementary school and worked for the Commonwealth Office of Education. In 1966, Don came to the United States to study at Drew University, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity. While Assistant Minister at St. James Methodist Church in Lynbrook, New York, he met his future wife, Phebe Weissner, and decided to stay in the United States. After being ordained in the United Methodist Church, Don began his ministry in East Village (Monroe). He earned a PhD at Duke University, where he was a Dempster Fellow, before continuing his ministry in West Haven. After teaching theology at Phillips University Divinity School in Enid, Oklahoma, he returned to Connecticut to lead churches in Darien and then Stratford. He continued to teach, focusing on Methodist History and Polity at Yale Divinity School. He was appointed District Superintendent for Central Connecticut and after completing his term, went to Jesse Lee (Easton). Even in retirement, Don served when called, acting as Interim at Monroe. Don was on the Board of Ordained Ministry, United Methodist Homes, and was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference. In his later years, Don spent his summers at his lake cottage in New Hampshire, sailing, canoeing, and observing the eagles and loons. He collected Methodist and John Wesley memorabilia, and researched his family history, publishing Eastenders: The Kirkhams from Poplar. With more time to devote to writing, he was able to revise his doctoral dissertation into a book: Outside Looking In: Early Methodism as Viewed by its Critics, which won the 2020 Saddlebag Selection Award. He was predeceased by his sister Janet. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phebe, daughter Phebe (Eric), son Jonathan (Sarah), grandchildren Phebe, Graydon, Keaton and Katherine, and several nieces and nephews. His surviving family in Australia includes a niece, two nephews, and cousins, whom he remained in close contact with and frequently visited. A Memorial service will be held on at the Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street on Saturday, December 16 at noon (12 PM). LIAN, James W. (Jim) age 82, of Stratford past into eternal rest, Monday, November 27, 2023 in the West Haven VA. Jim was born in Bridgeport, December 12, 1940, son of the Anthony and Anna (Pekar) Lian. He was educated in the Stratford school system graduating from Stratford High School, class of 1968. He proudly served in the US Navy for over 10 years, earning two Good Conduct Medals and several combat medals while in Vietnam aboard the USS Charles S. Sperry (DD697) as a BT1/C . He also served aboard the USS Glennon (DD840) as BT2/C and then the USS Georgetown (AGTR2) as a BT/1C and the Senior Boilerman. While in the military, he attended Boiler Class "A" school at Great Lakes, IL. , also Boiler Class "B" school at Philadelphia PA. He was a member of the Sterling House Tin Can Sailers, American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association, D. A. V. , Amvets, USO, and the Republican National Committee. He was employed by Dresser Industries in Stratford for thirty-two years, until his retirement in 2000. Jim was a longtime friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob, to whom he was eternally grateful for being in his life and saving it. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard (Dick) Lian. Calling hours will be on Monday evening December 4, 2023 from 5pm to 7pm at the William R McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street Stratford. The funeral service will begin at 9 am on December 5, 2023 at the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass of Christian burial celebrated by Father Peter Adamski at 10:30am in Saint James Church, 2110 Main Street, Stratford.
