Eleanor Colletta O'Malley Johnson was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 29, 1939 to Michael and Mary (Call) O'Malley. She was the eighth of thirteen children with five brothers and seven sisters. She passed peacefully at home on November 27, 2023 at the age of 84. Ellie and Cliff Johnson (her husband at the time) settled in Charlotte, NC in the early 1960's, where they raised their four children. She was a quiet and kind person who always saw the good in people. She taught her children to always do at least "one good deed" each day and follow the Golden Rule. Early in her life, she managed to make time for many interests including her Church at the time (Our Lady of the Assumption), Girl Scout Leader, Avon Lady, Waitress, and Nursing School. Once a nurse, she worked at nursing homes until she retired. She felt that the elderly deserved to be treated well and cared for with respect. After retirement, she enjoyed dishing out food samples at Costco for several years. She had many interests and was passionate about her family, gardening, reading, and sports. Football was always on at our house and she enjoyed the Carolina Panther games (good or bad) with her son, Joe. She was humble but very smart and very good at trivia, especially Jeopardy. Oh! She also loved to go to a casino (she was usually lucky) and was able to make one last trip with her daughter and Sister just a few weeks before her death. Her sister, Jean Michalek, also moved to Charlotte with her family and lived only a few blocks away, making it easy for the two families to spend time together regularly. Ellie also enjoyed visits to Ohio with her children to visit with everyone in Cleveland. Her Irish heritage was important to her so St Patrick's Day was an event every year for the family. She loved to play Irish music while eating her annual corned beef, cabbage, and Irish soda bread. Ellie and her sisters planned "sister trips" for many years where they all got together to play cards, gamble, and spend quality time together. She especially loved beach trips. Her bond with her sisters ran deep until the very end and they were there to help care for her in recent months. Although life was not always easy as a divorced mother of four, she was an extremely generous person and always had an open door for the neighborhood kids or when someone needed a place to stay. Her faith was very strong and continued as she faced her illness and death. Ellie knew that God had a plan for her and she accepted her fate faithfully. Ellie is proceeded in death by her parents, sisters Margaret Haney (John-deceased), Patricia Dusick (John-deceased), Michealla Vavrek (Walter), Mary Jane Colleran (Edward - deceased), and brothers Martin O'Malley (Florence - deceased), James O'Malley (JoAnn - deceased), and Edward O'Malley. She was beloved mother to Meg Thompson, Denise Johnson, Patricia Johnson (Doug) and Joseph Johnson (JoAnn) and grandmother to Amy Hanks (Joey) and Sara Harycki (Joe). She was great grandmother to Brennan, Harper, Liam, Jack, and Ruby. Ellie is survived by her siblings Tom O'Malley (Marcie), Kathryn Garven (Chuck) Jean Michalek (Steve - deceased), Donna Moon (Larry - deceased) and John O'Malley (Carol). She had numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Ellie requested mass in her memory with her family, which will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, 12/11/23 at St John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Road, Charlotte, NC 28227. Her final resting place will be alongside her parents at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14609 Brookpark Road, Brook Park, Ohio 44142. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to St. John Neumann Catholic Church (8451 Idlewild Road, Charlotte, NC 28227) or to St. Patrick Parish Death and Dignity fund (3602 Bridge Avenue, Cleveland OH 44113 Irish Blessing May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall upon your fields. And until me meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.Show more

"Dr. Stephen Leo O'Connor July 8, 1959 - November 23, 2023 Steve O'Connor showed us all how to truly live, not just through his words but through the enduring legacy he left in the hearts he touched. We're heartbroken to share that Steve, aged 64, passed away on November 23rd, 2023, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by his family's love. Steve was born on July 8th, 1959, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Thomas and Elaine O'Connor. He was a 1977 graduate of Saline High School where he ran track and cross country. He followed his passion for biology from Albion College to Wayne State University for his medical degree, eventually choosing a life of saving others in Emergency Medicine. For over 33 years, Steve's career was a journey of helping others, from being a Flight Physician at Borgess Inflight Medical Services in Kalamazoo to a Staff Physician at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes to leading Emergency Services in Jasper, Indiana. His professional life was impressive, marked by roles like Medical Director of Vigiles Safety Academy, Chief Science Officer of Liv Labs and Chief Medical Officer of Salutem Health Group. But it was his feats of endurance, completing the Leadville Trail 100-Mile Ultramarathon and seven Ironman Triathlons, that showed his incredible will. Steve was a true renaissance man. When he wasn't at the hospital, he was woodworking, tending to his chickens and bees, brewing kombucha, or exploring new artistic endeavors. He had a wanderlust soul, visiting 41 countries, with Croatia being his most recent adventure with his wife, Michelle. Together, they started Life's Journey Tours in Ecuador, embarking on a new path of spiritual and holistic exploration. In pursuit of this goal, Steve had recently devoted himself to mastering the art of functional and plant medicine. His love and legacy will continue to flourish through everyone he impacted, especially his family. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Michelle; children Christopher (Guiomar Hernan Santesteban), Thomas (Kimberly Schechter), Erin (Brad Roesner), Maggie (Ben Whittle), and Stephen (Mary Elise Dorsett); grandchildren TJ, Nolan, Ryder (Thomas and Kim), Adelaide, Jack, Malachi, and Oakley (Erin and Brad); siblings Sharon O'Connor Knobeloch, Susan (Charles) Still, Thomas O'Connor, Judith (Jim) Bacheldor, Deborah O'Connor Perkins, Kim (Lee) Murphy, and David O'Connor; and many nephews and nieces. Instead of flowers, we'd love for you to support causes close to Steve's heart. Timmy Global Health is an international non-profit organization that Steve worked closely with since 2006. He participated in numerous medical missions through Timmy, including with his children Thomas, Maggie, and Stephen. The second is a scholarship fund that will be set up in Steve's name for a graduating senior of Jasper High School who participates in the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) program and intends on a healthcare career. Steve's life was a tapestry of service, adventure, and love, and his story will continue to inspire us all.
