Scituate, MA

Robert Russell Turgiss of Scituate, MA passed away at home on September 5th after a long, valiant battle with cancer. Robert ("Bob") showed a great deal of stoicism and fortitude throughout his life, which carried him and his family through his final days. Bob is survived by his lifelong love, Susan Turgiss of Scituate, MA, who he first charmed with his boisterous laugh, intelligence, and love for adventure, their daughter Nicole McNally and her husband Dana of Hingham, MA, his sister Beverly Owens and her husband Jonathan of Cavendish, VT, his two grandchildren, Cameron and William McNally who he affectionately referred to as "the cubs", as well as his brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was proud of and devoted to his family and circle of loving friends - forever appreciative of these relationships and always extending a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Those close to Bob might suggest he packed two lives into one. Bob was born in Quincy, MA on July 12, 1946 to Arthur and Bernice Turgiss, and raised in Weymouth where he graduated from high school. With the Vietnam War draft underway, he enrolled as a helicopter pilot with the US Army in 1966. After completing Flight School, he began a year-long tour in Vietnam flying UH-1s and OH-6 "Loaches" for the 1st Infantry Division's Search and Scout units - the latter unit being known as one of the most invaluable yet dangerous Vietnam assignments. Bob's time in Vietnam was followed by a tour in Germany. Upon discharge with special honors including a Bronze Star and several Air Awards, he embarked on what would become a lifelong appreciation of travel by driving his VW Camper Bus through much of Europe. Bob returned home and completed college, finding work as a city planner before going on to obtain a Law Degree from Suffolk University. In 1979, he was accepted to the FBI training program at Quantico, which launched his 24 year career as an agent at the Boston office. Bob loved his time there, especially with the White Collar Crimes unit which complemented his personal interest in financial securities. He retired from the FBI and went on to enjoy a second career assisting Fidelity and other financial institutions with the creation of algorithms to recognize and prevent Securities fraud. When not working, Bob pursued his love of travel, nature walks, history, and read voraciously. Despite a fulfilling career and much personal success, he would tell you that his greatest accomplishment was his family. Bob valued integrity, fairness, and preparedness. Whether it was serving our country & government, helping disabled veterans, volunteering, or even just being mindful of the environment, he chose to see the greater good in the world and honor it until the end. His family hopes others are inspired to do the same. An open house Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at the Lightkeeper's House, 15 Lighthouse Lane, Cohasset, MA 02025 on September 21 from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Robert's name to the team who supported him through treatments and clinical trials: Mass General Hospital Development Office, Dr. Matthew Smith, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114-1101.

Robert Nantel

Robert Nantel

Age - 69

November 22, 2023

Mr. Robert Nantel was born October 30, 1930. He passed away peacefully on August 30, 2000 from a long battle with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. His wife always told him he was a self-made man in everything he did. He was the owner of a mobile mechanic company that serviced commercial vehicles. He worked until he was forced to sell the business due to his illness. Prior to living in the US, he worked for CN (Canadian National) railroad in finance. A perk with CN was taking his family of young children on overnight train rides sleeping in private cabins. His last words expressed his worry leaving behind the love of his life, his wife Therese Nantel. His last wish was for Therese to live with their oldest daughter. In addition to his wife, Robert Nantel leaves behind five children: Marc, Carl, Pearl, Jean and Anne along with their spouses. He had nine grandchildren: Marco, Karin, Michael, Aimee, Laura, Robert, Joe, Kayleigh and McKenzie. He also left behind several great grandchildren, sisters and brothers. Mr. Nantel enjoyed his life fully. He especially loved spending time with his wife and family. In his later years, he enjoyed riding his bike and going for walks with anyone who would meet him. When he lived in Canada, in his earlier years, he had a ritual, after dinner, of going for walks around the block with his family. He loved traveling in his RV going back to Canada and visiting different states in the US. He enjoyed hunting as far back as when he was in his 30's living in Canada bringing home deer, and was a member of the Rifle Club until his death. He enjoyed going to the beach for a few hours with any of his children who would ask him to meet. Marshfield beach was a favorite quick swim while people were at work so he could avoid the crowds. When he first moved to the US, he liked going to Nantasket beach and many times was proud to show he too could stand up on a surfboard and ride the little waves. He was an enthusiast for water sports, even going on a small sunfish boat one of his children had that he always seemed to get a lot of bruises from. He once spent a winter building a rowboat, spending quality time with those who assisted building it, and refurbishing a little motor for it. He once said one of his best memories was the fun he had driving that motorized rowboat to the package store and picking up some beers. Someone would remain in the boat for his return, and they would enjoy the reward of fishing on the way back relaxing with a few beers. In his last weeks in the hospital, he said he had great memories making igloos and ice rinks in the front yard when his children were young. He held onto memories of living close to his siblings of when he was younger and having dancing parties while they played violins and harmonicas. He and his siblings were all musically inclined and self taught. One of his favorite dances they had named 'Le Petit Bonhomme'. It always was a guarantee for laughs and fun. He was an avid gardener taking great pride in all his fruits and vegetables. Every year, he would write down a list of seeds for one of his children to pick up for him at Spag's or anywhere there was a good deal. He always welcomed more seeds. He never could resist holding up a grandchild to reach up high and pick his grapes. It always made him smile. He loved children and animals, always taking good care of them. In his spare time, he liked communicating on his short wave, scanners and ham radio with club members and dabbling with his electronics. He was extremely talented and creative in designing and making beautiful wood bowls, jewelry boxes, etc. He had fun engaging those who would help to nail shingles on a shed he built for his horses. He was an expert welder and designed many things to assist in his garden. He also designed and welded his own bench for lifting weights. Being an avid Canadian hockey fan, he welded a tall satellite dish to watch 'Hockey Night in Canada' on Saturday nights. His last project while in remission, two weeks before the cancer came back, was welding a cart. He never imagined his cancer could come back that easily or that fast. He said he had trouble saying no to any of his children asking for his help. He gave back double the love and support he received no matter the cost. The love for his family was everything to him. Rest in peace sweet Robert, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, sibling and friend who continues to look over us.Show more

John Neil

John Neil

Age - 72

November 6, 2023

John "Jack" Neil, 72, of Scituate, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on November 2nd, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Born to Robert and Althea Neil, of Braintree, MA, Jack grew up one of four siblings in a, curated-by-Sears-Roebuck-Catalogue house, bustling with life and family. Jack's younger siblings; Richard Neil, Andrea Erena, and Sheila Ellsworth, view him as "the best big brother," and have stories for any welcome listener that are equally heartfelt. Please reminisce with them whenever able. Jack understood hard work from a young age, working many jobs in pursuit of a career. When not working or courting his eventual wife Lorie, Jack could be found with his buddies, an incredibly tight-knit group of friends for which Jack was the bond that held them all together. Jack graduated high school, earned a Bachelor's degree, and eventually a Master's in Computer Science; becoming an accomplished computer software engineer at the forefront of the technology industry. Jack had many career accomplishments, but his time at Raytheon was marked with the development of the Patriot Missile System and he counted this as some of his proudest work, something that has helped protect the lives of many service members and citizens. For his contribution, we should be forever grateful. Ironically, or maybe because of his time in the technology industry, Jack had an affinity for antiques, highlighted by his assortment of antique clocks, which have all been allowed to wind-down in mourning, though will eventually spring back to life in celebration at a future date. Living his whole life in the South Shore of Massachusetts, Jack had a love of the water and a distrust for "new" things. Jack is survived by; Lorie, his beloved wife of 39 years; four children, John, Kimberly, Michael, and Kathryn; his above mentioned siblings; and an unnamed boat, Grady '23. Jack maintained the family vessel for 24 years and enjoyed time at the Spit with his friends and family. Jack was a loyal friend, best big brother, loving father, and adoring husband. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 9th, 4 to 8 PM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd. Scituate, MA. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 10th, 9:30 AM at the Funeral Home, followed by Burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow the Burial and will be announced at the cemetery.Show more
