Wayne Earl Sachs, age 87 of Perham, MN, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 30, 2023 in Perham Living surrounded by family. He was on born September 27, 1936 in St. Paul, MN to George and Esther (Groff) Sachs. Wayne went to Rosemount High School and then continued his education to be an iron worker. He worked as an iron worker for over 40 years, helping to construct several bridges and buildings in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Iowa. He was part of the IDS Center in Minneapolis and was involved in helping build the High Bridge in St. Paul. Wayne was united in marriage to Roberta "Bobbie" Zehm on October 20, 1973. Together they raised their blended family with eight children: Sheldon, Marshal, Colleen, Doug, Debbie, Douglas, Donette, and Dwight. They loved each other very much and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Wayne was a master gardener in the Lady Slipper Garden Club of Perham for many years and also in the Lions Club. He enjoyed going out West for hunting, attending Hosta conventions in many places, and loved life and hosting parties on the lake. After his retirement, Wayne worked as a handyman with his good friend Jim. Together they worked on most of the homes on Little Pine Lake. They also converted a home into an assisted living home known as The Autumn Manor. Preceding Wayne in death were his parents, George and Esther Sachs; sisters, Georgia Ruzicka and Elvira Gruett; special nephew, David Berquist; stepchildren, Debbie, Dwight, and Douglas. Surviving Wayne are his sweetie, Bobbie; children, Sheldon, Marshal, Colleen, Doug, and Donette; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wayne will be missed greatly. Merle Wilbur Thompson, age 86, passed away peacefully at the Perham Living care facility on November 27, 2023. He suffered an incapacitating stroke in December of 2016 and was courageous during his illness. Despite his limited physical abilities, he remained a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Merle Wilbur Thompson was born on November 26, 1937 in Frazee, Minnesota and was the first-born child to Milton and Margaret (Clark) Thompson. He grew up on the family farm north of Perham, Minnesota. As a child he went to District #158 Country School through the eighth grade and then attended Perham High School. For six years, Merle served his country with the Army National Guard and did his basic training in California and then in Minnesota from 1959-1965. Merle was introduced to Marian (Van Watermulen) by her brother Gearld. Merle and Marian were married at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham, Minnesota on May 18, 1964. He drove truck for the Perham Egg Plant from 1957-1967 and then worked for the Otter Tail County Highway Department until retiring in December 2000. In addition to his full-time job, Merle worked part-time for Meyers Service Station in Perham for many years. After retiring, Merle and Marian spent 16 years of their winter months in South Texas where they met many dear people who became good friends. While wintering in Texas, Merle volunteered for the local Rio Grande tourism department, helped pick oranges for food shelves, was an active member of their parks' bike club, and handcrafted beautiful stained-glass art that is treasured by family and friends. Summers were spent in Perham, and Merle worked for several years at the Perham Lakeside Golf Course during the summer golf season doing maintenance and mowing the course. He also volunteered for the Perham Chamber of Commerce and drove the "train" for rides on the Perham Express during the summer months entertaining tourists of Perham. Merle was a hard-working and loyal family man. He worked with a positive attitude and without complaint to help provide for those he loved. He enjoyed spending time with family, camping, riding the bike trails, working on his '56 Ford pickup truck, and restoring old tractors and collecting Farmall and Ford collectable toys. He had a way of lighting up a room with his genuine smile. He was an avid handyman and could literally fix almost anything. He would often be found picking up garbage when out for his walks or bike rides. He cared about the environment and was fond of the saying 'leave it better than how you found it'. Merle made those around him feel loved and cared for. He had endless patience with children and his kindness, humor and friendship were felt by all he interacted with. He was very proud of his two children and loved watching his two granddaughters grow up to be intelligent and caring adults and adored his precious great-grandchildren. As a child of God, Merle led by example and did leave this world a better place for all who had the good fortune of knowing him. Merle is survived by his wife of 59 years Marian, daughter Maxine (Jay) Thomas, son Mark (Jill), granddaughters Chelsey (Dan) Steinlicht, Samantha (Chad) Schulz, and great-grandchildren Ellie, Lauren, Addison and Jake Steinlicht, and Walker Schulz, along with his sister Linda (John) Kindt, his brothers Dennis (Karen) Thompson, Ivan Thompson, and beloved nieces and nephews. Merle was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Margaret Thompson, his sisters, Doreen Lois Thompson and Karen (Thompson) Dreyer. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 4th from 10:00-11:00 a. m. followed by the Memorial Mass at 11:00 a. m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham. Father George Michael will officiate. Interment will be at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery in Perham, MN. Richard Byer, age 86 of Perham, MN, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, November 26, 2023 on his way to town to buy vegetable oil, a missing ingredient he needed to bake a cake. Richard Leo Byer was born in Frazee, MN on June 19, 1937, the son of Anton and Cecillia (Joachim) Byer. After high school, Richard worked as a hired-hand, helping on local farms. He also spent some time working at a turkey plant before enlisting in the Army. Soon after being honorably discharged from the Army, Richard starting driving truck for Land O'Lakes in 1964. This began a lifelong career as a truck driver. He went on to receive The Million Mile Award for safe driving and eventually retired from the road in 2003. While attending singles dances, Richard met Dorothy. Together they loved polka dancing and were married October 2, 1993. Dorothy was the love of Richard's life and they worked well together to raise their blended family. Dorothy passed away June 12, 2023 and some who know Richard well may say he died of a broken heart. Richard will be remembered for his love of polka music and dancing with Dorothy. He also loved to cut and split wood and go fishing with his sons. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church helping with the cemetery by cutting grass and leveling and raising older monuments. Richard could fix most anything. He may have not used textbook instructions, but when he was finished, it worked! Preceding Richard in death were his parents; his wife Dorothy; his son Darwin Byer; and his siblings Harold Byer, Irene Byer, Alberta Moore, and Leonard Byer. Visitation will be 5:00-7:30 p. m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 on Friday, December 1 at Schoeneberger Funeral & Cremation Service in Perham. John Edward Kelly was born on March 9th, 1941, and passed away on November 11th, 2023. John was born at his grandfather's home in Alexandria, Minnesota to Edward and Mary (McCabe) Kelly. He grew up in Fargo and attended St. Mary's school before graduating from Shanley High School in 1958. John was the two-time Most Valuable Player for the Fargo Legion baseball program in the late 1950's. He is one of only three players in Fargo Legion history to be accorded with that honor twice. In 2008, he was inducted into the Fargo American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame and was surrounded by family and friends for this event. He was an All-State athlete in both football and basketball at Shanley High School in Fargo and attended the University of Minnesota for two years on an athletic scholarship playing football and baseball before transferring to Minnesota State University Moorhead. John earned his degree in 1964, majoring in business and education and served in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1963 to 1969. John married his wife Connie (Stewart) Kelly on August 22, 1964. John and Connie had two children, Lynn and Dave. John spent over 40 years in the insurance industry working as a claims adjuster and claims manager for The Hartford, Great American, and Concord General. Their summers were spent at their cabin on Big Pine Lake near Perham, Minnesota, where John enjoyed running, fishing, and happy hours with everyone on the beach. In 2004, he retired to Little Pine Lake where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as well as golfing, exercising at the Perham Area Community Center (PACC), and beating any challenger in pickleball. John is survived by his wife Connie, children: Lynn (Chris) DeConcini, Dave (Nancy) Kelly, and his five grandchildren: Alex (Niki), Ryan (Sydney Fritz), Jack DeConcini, and Bailey and Devon Kelly, as well as two greats, Owen and Lily DeConcini. He is also survived by a brother and two sisters: Rick, Betty, and LuAnn. He was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother, Gene. Stafford P. Erickson (Staff), age 92 of Perham MN, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023, at home with his wife by his side. Staff was born on January 20, 1931, in Mentor, MN to Arthur and Julia (Christianson) Erickson. After graduating from high school, Staff enlisted in the Air Force and served three years in Japan during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. In 1955, Staff married the love of his life, Joyce Gauthier. Staff and Joyce have two children: Jody and Jed. While living in Coon Rapids, Staff spent 30 years as an Executive with Orrin Thompson Homes. Staff and Joyce then moved to a home they built in Pine City, living on the Snake River. It was here that Staff started a home construction and remodeling company. In 1996 they moved to Perham, to be near family and enjoy retirement. Staff enjoyed many hobbies with family and friends. He loved fishing, hunting, and especially woodworking. He was a passionate competitor at cribbage and card games. A highlight for Staff was spending time with family and friends. He will be loved and missed by so many. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Erickson of Perham; children, Jody (Gene) Bisson of El Dorado Hills, CA and Jed Erickson of Richmond, VA; brother-in-law, Don Bjelland and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his parents; one brother, Gordon Erickson (Corinne); and sisters, Ruth Miller (Earl), Mildred Hughes (Lyle), and Ilene Bjelland. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, November 10, 2023, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham.
