William Leatherwood

Age - 75

August 29, 2023

Born on February 18th 1948, in Felton, GA, to the late J. T. Leatherwood and Naomi Addison Leatherwood, William "Willie" Luther Leatherwood passed away peacefully, in his Heflin, AL, home, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, on the evening of August 19th , 2023, at the age of 75. William is the youngest of eleven children. He is proceeded in death by his brothers and sisters: Pearlie, Edward, Lurlene, Agnes, Shirley, Curtis, Sylvia, and Doug. He is survived by his son Glenn Leatherwood of Cedartown, GA (wife: Donna Leatherwood), son Craig Leatherwood of Cedartown, GA (wife: Jessica Leatherwood), daughter Nicole George of Rockmart, GA (husband: Blake George), daughter Sheree Nicholson of Rockmart, GA (husband: Nicholas Nicholson), sister Betty Jo Clark of Douglasville, GA, brother Muller Leatherwood of Buchanan, GA, and ten grandchildren: Kristen Leatherwood, Blake Leatherwood, Alyssa Leatherwood, Bryson Rogers, Dayton Leatherwood, Braden Rogers, Anna-Reese Leatherwood, Danner Nicholson, Baxlee Rogers, and Dallas Nicholson. William was an extraordinarily skilled carpenter and spent may years constructing homes in Georgia and Alabama. He also spent many of his younger years traveling the Southeast to offer his skill in efforts to rebuild storm damaged areas. William settled on a farm in Cleburne County, AL, where he enjoyed his days, with his dogs Beau and Luke, listening to classic Rock and Roll, caring for the home and land, swimming the Tallapoosa River, fishing in the pond, and caring for wild horses. To know Willie was to love him, and if he knew you, he had a nickname for you. Everyone had a nickname. The chosen few were invited to buy-in for a nickel at his Saturday morning poker games. These games included a couple of beers, a few snacks, and, no matter if you were winning or losing, you must talk crap to the other players. Steaks were high. Whomever won had bragging rights for a least a week. William's handpicked, special gambling buddies would receive a call, every week, to pick your favored football team and wager one dollar. This would include several phone calls, during the course of the game, to either let you know he was winning or to let the know the refs had cheated. If you were lucky enough to enjoy the game with him, in person, you had won the lottery and a guaranteed good time. It was never about the gambling, but always about the connection and spending time together with a great friend. Willie had a list of people he called every few days to check in on them. These were his people. He loved and cherished these people and found it very important to hear their voice and make sure they were doing ok. These conversations were his favorite part of the day. No matter how sick he had become, he would never complain, and in most cases, not even let you know he was sick. Willie was such a selfless man. He never wanted anyone to worry about him. He lived every single day, never complaining, and always making the most out of any hand he was dealt. Even in his very last days, William got up, enjoyed the company of his kids and grandkids, and laughed and made jokes. His kids and grandkids were his reason for living. He loved them more than words could describe. William was an inspiration to everyone around him to live every day we are given to the fullest. William's children will be hosting a "Beer with Willie" memorial service at Brannon Perryman Cemetery in Buchanan, GA, where he will be laid to rest with his mother, father, and brother, Doug, on Saturday, September 9th , 2023 at 10am EST.
