Stephen J. Quinn, 85, a lifelong resident of Struthers, OH passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Assumption Village after being released from St. Elizabeth's Hospital Boardman following a brief illness. Stephen was born on February 26, 1938 to Thomas and Mary Grimm Quinn. He was a proud graduate of Struthers High School Class of 1957. After graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1961 and served in the 15th Infantry Division. He was stationed in Germany for 13 months as part of the U. S. patrol of the Berlin Wall. Upon returning from his military service, he was employed by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad for 30 years as procurement and transportation clerk. Never one to stay idle for long, he was employed at Giant Eagle in Poland after his retirement from the railroad. Traits he learned in the Army such as tidiness and punctuality, attention to detail and the appreciation of lasting friendships followed him his entire life. A very devout man, Stephen was a member of the Christ Our Savior Parish (formerly St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church) in Struthers where he was baptized and from where he shall receive his final blessing. He was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and enjoyed preparing the church for mass as one of its many ministries. Stephen was the youngest of three children. Both his sister, Kathleen Bowman, and his brother Thomas R. Quinn (Wilma) predeceased him. As a dedicated son, Stephen cared for his parents throughout their lives and remained in and maintained the meticulous family home that gave him so much pride. Stephen had very strong values and was well liked by everyone, mostly due to his gentle but determined nature. Stephen had incredible patience and made time to help others. He loved the outdoors, especially the view from his front porch on his large corner lot. An excellent cook, he was the host of the annual family Christmas Eve dinner and when he was invited to attend other family meals, he was the first to ask what he should bring. Stuffed cabbage was always a requested favorite. Stephen will be forever missed by his nieces, Karen Mettee and Laureen Quinn, and nephew, Thomas Quinn (Patricia). In later years he depended on Karen who took him to his medical appointments, errands and weekly dinners. Left to remember a favorite uncle, he is also survived by his great nieces, Kelly Deconda and Melissa Mettee (David Pinney), his great nephews, Jared Hissem, Bill Mettee (Molly Moldan), Hayden Quinn and Riley Quinn, his great-great nephew, Nolan Hissem and his goddaughter, Leona Scavina (Michael). He was proud of his nieces, nephews and godchildren and of their academic and professional accomplishments. Stephen was a kind and thoughtful person and will be missed by his family and remembered by the many lives he touched in his long, well lived life. He was predeceased by a niece, Jacqueline Hissem. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 12:30 p. m. at Christ Our Savior Parish, 764 Fifth Street, Struthers. Struthers -Gabriella Rose Burke, 21 of Struthers, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes early Tuesday morning, November 21, 2023 Gabriella will always be remembered for her generosity, compassion and infectious laugh. She had a huge smile that would lighten up a room as soon as she walked in. She was born April 20, 2002 in Youngstown the daughter of Lennard and Gina (Nagel) Burke and was a lifelong area resident. Gabriella graduated in 2020 from South Range High School and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center where she studied Early Childhood Development. Gabriella currently was taking class at Eastern Gateway Community College to further her education. Following her passion for children, Gabriella was employed for many years as a teacher for Tiny Tots Preschool & Daycare and most recently with We Care Daycare. She had a way with children and looked forward to spending time with them. Gabriella had many passions throughout her life. She was an avid reader and her favorite color was purple. Gabriella had a huge love for butterflies and animals, especially horses and cherished the time she went out west horseback riding with her family. Gabriella leaves behind to hold onto her precious memories, her dear mother Gina (Teddy) Cabuno of Struthers, two brothers Lenny (fiancee Mary Zelinka) Burke and Austin Burke, maternal grandmother Loretta Nagel and paternal grandmother Cherrill Stankorb, her nephew Mason whom she adored and loved to babysit, a niece that is to be born in December who will honor Gabriella by taking on her name, her boyfriend Robert Norris and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Lennard Burke Sr. and maternal grandfather Jack Nagel. Poland - Dolores R. Romeo, 93, a lifelong resident of Struthers, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Hospice of the Valley-Hospice House surrounded by her loving family. Dolores, known by her family and friends as "Lambie", was born on January 26, 1930 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Henry and Velma (McCurdy) Landgraff. She graduated from Struthers High School in 1948. Dolores was a bookkeeper for Youngstown Sheet & Tube for several years and later for Men-Guer Chrysler-Plymouth in Struthers for over 20 years, retiring in 1993. She was a proud member of Struthers Presbyterian Church, now known as Struthers Parkside Church, where she spent several years as a Deacon, member of her Sunday School class, and the Sunday School superintendent. Dolores had many hobbies. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several different card clubs throughout the years. She enjoyed bowling and later she was a member of the women's bocce league at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society in Lowellville. She loved quilting and was a member of the Where the Corners Meet Quilt Guild in New Wilmington, PA. She also quilted weekly with the Struthers Methodist Church group. Dolores was proud of her craft and hand quilted dozens of beautiful quilts as gifts for her family. She also enjoyed being a member of the Lowellville Senior Citizens group, where she even served as club president. Dolores was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was very active in her grandchildren's lives and loved being involved in their 4-H groups and sporting events. Her family always looked forward to her cooking, mainly her delicious chicken and Sunday sauce. She looked forward to her frequent trips to Ft. Lauderdale to spend time with her son Jim. She loved traveling with her grandson Daniel. Together on their cruises, they visited many unique destinations and they were always the life of the party. Dolores is survived by three children, Regina Romeo of Poland, Carole Romeo of Lowellville, and James Romeo of Fort Lauderdale, FL; three grandchildren, Paolo Ricottilli of Lowellville, Daniel Ricottilli of Cleveland, and Cara (Steve) Susany of Struthers; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Caroline, and Sofia Susany; a brother, James Landgraff of Lowellville; a sister-in-law, Beverly Landgraff of Poland, and several nieces and nephews. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Vincent James Romeo, whom she married on November 14, 1950 and died February 2, 1992; two brothers, Henry W. Landgraff II and Robert Landgraff; two sisters-in-law, Carol Landgraff and Beverly Landgraff; and a son-in-law, George Skrbina. James Pezzone, a lifelong Struthers resident, passed away on October 30, 2023. Born in Youngstown on November 9, 1945 to Anne and Samuel Pezzone, "Jimmy" lived in various areas of Struthers, most notably, the Nebo neighborhood. He could often be found carrying a transistor radio throughout his Struthers travels. Jimmy was known as "The Polka Kid" due to his love of polka music and was an avid caller to WKTL in Struthers to make dedications and requests. Jimmy attended the Masco workshops and then The Purple Cat. Jimmy was an enthusiastic attendee of all ISLE and Golden String activities and was a DJ at Golden String Radio. He loved "Elmton" pizza, the pizza of his family's business and guarded his family's recipes fiercely. Jimmy leaves the love of his life, his wife, Mercedes Jennings Pezzone. "Mercy" rebuffed his advances at first (he proposed three times), before she succumbed to his charms. He also leaves his dedicated sister, Mary Ann Walters. As children, Mary Ann used to pull him around Struthers in a little red wagon. He also leaves behind his loving brother Carmen, another brother, John, is deceased. Jimmy leaves behind many nieces and nephews that loved him very much. He also leaves behind the compassionate staff of ISLE and Purple Cat where he made many lifelong friends. Struthers - William "Bill" James Polis, 96, of Struthers, passed away early Thursday morning, October 26, 2023, after a period of declining health. His passing comes four months after the passing of his beloved wife of over 72 years, the former Margaret "Peg" A. Edwards, whom he married on May 19, 1951. He was born on June 3, 1927, in Hillsville, Pennsylvania, the son of Dominic and Mary (Robb) Pugliese and was a lifelong area resident. In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by his son, William Polis Jr. , his four brothers, Joseph Polis, Frank Pugliese, Patsy Polis, and Dick Pugliese, and his five sisters, Anna Johngrass, Kate Carbon, Jane Moore, Betty Hatala, and Rose Kwolek. William leaves to cherish his memory his children, Gloria (George) Kalafut and David (Josie) Polis, both of Poland; his daughter-in-law, Eleanor "Lee" Polis, of Struthers; his grandchildren, Jessica (Josh) Krumpak, William Polis III, Joseph (Dyana) Polis, George (Susan) Kalafut, Krystle Kalafut (Ignacio Navas Enamorado), Rachel Kalafut, Troy Polis, and Reid Polis; and nine great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. William will always be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, but mostly for always being there to help anyone in need. His strong will and work ethics were prevalent throughout his long life, and these values were instilled in his many family members. William proudly served his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of Corporal while serving with the 75th Fighter Squadron 23rd Fighter Group as an airplane mechanic. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on June 10, 1947. Upon his return home, William began a career as a truck driver, hauling mostly steel over the road with various companies through his membership in the Teamsters Local 377, a career that spanned over 40 years until retirement. William was also known as the "Mayor of Rocky Ledge" because nothing made him happier than walking through the neighborhood and socializing with his friends. He also looked forward to Sunday Pasta Dinners with his family. During the fall and winter months, it was common for pasta dinners to be scheduled around the family's affection for the Dallas Cowboys. After retirement, William became an avid Cleveland Indians fan as well to pass the summer evenings. He enjoyed spending time landscaping around his house, along with tending to his garden. He was always happy to share his yearly harvest with friends and family. Struthers, Ohio - Laurie Edwin "Dutch" Flack, 89, a lifelong resident of Struthers, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Hospice of the Valley-Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. Laurie, known by his family and friends as "Dutch," was born at home on the hottest day on record for the Mahoning Valley, 103 degrees, on July 24, 1934 in Struthers, OH, a son of the late Norman Floyd and Alice Hazel (French) Flack. He graduated from Struthers High School in 1952. Dutch served in the Naval Reserves for four years and later served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Dutch was a lineman/repairman for the Ohio Bell Company in Youngstown for over 40 years, retiring in 1992. He took pride in his work and enjoyed meeting people while making repairs in their homes. Dutch was an active member of Struthers Parkside Church, formerly Struthers Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Struthers Croquet Club and several clubs focused on history and genealogy, and was an avid supporter of Struthers, Youngstown State, and Mount Union football. He was a lifetime blood donor for the American Red Cross. Dutch and Alice Ann enjoyed traveling to 48 states and nine Canadian provinces. They traveled by travel trailer, motorhome, van, train, and riverboat. He was a natural storyteller and always had a joke to tell. He kept a robust social calendar, regularly meeting friends for coffee, lunch, and dinner. He made making memories with his children and grandchildren a priority. Dutch is survived by four children, Brenda Henderson of Struthers, Beth (Tim) Slattery of Poland, Jeffrey (Maria) Flack of Twinsburg, and Linda (Ben) Laubach of Stow; seven grandchildren, Michelle Ondrey, Timothy (Amanda) Slattery Jr. , Logan (Jennifer) Flack, Hannah Laubach, Jason Flack, Caitlin Slattery, and Sarah Laubach; and a great-granddaughter, Margot Slattery. Besides his parents, Dutch was preceded in death by his wives, the former Gail Joyce Ramm, whom he married on April 25, 1958 and died August 12, 1963, and his wife, the former Alice Ann Mound, whom he married on September 25, 1964 and died February 12, 2022; a son, James David Nichols; three brothers, LaVere Flack, Neil Flack, and Francis Flack; and his sister, Lauretta Reinerth. Family and friends may call on Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 9:30 a. m. to 10:45 a. m. at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring Street in Struthers.
