James Walsh Jr

Age - 55

November 30, 2023

James (Jim) Maston Walsh Jr. age 55 of Boomer, passed away Monday, November 27, 2023 at his home. Services will be held at a later date. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Ronald Walsh, C. G. Walsh and Nicholas Britt Riddle. He is survived by a sister Sandra Nelson and husband Romey of Murrells Inlet, SC, a brother Stephen Riddle of Maryland, and a sister-in-law Donna Riddle of Wilkesboro, including nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mr. Walsh was born July 2,1968 in Wilkes County to James Maston and Bleeka Phillips Walsh. Mr. Walsh attended Wilkes Central High school graduating in 1986. Mr. Walsh's long career in the cosmetic industry began in 1986, and thereafter, he enhanced each client's beauty with his great passion and skill. His hair styling service in the field of cosmetology allowed him numerous opportunities to work with innovative and influential stylists. He made many lifelong friends through his career and often enjoyed sharing stories of his time living and working in Key West, Florida. Indeed, Jim was a great storyteller, incorporating humor and whimsical details into each account, and though at first glance his playfulness could sometimes be seen as capricious, Jim had a huge heart. His generosity was often shown through the gift of a piece of art he created, a quilt he hand crafted, a home baked treat, or a beautiful flower he nurtured. Jim was happiest when raising and caring for rabbits, chicks, fish, cats, and puppies; he loved all animals and surrounded himself with them. A natural entertainer, Jim was always ready with his quick, dry wit: Maybe you arrived for his service with a bad hair day, but you left feeling like a million bucks while all doubled over with laughter. With intentional power, Jim utilized his talent and skill in every situation to make others feel better, having an almost magical power to make friends feel like family. Jim had a song for every occasion and a beautiful voice to share. Most of all Jim had a brave heart. He fearlessly faced the end of his life with the strength of steel. His strong faith in the Lord gave him the will to be courageous in life's most difficult of circumstances. The family would like to give special thanks to special friend Andrew Scott Glass and Amie Price Holloway, a great-niece, who provided special care. Special thanks to Jessica Ball with Gentiva Hospice Memorials should be made to American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 28697 or the Humane Society of Wilkes, PO Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28697. Drema Wagner

Drema Wagner

Age - 81

June 29, 2023

Drema Gaye Wagner, 81, of Boomer, went to be with her Savior and loved ones on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at her home. A longtime member of Boomer Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School for 30+ years, along with her various contributions and time aiding Boomer Christian Academy. Outside of working a few years, she prided herself in being a full-time homemaker, devoting herself to her church, home, family, and the community. She raised her grandson, and in later years, was able to assist in part-time caretaking of her great granddaughter. Drema had a huge heart and preferred to assist others under the radar. She was a graduate of Montgomery High School, C/O 59, and married her high school sweetheart, Dale, on March 21st, 1959, during her Senior year. The family joke is that final grade cards were sent home for parental signatures, but her husband signed it instead! Family was her life, and after the devastation of losing both of her children, both age 19, she and Dale had the joy of raising their grandson they didn't know existed until the age of 9. Her heart overflowed with joy at the news that she'd be having a great granddaughter, and 9 years later, a great-grandson. Sadly, during this time, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was given 3 months to live; during this time, she was in rehabilitation to regain her strength, and was able to come home and live independently. This action was one of her many feats of strength and determination, along with the many others in her life that she fought so strongly to overcome. Drema was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ervin and Edith Nibert (Powellton), her loving husband of 55 years, Dale Wagner (Boomer), her daughter and son, Angie and Todd (Boomer), sister Metie Pauley (Handley), and various nieces, nephews, and family members. She is survived by her grandson Todd (Jessica), great-grandchildren Lennyn and Harrison, sister Betty McCarty (Florida), and numerous nieces, nephews, family members and dear friends. Services will be held Friday, June 30, at 12:00 pm at Boomer Baptist Church. Friends and family may come one hour prior for visitation; there will be no graveside services. If you would like to send something other than flowers, her wish would be for you to send a donation to Boomer Baptist Church in her honor. Her family would like to thank everyone at Montgomery Nursing & Rehab; it was truly a time of healing and revitalization that allowed her to push forward. The care and love that she received was immeasurable; we are forever grateful for the extended time we had with her due to her rehabilitation. We would like to send a very special thank you to her sister, Betty, for the endless care and love she showed so much during Drema's difficult hours. Your love and devotion could never be repaid. We'd also like to say thank you to Ruth Powers, JoAnn Null and Irene Brown. Your friendship and consistency brought her a lot of joy. Mary Baker

Mary Baker

Age - 96

January 5, 2023

Mary Rose Baker (Johnson), 96, of Boomer, WV, passed away on December 31, 2022. She was born in Jodie, WV, on August 24, 1926, to the late Bert and Minnie Johnson. In 1946, she met Clarence Baker who "liked the way she combed her hair". They were married in 1947 and went on to have three children, Wayne (deceased), Elaine Price (Ronnie), and Karen Fitzwater (David). While raising her children, she was an exceptional homemaker and seamstress. As her children grew up one-by-one, she affectionately became known as "Nanny" to five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren with whom she was always gentle and patient. Her family was the joy of her life until the very end and nothing brightened her day more than one of the babies running towards her with outreached arms and a jovial, "Nanny!". Of all the words we could use to describe our mom and nanny, perhaps the most fitting is "faithful". Her faithfulness to her family was unsurpassable and her devotion to her Savior was unwavering. Unsurprisingly her 96 years were not without trials, but her faith in Christ was steadfast and she took every opportunity to tell others of His goodness. A devout member of Boomer Baptist Church and a teacher of the Sunbeams Sunday School class for decades, she played an important role in the lives of many generations. Indeed, one of the things we will miss most is her faithfulness to pray for us without ceasing. She was reunited in Heaven with her parents, brothers Glen and Garling Johnson, sister Edith Holcomb, devoted husband of 68 years, Clarence Baker, and son Wayne Baker. Family will receive visitors at O'Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery, WV, at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023. The funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 pm with David West officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, WV, with Pastor Mark Stickland. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Hubbard Hospice House West for the care they provided to her. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in her memory to Boomer Baptist Church, Boomer Christian Academy,Show more
