James Whitfield

James Whitfield

Age - 66

November 29, 2023

Heaven is a little brighter and more joyful now because Jim Whitfield's spirit was escorted there by the angels on November 24, 2023, when he passed away peacefully. James Lee Whitfield was one of eight children born to the late Herbert G. and Juanita Rose (Bryce) Whitfield. He was born on September 19, 1957. Jim had a very full life. He worked full time at Logan Industries, until a few years ago when he transitioned to participating in Logan's Studios Program. He participated for decades in several Special Olympics sports and was proud of the many medals he was awarded. Jim loved the Indianapolis Colts, Notre Dame football and basketball, cheeseburgers, pizza and bud lite, but above all else, Jim loved his long-time housemates, Joel Hamburg and Steve Seymour. He also had a deep appreciation and affection for the staff of his home and in particular, Dan Horning, Jeffery Reed and Barb Damon and all the rest of his devoted supported living team past and present. Jim had a very special love and friendship with Sally Hamburg, who returned his affections. Many people who knew Jim said he was the most polite person they ever met. The saying "to know him is to love him" certainly fit Jim. He was exceedingly kind and cheerful. He has a gift for making friends and uplifting the spirits of those he encountered. Jim will be missed but will be remembered fondly by the many people whose lives he touched. We wish to thank the staff at Southern Care Hospice who provided excellent care for Jim. Funeral Services for Jim will take place at the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. , South Bend, on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 11 a. m. with visitation beginning at 10 a. m. Jim's ashes will be placed for eternal rest at Cedar Grove Cemetery, located on the Notre Dame campus at a later date. Donations can be made in Jim's honor to, Logan Protective Services, 2505 E. Jefferson Blvd. , South Bend, IN 46615 or to Camp Millhouse, 25600 Kelly Rd. , South Bend, IN 46614. To to the family or in memory of James Lee Whitfield, pleaseShow more

She married Leo Joseph Murphy on June 5, 1949. Jean and Leo had ten children. They adopted numerous collie dogs and stray cats.
