Robert E. Nyholt of North Branford passed away on Monday October 2 at Apple Rehab in East Haven. He was the husband of the late Gail Shinn Nyholt and the father of Michael Nyholt (Elaine) of Wallingford and Robert Nyholt of Solon, Maine. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Faith, Bethany, and Frederick. He was predeceased by his daughter Gwen Nyholt and his sister, Julie Broderick. Robert was born in Guilford on April 28, 1933, a son of Ruurd (Jack) and Pauline Nyholt. He was a truck driver for many years, most recently for Quality Carriers in Branford. Bob, as everyone called him, was a lifelong lover of the ocean that started when he joined the US Navy. He spent most weekends at Pier 66 in Branford working on his boat and enjoying time with friends. Along with his wife Gail they spent countless summers vacationing along the coast of Long Island. After retirement he enjoyed golfing with friends and vacationing in Aruba. He often mentioned being lucky enough to be part of his grandchildren's lives as long as he did. Even in his last days he brought smiles to the faces of his aides, nurses, and the staff at Apple Rehab. He will be missed by many. A memorial service honoring both Robert and his wife Gail will be held at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford on Monday at 11:00. Friends may call prior to the service from 10-11:00. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth (Betty) Herrmann, age 93, of Branford, CT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Betty was born in New Haven, CT on June 13, 1930, daughter of the late Thomas and Natalie Hughes. Betty was the wife of the late Robert Herrmann, Sr. Betty graduated from Commercial High School in New Haven and worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company until the time she met her husband and moved to Branford in 1955. She began a new career in 1976 at the Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club where she worked for 40 years until her retirement in 2016 at the age of 85. Betty enjoyed antiquing, spending Sunday's traveling the shoreline with her friends, musicals, trips to Cape Cod, Vermont, and the casino. Later in life, Betty enjoyed going to the Branford Senior Center and meeting new friends. Betty was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Branford. Betty is survived by her children, Cheryl Levine (David) of Branford, Karen Baptie (Rob) of North Haven and Rob Herrmann (Sue) of Stamford; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Chris), Matthew, Elizabeth, Will, Samantha and Alexandra; her great granddaughter Stassia; and her siblings, Patricia Goff of Placentia, CA, and Robert Hughes of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas, John, Michael and Richard Hughes and her sister Anne Hughes Doty. Her funeral will leave the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, Friday morning at 10:00 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at St. John Bosco Parish, at 10:30. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Visiting hour prior to Mass is from 9:00 - 10:00 at the funeral home. In Branford, CT, Michael (Mikey) Castiglione, 82, passed away peacefully November 22, 2023, at Hospice in Branford. Born in New Haven, he lived in Northford for the early part of his life and since 1968 he resided with his late wife Elaine of 57 years in Branford. He was the son of the late Salvatore and Nelle Castiglione of Northford. He is survived by sons Jason Michael Castiglione, (Kristen) of West Lake, FL and Marc Jon Castiglione, (Anna) of Branford, CT; sisters Elaine Mandy and Roberta Flagge; 10 nieces and nephews and his beloved granddaughters Gianna Rae Castiglione of Branford, Kristina Lorenzo Bishop (James) of River View, FL, and four great grandchildren Rowan, Asher, Harlow Jade and Laken Bishop. He attended the University of Bridgeport where he studied Industrial and Graphic Design, later going on to become Marketing Services Manager of several local companies which included US Repeating Arms Company, Burndy Corporation, several agencies, and Echlin Manufacturing Company where he retired from in 2001. He started, owned, and operated The Frame Gallery of Branford for 18 years before selling it in 1992. He served proudly in the Connecticut National Guard from 1963 to 1969 as a medical specialist. He and his late wife Elaine spent many winters following their retirement basking in the warmth of the Florida sun in Deerfield Beach, FL. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 4th at 11:00 am at St. Mary Church of St. John Bosco Parish in Branford. His ashes will be interred next to his wife Elaine Castiglione in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford immediately following Mass. In lieu of flowers, any donations should be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Branford or St. Jude Cancer Research Hospital for Children.Show more

Robert J. Far of Milford entered into rest on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Madison House. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to the love of his life, Francine (D'Andrea) Far. Robert was born in Derby on January 14, 1945, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Pisacane) Far he was a resident of Trumbull, Connecticut later relocating to Sarasota, Florida and finally settling for the last 30 years in Milford, Connecticut. He was a very successful, self-made, entrepreneur, owning and operating many businesses in Connecticut and Florida during his life; a Danish Hearth Restaurant & Bakery, a Carvel, Arco Service Station, Far & Far Property Management and Ferney's Heavy Duty Towing. He also enjoyed more than a decade working in Investigations for Mohegun Sun Casino and finally, in retirement, working along side his son, Darin, at his business, Connecticut Firearms and Tactical. Robert was always involved in his town, be it serving on Town Councils or Resident Associations. Robert Far was the definition of work hard, play hard. One of the distinct highlights of his life was having the opportunity to race his power boat "Far Out" with his son in the American Powerboat Association of Florida. Robert fostered his daughter's deep love of animals, especially horses, that has carried thru to this day. Robert was always the life of the party and his friends and family loved him for his outrageous sense of humor and loving heart. Besides Francine, Robert is survived by his children, Darin Far of Fairfield and Daria (Ron) Nettleton of Clinton ; his loving grandchildren, Cole and Ava Nettleton and Brooklyn Far; his former daughter in law, Jen Far; sisters in law, Jean Far and Mary Grace D'Andrea; nephew Chris Far and his wife Mary Ann, and brothers in law; Frederick Fulton and Frank (Janis) D'Andrea as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving daughter in law Dorothy (Chrostek) Far, nephew Glenn Far, sister in law Betty Lou Fulton, brother, Vincent Far and sister Louise Far and sister-in-law Ann Marie D'Andrea. Surrounded by her loved ones at CT Hospice, Catherine R. Cast, of Branford, CT sadly passed away on November 17, 2023, after a long illness. Cathy was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Edward and Catherine (Lee) Haig on New Year's Eve, 1933. She graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in 1952. Harry and Cathy were married on June 11, 1955, beginning their life together, raising their family in New City, NY before moving to Branford, CT in 1978. Catherine (Cathy) was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an active communicant of St. Therese Catholic Church, and a member of the choir for many years. Cathy loved watching her children and grandchildren in all their activities, and especially watching the UConn women's basketball team. Cathy is survived by her husband of 68 years, Harry J. Cast. She is also survived by her children Donald (Lori) Cast, Ginny (Barb) Cast, Laurie Cast, Ellen (John) Kemble, Nancy (Bryan) Steinke, James (Nina)Cast, and Peter (Elissa) Cast, and her grandchildren Linda (Vann) Cast, Joshua (Rachel) Cast, Justin Cast, Tyler Cast, Garrison (Catherine) Carafa, Kaitlin (Ben) Roberts, Dillon Kemble, Katrice (Michael) Rebeschi, Donovan Steinke, Spencer Steinke, Ryan Cast, Jessica (Nicholas) Bessette, Zac (Elizabeth) Cast, and Noah Cast, and her great-grandchildren David Garrison, Crosby Garrison, Nathan Cast, Gabriella Cast, Justin Cast, Ariya Cast, Jackson Carafa, Maeve Carafa, Arthur Carafa, Gwyneth Carafa, Graham Roberts, and Julian Bessette. Patricia Neal Leinster, daughter of the late Carroll and Dorothy Neal of Branford, Connecticut (and later Walpole, NH) passed away on November 9, 2023. Born in Guilford, Connecticut, Pat grew up in Branford. She shared many happy memories of being surrounded by her beloved extended family on Goodsell Point Road, time spent with her Harlow and Neal grandparents and loving aunts and uncles, hours spent at the Branford Library and on the Branford River, and fun times in high school, where she met her husband David. Pat attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia and later received her bachelors and masters degrees from Keene State College. She became a teacher and taught high school English for many years. In her retirement she enjoyed working on research projects including family and local history. In 1956, she married David Leinster, also of Branford. They celebrated 60 years of marriage and created a home in Westmoreland, New Hampshire where they lived for close to 50 years; children and grandchildren remember many a cozy day spent in Westmoreland enjoying a family dinner and a fire in the fireplace. Pat organized yearly family vacations on Cape Cod, a tradition that has carried through the generations and reflects what a special place the Cape has been to our family. Pat is predeceased by her husband David and leaves three daughters, Anne Windham and her husband Ryder of Providence, Rhode Island and their two daughters Dorothy Margit and Violet Ruth; Chaipel Leinster and her husband Mitchell Gowans, also of Providence; and Katherine Leinster-O'Connor and her husband Robert O'Connor and their two children Claire Katherine and William Denis of Keene, New Hampshire. A private service and burial will be held in Branford, Connecticut.
