Robert Kent May of Garden City went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, April 16, after a short hospitalization in Wichita. Born Sept 8, 1951, in Miami, Oklahoma, Robert attended Owasso (Oklahoma) High School, where he met the love of his life, Martha Raechel Whitelock. The two married in 1970 and enrolled at Pittsburg State University in Eastern Kansas, where both earned degrees. Robert worked as an inspector in a variety of industrial settings -- but the twin callings of family and faith reigned foremost for him. He and Martha dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to raising their two children, Ron and Summer, and fostered two more, Christian and Jeremy. Robert actively served the congregation at Garden City's First Southern Baptist Church as a deacon, and before that, he and Martha led the youth group at the Pearl Street Baptist Church in Paola, Kansas for 16 years, teaching Sunday School and leading mission trips around the United States and to Mexico. Robert and Martha were fortunate last October to visit the Holy Land, a longtime dream of theirs that came true just in time -- after 52 years of marriage. He was a devout, loving, kind man and he will be missed by many. Robert is survived by his wife Martha, son Ron and wife Kristen, daughter Summer and husband Matthew Miller, grandchildren Allison Burton, Brealynn May, Rhett May, Isabella Lieneman, Caleb Miller, Joseph Miller and Raelynn Miller, and great-grandson Daxton May. He is preceded in death by his parents Clarabelle and Raymond May, sisters Maxie Macy and Ann Bohannon, and grandson Jeremiah Miller. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 28 at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden city. The service will be live streamed on the Garnand Funeral Homes Facebook page. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the FSBC Missions fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home. Condolences may be given at garnandfuneralhomes. com.
