Jerry Waller stepped into eternity with her Redeemer Jesus on December 7, 2023. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who will be missed by those who knew her. Jerry was born on December 17, 1929 to the late Albert Henry and Maude Couch Williams in Alexandria, Alabama. A 1948 graduate of Anniston High School, she began working as a switchboard operator for the Bell System while still in high school. In February 1954, she met the love of her life, Jacob Winfield Waller, III, who was making repairs at the office where she worked. They were married in October of that year, and were blessed with forty-seven years together. After the birth of their children, Jerry left the switchboard behind and was devoted to being a mother and homemaker. When Jake retired in 1987, she became the navigator as they traveled in their RV to Alabama football games, golf tournaments, almost every state in the US (including Alaska), and portions of Canada. By this time grandchildren started coming, and they became her delight and joy, especially when they traveled with Memaw and Grandaddy in the RV. Jerry was a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class. At Shades she helped with Vacation Bible School, Power Lunch, and sang with the Jubilee Senior Choir. For eleven years Jerry served as a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Heart of Dixie Bells Camping Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake, and her grandson, Austin Waller. Margaret Hiller

Age - 103

December 9, 2023

Mary Margaret "Peggy" Potter Hiller passed away on December 4, 2023, at her home in Birmingham, Alabama. Only days shy of 104 years old, she was able to enjoy the company of her family and friends until her last moments. Peggy was born on December 17, 1919, to Ella Leota Sparks Potter and Louis Horace Frederick Potter in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After graduating from Chattanooga High School, she attended Edmondson School of Business. When her family moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1939, she worked at Yeilding Brothers and Prudential. In 1947, Peggy married George Samuel Hiller Jr. of Jasper, Alabama. She became the gracious "First Lady of Jasper" when George was elected mayor in 1949. Peggy worked alongside her husband in civic affairs and in the family's pharmacy, Peoples Drug Store, which was a landmark in Jasper for 63 years. During the years at Peoples Drug, she enjoyed working with two other George Samuel Hillers-her son and her father-in-law-three generations of Hiller pharmacists. Peggy and George celebrated 50 years of marriage before George's passing in 1998. She was proud to be the matriarch of a large family and is survived by her three children, George Samuel Hiller III (Lynda), Margaret Hastings Hiller Bentley (Danny), and Mary Ellen Hiller Holladay (Hugh); five grandchildren (who called her "MeMaw"), Luther Daniel Bentley IV (Aimee), Mary Margaret Hiller Plumridge (Scott), Maryellen Bentley Stockton (Matt), Rebecca Anne Hiller Moore (Robert), and Kathryn Hastings Holladay; and 11 great grandchildren, Luther Daniel Bentley V, Annalee Hastings Bentley, George Basil Stockton, Mae Hastings Plumridge, Charles Samuel Bentley, Robert Dunseath Moore IV, Elizabeth Clare Plumridge, Tristan James Bentley, Anna Frances Plumridge, Margaret Winifred Stockton, and George Hiller Moore. Peggy was predeceased by her husband (George Samuel Hiller, Jr. ); her sisters (Edna Potter and Carolyn Oppenborn); her brother (Louis Horace Potter Jr. ); and both of her parents. Peggy, a dedicated witness in the service of Christ, recognized her blessings and was generous in sharing with others. She was a member of First Christian Church in Jasper, Alabama, where she was the first female Elder, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the choir. Upon her move back to Birmingham in 2005, she attended Valley Christian Church. Peggy studied the Bible and regularly composed devotionals. She had just completed writing one for Christmas of 2023. Peggy loved words. She was a poet, especially around the holidays. Her rhyming toasts were a much-anticipated tradition during Hiller family gatherings. Along with her Bible, she kept a book of crossword puzzles on her end table. When she stumbled upon a good riddle, she loved sharing it. No doubt, many of her friends and family keep Peggy's writings and shared words alongside their favorite keepsakes. Her clever voice will echo among the many people she loved and who loved her. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the loving caregivers from Concierge Caregivers. Funeral services will be held at Valley Christian Church, 2600 Cherokee Place, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35216 on December 22, 2023, with visitation at 1:00 PM and service at 2:00 PM. James Fink

James Fink

Age - 88

December 8, 2023

James Arthur Fink, 88, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully at home on November 29, 2023. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty-four years Norma Morucci Fink, his four children Lisa Weaver (Roy) of Birmingham, AL, Jim Fink of Charlotte, NC, Jeff Fink (Farley) of Anniston, AL, and Cathleen Hudson (Ben) of Birmingham, AL; his thirteen grandchildren Cathryn Weaver Brady (Joe), Clair Weaver Hanson (John), Anne Margaret Weaver Smith (Slade), John Weaver, Alex Fink, Jack Fink, Billy Fink, Grace Fink Brown, Adele Fink, Camille Fink, Ben Hudson (Sara), Claudia Hudson Puhnaty (Justin), Lucy Hudson, fourteen great grandchildren, and his brother Jack Fink (Connie) of Danville, IL. He was born in Clinton, Iowa on November 15, 1935 to Katherine Louise Hoosack and Jack Raymond Fink. He was raised in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School. He then attended the University of Notre Dame and was a faithful and enthusiastic alumnus throughout his life. Jim started his career with Republic Steel Corporation in Youngstown, Ohio where he met and married the love of his life on May 16, 1959. They were transferred numerous times to accommodate his career with Republic Steel until settling in Gadsden, Alabama where he served as plant manager and raised their family. He served in numerous executive roles during the final season of his career before retiring and moving to Birmingham. His greatest joys in life were his family and his faith. He was known as Poppie to his grandchildren. He loved to share stories of his childhood that would often grow in exaggeration as the years passed, his enthusiasm for Notre Dame, and giving his humorous and thoughtful perspectives on life. Sunday lunches were always a time to gather together as a family and he ensured there was more than enough of his contribution to the meal. It was usually over seasoned but always plenty to spare. For over ten years he sent a Bible verse daily to his children and grandchildren to encourage them in their faith, remind them of his love for them and include birthday or anniversary wishes. He had a passion for hunting and fishing throughout his life because it was time spent with family and friends. He was always willing to coordinate or be a guest of a hunting or fishing trip. Jim had a daily routine of walking two of his favorite companions, their dogs Annabelle and Betsy. Always wearing Notre Dame apparel, carrying his phone with the fight song as the ringtone, it was his opportunity to socialize with his neighbors and ensure his dogs got their exercise for the day. His life was marked by gratitude for all the good things he was able to enjoy throughout his life. Even in the most difficult times, because of his faith, he would remind or encourage us to focus on the Lord’s goodness. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will be carried out through those he loved and loved him. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the charity of your choice.Show more
