She moved from Apalachicola to Port St. Joe in 1975, where she lived until after receiving her liver and kidney transplants from Mayo Clinic on October 2, 2011. A short time after her double transplant, she moved back to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, to live with a daughter and son-in-law, where she stayed until her passing. Doris lived her life taking care of her children and providing each one with the love, compassion, and direction to sadly one day move forward in this life without her. Doris worked throughout her young life to help provide for her children. She shucked oysters, picked crabs, worked retail, waitressed, and later volunteered her time sitting with various patients at the hospital in Port St. Joe. She was an amazing woman that had a smile to light up an entire room and a laughter that was so pure. Doris deeply enjoyed spending time with her children and found great pride in each of their accomplishments. Doris had many talents over the years and enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, gardening and mod-podge. Doris had an amazing 'green thumb' and could grow such beautiful roses, trees, and plants. Doris was always dressed to perfection upon rising every day. She cherished her close friends and companions with multiple daily phone calls to discuss life and upcoming events. There will be a large and empty hole for all that knew and loved Doris. Doris was preceded by husband, Robert Lee Johnson; daughter, Lisa Given; son-in-law Billy Given; father, Fred Joseph Thompson; Mother, Nina Viola Garnett Thompson; maternal grandparents, George Curley Garnett and Edna Mae Williams; paternal grandparents Andrew Thompson and Lucy Mae Beard. Lars Dalen

Lars Dalen

Age - 86

November 8, 2023

On Monday October 30th Lars Johan Dalen (86) our beloved father passed away. He was born March 10th, 1937 in Porsgrunn Norway, during a snowstorm, to Jens and Ingrid Dalen. Lars grew up in a loving Christian home. His father, Jens, was a pastor. During World War II, Lars' father was arrested and put in jail by the Nazi. Lars was around 7 years old at that time. Lars plotted, with his school friends, to retaliate against the soldiers. They prepared snowballs. The young boys plummeted the Nazi with their snowballs and were therefore chased in the woods by the soldiers. Lars always bragged about fighting in World War II. Lars attended Fredtune, a one-year prep-school, in Stavern, Norway where he met Tennia, his life's partner. Lars and a fellow class mate sailed on a passenger ship across the Atlantic to be with Tennia and to follow The American dream. Lars arrived in New York on Pier 42 on May 22nd 1955 with $54 in his pocket! Tennia Janet Gundersen and Lars were married in West Orange, NJ September, 15th, 1956. Together they created a total of 6 beautiful children. Lars could only say, "Yes, No" and "I love you" in English when he arrived in America. During those early years, Lars was active in church, learning the English language, becoming a father and working a full-time job. On top of all that, he also enrolled in night classes to achieve his GED. He then continued studying at Rutgers University for four years and became a Mechanical Engineer. After University he worked a few years as an Engineer for Maxwell House in New York. He eventually moved with the family back to Norway and worked a few years there. However, he and the family found their way back to The United States. Lars worked for many years as Engineer at Coastal Oil Company in West Memphis, Arkansas where he among other things designed complex packaging systems, and worked his way up to Vice President The last 20+ years Lars immersed himself in retirement life here in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Lars and Tennis loved participating in the Ecumenical Choir. Lars enjoyed bible study and was always up for a deep biblical discussion. Lars and Tennia hosted numerous dinner parties at the house on Nursery Dr. with friends and golfing companions. Lars was a long-time participating member of Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club. He cherished his friends and time spent there. I'm sure he bragged, once or twice to his friends, about his hole-in-one he had in Texas. The last 8 years Lars became caretaker of Tennia. He considered it a privilege. He was by her side till the end. What a beautiful example of unconditional love. Lars loved the Lord Jesus Christ and was ready to meet his maker and be with his beautiful wife Tennia. However, to his family he was The Patriarch! His wisdom, guidance, love, advice, support and prayers will be deeply missed. Preceding in his death were his parents Jens and Ingrid Dalen; daughter, Joni Helene Dalen. Lars is survived by his brother Ivar (Anne Magrete) Dalen; children John (Ingvild) Dalen, Janet (Buddy) Love, Joyce (Frank) Lyman, Judy Dalen, Jenice Dalen along with 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 PM, November 18, 2023 at Good News Methodist Church; 4747 US-98, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459. James Chapin

James Chapin

Age - 77

November 8, 2023

Dr. James William Chapin, March 21, 1946 - November 6, 2023, was born in Omaha, Nebraska to James and Marguerite Chapin and lived most of his life in Omaha but more recently resided in Sandestin, Florida, and, even more recently, Watercrest. He was an accomplished anesthesiologist; an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather; an avid golfer (bordering on "obsessive"); and a genuinely kind person. He will be missed. Dr. Chapin was raised in Omaha and attended Benson High School where he played basketball & trombone. From there he attended the University of Nebraska for both undergraduate and medical school. He went on to practice anesthesiology and teach at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for the rest of his career, doing important research in malignant hypothermia and helping institute and develop a liver transplant program at UNMC. He delighted patients, students, and staff alike with his trademark humor and good nature. Jim Chapin loved golf from his caddying days in high school and spent much of his free time on the course at the Omaha Country Club, at courses around the world from Hawaii to Scotland to alligator-infested fairways in Mexico, and eventually at Burnt Pine in Sandestin. His study was filled with stacks of notes to himself about how to improve his game, and even when not playing, he relished a walk around a golf course, keeping a sharp eye out for errant golf balls. He kept up this walking to the end, content to roam the halls at Watercrest. Dad was a devoted husband, married for a lifetime to Phyllis; together they raised two children, traveled the world, and always cherished their time together. Even in the throes of late-stage Alzheimer's, when Dad had lost much, he always knew and fervently loved Mom - and he particularly loved to dance with her and hold her hand. Dad was always caring and supportive as a father, quick to share a (sometimes inappropriate) joke from the operating room at the family dinner table or provide extremely detailed explanations of medical topics, always eager to play a round of golf or watch a Nebraska football game with his boys. Grandpa/Pop-Pop loved his sons and their families and delighted in his four grandchildren, laughing, and joking with them at the zoo and golf course in Omaha, on the beach in Sandestin or at Disney parks. He was always game for a card game or a Pixar movie, and he was ever ready with a pun. We all giggled at his mischievous smile, widened eyes and "who, me?" feigned innocence. Doc was one of the first residents at Watercrest, where he found a wonderful community (which he called his "guys"); a caring, thoughtful staff; and a comfortable, safe environment in which to walk, and laugh, and dance, and occasionally abscond with a cup of pudding (he was just a little ornery to the end). Dr. Chapin/Jim/Dad/Grandpa/Pop-Pop/Doc will be missed for what he did but even more who he was every day: a kind, gentle, positive person who brought joy to those around him. He is survived by Phyllis Chapin (nee Nyberg), his wife of 54 years; his sons and their families: John, Wendy, Bailey, and Quinn; Andrew, Tori, Adele, and Ema; his cousins Charlie and Bill Chapin; and many more for whom he truly made a difference. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Dr. James William Chapin, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.Show more

Myron Tassin Sr

Myron Tassin Sr

Age - 90

October 24, 2023

Myron Jude Tassin, Sr. , age 90, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, died in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida October 18th, 2023, where he'd lived with his wife of 70 years, Shirley Hill Tassin. He was born in Long Bridge, Louisiana, in 1933 to Pliny Tassin and Emma Ducote Tassin. Myron helped work their cotton farm with his siblings while attending Cottonport schools. Though Cajun/Creole French was his first language, Myron excelled in English and headed for the "big city"--Baton Rouge--to obtain a Journalism degree at Louisiana State University where he was named their "outstanding male graduate". Myron met his future wife and lifelong love, Shirley Anne Hill, then a St. Joseph's Academy student, during his time at LSU. Myron served in the National Guard Reserves alongside close friends, old and new. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings: Joe, Helen, Bobby, Mary Anne and Sidney. Myron is survived by his wife, Shirley, children Myron, Jr. (Mike), Tim and wife Debbie, Jay and partner Brent, and Anne Tassin Winjum and husband Brent, fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Most of that group and their spouses last gathered in Miramar Beach to celebrate Shirley and Myron in February of 2023. Shirley and Myron were thrilled to find one another and, with Baton Rouge's Bishop Borders' help, convinced their parents to permit their wedding at ages 20 and 18. They were thereafter the closest of couples. Myron took jobs in public relations before establishing a Baton Rouge firm of his own. He later became an author and publisher of historical and biographical books, with Shirley as his research aide. Myron and Shirley also invested in and improved land, homes and cabins, which they enjoyed in adventures across Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado and the Florida Panhandle. They were always a team and, as loving, devoted parents, shared adventures in those states with their many progeny and friends. Myron was a devout and generous Catholic, singing in church choirs with Shirley, teaching catechism to public school students, and bringing religion home to family and friends by including befriended priests in gatherings, and driving parish nuns to engagements in New Orleans while commuting there for work. He never tired of making new friends from all walks of life, and helping those in need, some with a dental charity he created. Lifelong friendship and adventure were broad themes in Myron's life with Shirley, family and friends. Typical of Cajun men, Myron shared a love of food and cooking with Shirley. They enjoyed hosting their many friends for meals with fresh-caught seafood and hunted game. A bit of a ham during such gatherings, Myron typically sang, played the harmonica and teased with self-deprecatory humor. His high school nickname was "Hot"--a big name for a bayou boy with a big heart. He will be sorely missed, always loved and never forgotten. Here's to you, Hot!Celebration of Life Services will be held at a later date. To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Myron Jude Tassin, Sr, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.Show more
