Janet Mattes

Janet Mattes

Age - 90

December 9, 2023

Just before dawn on Tuesday December 5, 2023, God sent a special angel to Fairview Manor to guide Janet Edith Mattes home to her heavenly reward. Born August 6, 1933, at home in a little house on West 30th St, she was the second of four daughters of Phillip and Delphine (Niebauer) Mattes. Two brothers, Phillip and James died in infancy and two sisters, Phyllis Mattes Leuschen and Evelyn Mattes Lewis survive to mourn the loss of our precious JEM. The family struggled during the years of the Great Depression and WWII, but with a strong faith in God and Christian values, and a belief in the importance of education and a strong work ethic- the parents guided and urged their daughters to "Be All That You Can Be"!Janes went to Sacred Heart Catholic school for 8 years, then went to Academy High School, graduating in 1951. Her first job was at the Erie School District's main office. Having always had an interest in art, she attended evening classes in landscaping and portraiture taught by the well-known artist Joseph Plavcan. She then transferred to a ten-month position at Perry Elementary School which enabled her to pursue art education classes at Edinboro State College during the summers. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education in 1963 at the age of 30. She moved to Brocton, NY. Where she taught children and adults at the Central School for 4 years. She then relocated to Buffalo, New York and received her graduate degree in Art Education from Buffalo State College. She enjoyed being an art teacher at the Kenmore, Town of Tonawanda School District for 24 years. She made many friends because of her varied interests and traveled all over the United States and overseas with groups of people that were like minded. In the millennial years of 2000, she went to the Holy Land which she considered the most wonderful experience of her life. She researched and designed stained glass windows for churches and homes and attended many workshops at Omega in art and music, yoga postures, Tai Chi/Chi Kung movements and meditation, all of which influenced her artwork. Because of her parents failing health, Janet took an early retirement and moved back to Erie. She bought their little house on West 30th St. and rejoined Sacred Heart Church and reconnected with old friends and neighbors. For 10 years, she taught a Tai Chi/Chi Kung movement meditation class at the Mercy Center on Aging and joined their choral group and line dancing classes. When the Benedictines opened the Neighborhood Art house in 1995, she taught there for 15 years. She participated in PIAA exhibits and Panaroma. At the Independent Council on Aging Senior Art exhibits in the spring, her entries often received ribbon awards including one judged "Best of Show. " In 1998 she worried about what would happen to her many and varied works of art, so her family held a "Celebrate Art Show" where she gave away over 70 works of art. That was the kind, loving, caring, gentle person that Janet was. From the time Janet moved back to Erie, she and her sister Evelyn did everything together. They helped each other with housework, went to concerts, parades, church services, weddings and funerals, children's birthday parties, anniversary, and graduation parties, visited relatives, and oh! What fun they had shopping for the "perfect gift" to brighten someone's day. Janet celebrated her milestone 90th birthday. She fell several times, the last fall on November 1st she broke her leg and so went to Fairview Manor a skilled nursing facility where she was well taken care of and died in peace after a life well lived. Important people in her life were her sisters, Phyllis and Evelyn, her nephew and God-son Dana Lewis Jr. and his wife Karen, their daughter Bethany Dunlap, husband Jonathan and cute girls Emily (age 6) and Kayla Rose (age 1 1/2), Phyllis's sons Robert Leuschen and his son Chase, John Leuschen and his family Caitlin, Jacob & Heather. Their children, Emmet, Sebastian, and Myles. Janet's special cousins, Kim Volkman and Rita Niebauer and their families, and Janet's special longtime friends, Judie Ward and Alona Redden. Thanks to the wonderful people at Fairview Manor (especially nurse Melissa) and to Janet's attorneys, Rick and Nick Filippi who are helping us with the legal matters. Amen! Rest in Peace Janet!Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St. , Tuesday from 3 until 7 p. m. and on Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, 7100 West Ridge Road from 9 a. m. until time of the funeral mass at 10 a. m. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.Show more

Romaine Hanson

Age - 79

November 30, 2023

Romaine A. Hanson, age 79, of Erie, was surrounded by her loving family before she was peacefully escorted by angels to the Gates of Heaven on November 28, 2023 where she was joyfully reunited with those who passed before her. Romaine was born in Dubois Pa. , on October 31, 1944, a daughter of the late Rome and Anna (Abramovich) Mabie. Until her retirement, Romaine had been a nurse for many years providing that same loving care and comfort that she bestowed on her own precious ones with her most valuable accomplishment being her dedication in raising her family. If you had the privilege of deeply knowing Romaine, also known as Rhoda, Boo, Mermaid, Mama or Nunga then you know she was never further than a phone call away. She was strong, selfless and the most loving woman, with an oversized heart who purposefully lived every moment for her family and friends. Anyone who met or knew her, could feel the love she had for each individual family member because she was always more than willing to brag about them. To both Romaine's immediate and extended family members, she was the "Prayer Broker", the one to call when prayers or help were needed and she could always be counted on arriving without hesitation, no matter the time of day or night. She enjoyed several hobbies over the years, ceramics, playing bingo, reading, crocheting, cross stitch, and watching Law and Order. But what she truly enjoyed most was a cigarette, a cold cup of coffee, a "piece" of cake and warm conversations with those she cherished, often until the sun was about to rise. Romaine is survived by her four, loving daughters, Cathi Beemus (Fred) of Warren, Pa. , Chrisi Valerio (Doug) of Erie, Pa. , Kim Buell (Shelby) of Medina, Ohio, and Carolyn Selby ( preceded in death by her husband Charles) of Erie, Pa. , Eleven grandchildren, Freddie Beemus, DJ Valerio (Bri), Joey Valerio, Josh Valerio (Bree), Ellen Valerio, Tyler Buell (Katie), Austin Buell, Brendyn Buell, Alex Miller (Chuck), Chelsee Selby, Meeah Selby, several great-grandchildren, sister, Colleen Foltyn (Jack) and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Billy, Reggie, Bubs, Mickey, and Chuck Mabie along with three sisters, Geri Yount, Becky Hoff and Evelyn Kirkwood.
