Robert Cabral of Whitman passed away on September 29, 2023 at the age of 85. Robert was Raised and educated in Dighton and New Bedford. After his schooling he worked with his uncles delivering milk before joining the Navy. He served his country proudly and earned medals for "conduct, expert shooting and marksman". He met his wife Patricia while on leave and they got married shortly after. He was injured while on duty. Once his military service was concluded he returned home and worked tirelessly to support his family working in many different fields before starting "Cabbie Taxi" (the family cab) taxi/livery service based in Whitman. He enjoyed talking/joking with all the patrons he serviced while bringing them to their destination. Robert had many hobbies and talents. He enjoyed watching western films, wrestling and all animals. He was a mechanic and enjoyed working on anything with an engine. In his later years he gave back to the to the community by helping deliver meals on wheels in Whitman for several years along with helping with cleaning chores @ the Whitman Fire Department. He spent the last year and a half at the V. A. Hospital. Where he was cared for by many amazing caregivers who joined in his effort to joke/tease even do a little jig bringing a laugh or smile to himself and the staff. Robert will be sorely missed by anyone who knew him. Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia Ann Cabral (Chapman). He was the devoted husband to his wife. A strict/caring father of 5. Patricia Ann Anderson of Brockton, Mary Louise Stephens and her husband Walter of Abington, Robert F. Cabral of Whitman and his late significant other Donna Louise Giannetti of 20 years, and Geraldine Cabral Taylor and her husband Wayne of Norton. Robert also leaves behind his grandchildren Trevor N. Taylor and Shianne L. Taylor. He was predeceased by his son Robert Junior and beautiful grandchildren Tiffany May Joslyn and Derrick Thomas Joslyn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation in Roberts memory on Wednesday October 11, 2023 from 5-8PM in the MacKinnon Funeral Home (760 Washington St. Whitman). A funeral service will take place the following morning Thursday, October 12, 2023 in the funeral home at 10:30AM. Burial will immediately follow at the Knollwood Cemetery in Canton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Roberts memory to the MSPCA or the Disabled American Veterans.

Mary Alice Kirby, the wife of the late Senator Edward (Ned) Kirby passed away on November 28, 2023. She was born in Canton, Ohio in 1931, the daughter of Edward and Helen Mraz. She was a loving mother and is survived by her three children: Matthew Paul; Jane Frances de Chantal and her husband, Fares Zaki, and Thomas More and his wife, Ruthann Mackey Kirby. She was the proud grandmother of Liam Kirby, the son of Channette and Matthew Kirby, and the husband of Allie Kirby; Edward Zaki, married to Ticiana Temperini; Sebastian Zaki married to Jaimie Dougherty Zaki; Phillip Zaki; Christina Zaki; Max Kirby; and Susannah Kirby. She was blessed with nine great grandchildren: Royce, Selma, Herschel, Aiden, Camden, Amelia, Kolbe, Cecilia, and Moira. She graduated from the Marquette College of Journalism in 1953 and started work as the Advertising Manager of the W. T. Grant Stores in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later, in the fall of 1954 she joined the staff of "The Catholic Standard," the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington, D. C. She loved to recall the very snowy day at the bus stop in Washington when a black limousine stopped to offer stranded commuters a ride; the back window rolled down and the face of Vice President Nixon appeared. "Can I give you a ride to work? I'm going as far as the Capitol. " Chatting side by side, Nixon was very interested in Catholic current events. In 1957 she married US Army First Lieutenant Edward Kirby of Whitman, MA, in Washington, D. C. They spent the next 59 years in marriage, living in Whitman, where she joined him in his elected County and State work and supported him throughout his professional career on judicial, Pro-Life, and rail transportation issues. She was an active parishioner at the Church of the Holy Ghost in Whitman. In 1997, she edited "A Centennial View," a history of the parish which included a review of the events, people, and activities of the parish over the century since its founding, as well as a directory of all of the parish members. She also cherished her service as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and her teaching in Religious Education classes. She was the first woman to serve on the Massasoit Community College Board in 1974. She also served on Boards at Sacred Heart School in Kingston and the Plymouth Philharmonic. With the sponsorship of the late realtor Jack Conway, she planned and carried out the first Fourth of July Concert at Plymouth Harbor, near Plymouth Rock, presented with the Philharmonic orchestra, booming cannons and fireworks. In Whitman she served two terms on the Cultural Council, the sponsor of summer park concerts, a "Shakespeare in the Park concert," school field trips, and library events. Grants go to local artists and art groups are given supplies. With family and friends, she enjoyed many holidays and weekends at "Kirby Cabin," a small camp by a trout stream in the Green Mountain National Forest in Arlington, Vermont. Relatives and friends came for visits and vacations, enjoying picnics on the rocks by the river, and all of the special charm and personality of Vermont and its mountains. She enjoyed painting with watercolors and playing the piano. At Christmas she baked springerle cookies with her mother's antique wooden moulds, many other German favorites as well. The Comice pear tree in her front yard brought a yearly supply of pear jam to pass around to family and friends. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation on Friday, December 8, 2023 from 5-8PM in the MacKinnon Funeral Home (760 Washington St. Whitman). A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 930AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. She will be buried in St. James Cemetery with a monument graced with a bronze plate depicting the Holy Family, created by her son Matthew.Show more

Richard Douglas Rich 86, son of Clinton H and Anna Lou Hayner, passed away at his home in Whitman, MA on November 10, 2023, after a battle with cancer. Dick was born in Chicago, IL November 30, 1936. At age 9, his family moved to Mexico City where he stayed until he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, earning a degree in chemical engineering. He completed his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Maryland while working at the US Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Dick and Karen were long-time residents of Avon, CT when he worked for the Loctite Corporation. Dick served as president of the Avon Library Board and on the building committee for the new Avon Free Public Library. He was a supporter of credit unions, a fan of Bridge, Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit. One life-long interest was genealogy and he was past president of the Rich Family Association. Family history was fun for him- doing research in libraries, then online and finally finding the missing piece of his family's puzzle. He connected with distant family and helped others but his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren. To family, he was Uncle Ricky, to others he was Rick, to college friends and work colleagues he was Dick and to all he was Richard. He wasn't fussy, but was a friend to all. Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Karen Lloyd Rich, his son Andrew L of Midland, MI, four grandpeople , Joshua L Erde (Elise Bare) of Los Angeles CA, Rachel Erde of Sydney, Australia, Ellora and Nikhil Rich of Hanover, MA and great granddaughter Ada M. Erde, his sister Edith Dungan of Sarasota, FL as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers E. Robert Rich and Donald C Rich and sister Patricia Shea Jennings. Marjorie "Margie" Stewart of Whitman passed away on October 17, 2023 at the age of 93. Margie was born, raised and educated in Quincy and attended Quincy public schools. Margie married Robert Stewart and the two settled down and started a family. She was a homemaker until their children were old enough and then Margie began working at Alpine Press as a bookbinder and worked there for many years. Margie was a talented woman. She would crochet, bake and care for her houseplants. She loved reading detective magazines, enjoyed watching Family Feud, old westerns on ME tv and collected anything and everything especially all the beanie babies during the height of the craze. She answered to many names, Ma, Mom, Nana, Big Nana or the Hobbit. She will be sorely missed be all. Margie was the daughter of James and Mildred Guppy. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Robert A. Stewart. She was the devoted mother of Linda Leone and her husband John (deceased) of Ft. Myers, FL, Debra Richard and her husband David of Lynn, Robert Stewart and his wife Sue of Brockton, Judy Stewart-Gagnon and her husband Lee of S. Sutton NH, Bonnie Fleming and her husband Greg of Whitman and was predeceased by her first born son whom died in infancy, daughter Barbara Brown and great grandson Jordan. She was the loving sister of Dorothy Tener of Weymouth and predeceased by her brothers Larry, Robert, Russell, Richard and Donald. Margie also leaves behind her many grandchildren and great grandchildren in MA, NH, VA, SC and RI. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Mass for Margie on Tuesday October 24, 2023 at 10:30AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. A graveside service will follow the Mass at the Braintree Cemetery on Plain St in Braintree celebration of life will follow. in Lieu of flowers donations may be made in Margie's memory to St. Jude Children's Hospital.Show more
