Bob McDonald

Bob McDonald of Belpre peacefully passed into eternity February 19, 2024 at the age of 99. He was born in Vienna, WV to Dennis McDonald and Laura (Richards) McDonald. Bob lived his married life in Belpre with his wife Louise celebrating over 75 years of marriage.He spent his married years as the owner of Bob’s Barber Shop, while serving his community in many ways. He often made home visits to those who could no longer come to the shop for a haircut. He was a boy scout leader, president of the P.T.A. and member of the band boosters. During his tenure as a city councilman, the city pool was built and the city building was upgraded by the purchase and move to Main/Washington Blvd. He loved being “Uncle Sam” in the 4th of July parades. He also was a member of the Belpre Area Veterans.Bob served in the Navy during WW II on the USS Murray (DD-576) as a carpenter, pipefitter, and barber as well as manning the guns on deck during battle. During a battle which occurred the night before his 18th birthday, he promised God that if he could see his birthday he would serve Him all his days. Bob kept that promise and served and helped anyone who needed it. If he met a stranger he would immediately introduce himself. He saw each encounter as an adventure and opportunity to help someone. He also served in several of the area Churches of Christ as song leader, deacon, and elder.He was a craftsman who built two family homes in Belpre and made utility trailers, the USS Murry’s wheel house for a Navy reunion, pens, bowls, violins, and many clocks. Most all these items he gave as gifts. He later earned his pilot’s license, purchased a plane and took many friends on trips around the area. Some of these friends later became pilots themselves. He also played the violin and the harmonica. He had a store of music memorized that he could retrieve easily.Robert was preceded in death by his wife Louise. He is survived by his son Robert W. McDonald (Diane) of Nelsonville, and daughter Janet Chambers (Robert) of Albuquerque. grandchildren Ashley Guerra (Keith), Ivy Baca (Ruben) and great-grandchildren Cayden and Emma Guerra and Grayson and Teagan Baca all of Albuquerque.Visitation will be from 11am-1pm Friday February 23, 2024, at the Leavitt Funeral Home Belpre. Military honors will begin at 1pm provided by Marietta American Legion Post 64 and VFW Post 5108. Graveside services will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Belpre Area Veterans, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the American Diabetes Association.

John Nathaniel Hefner

John Nathaniel Hefner, 83, was absent from the body and face to face with the Lord on February 8, 2024, at his residence in Belpre, Ohio. He was born September 25, 1940, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Wilbert Nathaniel and Frances Louise Held Hefner.John served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Atka Icebreaker. He and his shipmates shared an unbreakable bond that was recalled many times during Atka ship reunions throughout the later years. He was a member of the former Belpre American Legion Post 495 and later Belpre Area Veterans and American Legion Post 15 in Parkersburg. He was also a member of Belpre Masonic Lodge #609.John was a member of Berachah Church in Houston, TX for over 35 years, studying Bible Doctrine regularly to understand the plan and will of God for his life to grow spiritually.After his time in the Navy, he attended WVU in Morgantown and then pursued a career in engineering working for IBM in the tri-state area and later for Control Data in Los Angeles maintaining major computer mainframe installations. In the 80’s he and other former IBM engineers formed a company to maintain the mainframe computers at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. When he returned to Ohio, he owned and operated Ohmega Computer Services, Inc. maintaining several large mainframe computer installations in Ohio and West Virginia. After retiring he worked as a security officer at the federal building in Parkersburg for a few years and after that, not yet ready to stop working, he worked for the Oxbow Golf Course in Belpre.John loved playing golf, tennis, running, and biking and was a 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do under Grand Master Sok Ho Kang. At one point he taught a class for seniors like himself who were interested in learning martialArts. He had an incredible ability of engaging with people with his blue eyes and infectious smile even if he just met them. He did not know a stranger.John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Debbie Brownrigg Hefner who was by his side when we want to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Daughter Sharri Hefner of Santa Monica, CA, grandchildren Sydney and AJ Shaffer; son John Michael Hefner (Michelle) of Birmingham, AL, grandchildren Harrison and Marin Hefner; and son Kristopher Nathaniel Hefner of Panama City Beach, FL, grandchildren Jade, Ethan, and Madison Hefner. John had 12 brothers and sisters, 4 preceded him in death: William Nathaniel Hefner, Martha Louise Chambers, Mary Jo Benjamin, and Cynthia Kay Hefner. Surviving siblings Judith Ann Chichester, Metta Melissa Cooke, Stanley Jack Hefner, Linda Kathleen Hefner, Deborah Jean Fischer, Dwight David Hefner, Stephen Joel Hefner, and Susan Joan Snyder with whom he shared a birthday and dozens of nieces and nephews. And of course, his faithful friend and companion, his Maltese poodle Jojo.The family would like to thank the staff at Belpre Landing for their wonderful care, encouragement, and support during his extended stays there. The staff there became like family to us. They also want to recognize Amedisys Hospice, especially Brooke and Tracey for the tender love and care provided during his final weeks at home. Debbie would like to personally thank Aunt Evie for all her help during Johns extended hospital stays, care giver Chris with a C, and special friend Teresa who stepped in tirelessly helping so much with Johns in home care. David Leroy Knepshield, 70, took his final breath on earth and his first breath in Heaven on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. He was born in Connellsville, PA, on August 28, 1953 to David Clyde and Dorothy Martin Knepshield. He graduated from Frazier High School in Perryopolis, PA in 1972 and from Vale Technical Institute, inBlairsville, PA in 1974, with an associates degree in automotive body repair. He worked at Union Insulating Co. in Parkersburg, WV for 17 years and at InternationalConverter in Belpre, OH for 17 years. After both plants closed, he worked many part-time jobs at local businesses and was a handyman for many people in the mid- Ohio Valley. The last 10 years, he worked at Leavitt's Funeral Home in Belpre. Atthe age of ten, he asked Jesus Christ to be his Savior and stayed faithful in church until his death as an usher, a deacon, a bus worker, and a sound booth technician.Survivors include Carol, the love of his life for 52 years, his 5 children and spouses, Jerry and Misty Kennedy, Goodrich, MI, Jeremy and Kim Knepshield, Mansfield, OH, Cory and Kelli Knepshield, Olive Branch, MS, Dave and Holly Armstrong, Davison, MI, and Trent and Shelley Yoho, Little Hocking, OH. He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren, Brittany (Kyle), Jerry (Esther), Justin, Trevor, Colton (Madi), Heidi, Ashlynn, Garrett, Zachary (Abigail), Caleb, Daniel, Andrew, Sydney, Gage, Hudson, Easton, Brystal, his first great grandchild to be born in June, and his beloved Maltipoo, Bella. He will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather and a quiet Godly man with integrity, work ethics, and tenacity who taught us all how to live and, more importantly, how to die.Visitation will be Monday, February 12, 2024, from 6-8 pm at Leavitt Funeral Home, 801 Victor Street, Belpre OH 45714. The funeral service will be held at Gospel Baptist Church, 29541 East Belpre Pike, Coolville, OH 45723, on Tuesday, February 13, at 11 am with a viewing starting at 10 am. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery in Belpre, OH.

Margret (Maggie) A. Newberry, 73 of Belpre, Ohio went peacefully to be with the Lord on February 3, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born on August 4, 1950 the daughter of the late William Jennings and Jacqueline Flo Gibson.In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her paternal grandparents, Luke and Katie Gibson, and maternal grandparents, Cyril, and Rena Peril Dye. Maggie was self-employed and co-owner of Ren-dor Bowling Lanes until she retired in 2007. Maggie was an avid bowler and enjoyed her trips and time with all her friends she bowled with. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was strong in her faith and believed she would join her parents in heaven. She loved spending her time with her family and loved being a grandmother. Her love and presence in our lives will be missed.Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Rachel (Brian) Tibbs of Marietta, Ohio, Brent Radabaugh of Belpre, Ohio, grandchildren, Siera Radabaugh (Theus), Cody Wittekind, Caden Lawson, Tiana (Kenneth) Rockhold, Julie Tibbs (Doug), Keith Tibbs. Also, five great grandchildren, Danae Tibbs, Liam Radabaugh, Gab Rockhold, Shy Burkhammer, Cashes Alexander. Her sisters, Cathy (Gary) Plumer, Cheryl (Steve) McCullough and several nieces and nephews, Tracy Machado, Elizabeth Jenkins, Darcy Selario, Chad, Curt, Hayden, Logan and Jackson Plummer, Brayden McCulough, Levi Adkins, also Tom Newberry and a host of friends and family.The family would like to thank the nurses and aides from hospice for taking great care of our mother over the last year.In honor of Maggie's request there will be no service and her remains will be cremated.There will be a Celebration of her life held at a later date.Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was retired from Dupont and enjoyed golfing, hanging out with friends, drinking beer, playing cards, and just having a good time. Sherry leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving wife, Connie Carpenter and their fur baby, Lily; and one sister, Becky Corbitt. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her two brothers, John and Bobby. Sherry selflessly contributed to the WVU Anatomical Donation program. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, guns, going to church, and hanging out with his friends. He loved to spend time with his wife.He is survived by his wife Lita Diana (Coleman) Simms; daughter Clarissa Dianne Simms of Lewistown, PA; grandson Jackson Steven Simms of Lewistown; two brothers Albert Simms (Anita) of Findley, OH and Warren Simms (Melissa) of Lubeck, WV; two sisters Paula Parker of Princeton, WV and Mary Tackett (Anthony) of Mobile, AL; mother-in-law Diana Jean Staats of Murraysville, WV; four sisters-in-law Shannon Perdue (Dwayne) of Huntington, WV, Shelly Dale (Brian) of Murraysville, WV, Tina Akers (Steve) of Ravenswood, WV, and Angela Graham (Mike) of Ravenswood; aunt Belva Fisher of Ravenswood, WV; and many nieces and nephews.Services will be Monday 11:00 AM at 14th Avenue Gospel Mission with Pastor Tim Burch officiating. Vernola Chambers AugensteinVernola May (Chambers) Augenstein, 90, of Belpre passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2024, following a brief illness.Vernola was born April 4, 1933, in Little Hocking, OH, to the late Harry Raymond and Ivy Beatrice (Smith) Chambers. She graduated from Belpre High School in 1951 and worked several years in secretarial and bookkeeping roles. She earned her associate’s degree in accounting from Washington Technical College in 1985. Known for her warm smile and deep faith, Vernola shared her talents with her church family. She served as organist and music director at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Belpre/Little Hocking for more than 50 years. Recently, she was cantor and choir member at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Parkersburg, WV.Vernola is survived by son George Augenstein of Belpre; daughter Angela (Mark) Ginty of Cincinnati, OH; daughter Kathy (Bryan) Weiss of Bargersville, IN; grandsons Connor Ginty and Ethan Ginty of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughters Haylee (Dave) Cadigan of Bargersville, IN, and Allyson (Eric) Fritchley of Pittsboro, IN; great-grandson Joseph Cadigan; brother-in-law David (Diana) Augenstein of Parkersburg, WV; and 10 nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Augenstein; her three older brothers Wayne, Bruce, and Claire Chambers; two nephews and two nieces.Visitation is 9:30-11 a.m. (Rosary at 10:40 a.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 27, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 5080 School House Rd., Little Hocking, OH. Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. with Fr. David Huffman officiating.
