White, Sr. "Retired Captain of Waterbury Police Department"Richard J "Dick" White, Sr. , passed away peacefully on May 9, 2023 under the compassionate care of VITAS Inpatient Unit at St. Mary's Hospital. He was married to the love of his life for sixty-one years, the late Mary (Salcito) White. Dick was born in Waterbury on August 24,1935 son of the late Donald and Iene (Trainor) White. He was educated at Saint Mary Grammar School, Wilby High School, and the University of New Haven. He served proudly in the Naval Reserves. Richard was employed by the Waterbury Police Department, rose to the ranks of Captain, and ended his 38-year career in the role of Acting Deputy Superintendent. He was dedicated to helping and protecting the people of the city he loved and made many lifelong friends through his work. He knew the city well and offered limitless information on its people, places and events. "Let me tell you a story. . . . . . ", he would say. He also taught stained glass classes, and created many lovely lamps, windows, and colorful ornaments that adorned the homes of customers, family and friends. He was active in the Odd Fellows Lodge #89, Naugatuck Polish Falcons Nest #65, and held leadership positions in the Waterbury Exchange Club, Elks #265, and Knights of Columbus, working tirelessly to raise funds for those in need. He was a member of the Mattatuck Drum Band since 1994, and enjoyed marching in events throughout New England. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Quinnipiac Game Association. He could be found on the East Mountain Golf Course on Wednesday mornings, and sitting in front of the television or in his season ticket seats whenever UConn basketball games were played. He took great pleasure in a cold Ballantine ale and any meal that was cooked by his wife! Richard was happiest surrounded by the large, loving family he and Mary created. They hosted many holiday celebrations, wonderful backyard cookouts and pool parties, and family vacations up and down the east coast, but especially to Cape Cod. He delighted in giving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren rides in his boat around Bantam Lake, and never tired of telling stories to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. Richard is survived by seven children: Bobbi Cremins (Jack), Suzanne Grella (Jerry), Rosemary Carlson (George), Richard White Jr. (Michele), Michael White (Mara), Elizabeth Schultz (Jim), and Christopher White. He enjoyed his Monday night dinners with his grandchildren: Katie Damiano (John), Sean Cremins, Karla Grella (Fred), Melissa Volpe (Mark), Jerry Michael Grella, Kathleen Labonte (Philip), Peyton Schultz (Jeremiah), Samantha Schultz (Austin) and James Schultz, Rachel White, Marissa White and Cory White. He was blessed with great grandchildren: Sean John, Skyla, Mason, Johnny, Philly, Max, Sydney, Emery, and one more to arrive soon! Richard is also survived by one brother Bernard White (Angela). His surviving in-laws are Grace White, and Gene and Nancy Salcito. He was predeceased by his brother Donald White, brother-in-law Anthony Salcito, and great-granddaughter Juna Elise. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and various healthcare professionals who helped improve the quality of Richard's life over these past few years, especially Nurse Tracey, who took such tender care of him and made him smile! Arrangements: A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2023, 10:00 a. m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. Burial will be private and at a later date and time in Old Saint Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 8:00 a. m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
