September 12, 2023
Hagerstown, MD
On Friday, September 8th, 2023, Richard "Dick" Edward Todd passed away surrounded by his loving wife, Betty, his devoted son, Rich and his dedicated daughter-in-law, Tracy. For the past nine months Dick and Betty had lived with their son and daughter-in-law in Hedgesville WV. They previously lived for over 20 years on Buttercup Drive at South Point in Hagerstown, MD. Dick was born November 14th, 1935 in Bellevue, PA to Helen and Oren Todd. He was the youngest of three children. His brother, Lee Todd from Leetonia, OH; and sister SaraLou Berg from Oak Ridge, TN proceeded him in death. Dick married "the love of his life" Betty Anne Hildebrand on January 16th, 1956 in Beaver Falls, PA. Betty fondly referred to her husband as "a diamond in the rough" for his tough exterior and quiet intellect. Together in their 67 years of marriage, they raised three children- Shelly Malone (Middlesex, NC), Kelly Logsdon and her husband, Mark (Hagerstown, MD) and Richard Todd Jr. and his wife, Tracy. He also will be missed by his brother-in-law, Rich Hildebrand and wife, Elaine from New Brighton, PA and their three children Richy, Jeannie and Deana; and brother-in-law, Charles Hildebrand. His enjoyment came from his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pap". Jasen (Cindy) Logsdon, Ashley Logsdon Massey, Alice "Breanna" Malone (deceased), Jarett (Natalie) Logsdon, Azure (Raymond) Stubbs, Cole (Cari) Todd, Samantha (Blaine) Gibson, Dylon Todd and Breeana Crain. Dick and Betty are additionally blessed with 15 great grandchildren: Caroline, Gavin, Kennedy (KJ), Allison, Lars, Kamryn, Tristan, Kayson, Kamdyn, Lily, Silas, Sydney, Lilly, Buddy, MacKenzie (Baby Mack) and two bonus great grandchildren, Taylor and Hayden. A unique individual, Dick left an indelible memory on anyone whose life he touched. He was never short on words and shared his opinion to anyone who listened. His animated stories will last in our memories for a lifetime. He loved to shake his false teeth and scare his grandkids and great grandkids and any other child into laughter or tears. You never saw Dick not wearing blue jeans with a denim long sleeve shirt and white undershirt along with his notorious red or blue hanky. He was quite a character eager to help anyone who needed help, advice or a laugh. As a loving husband, hard working father, devoted Pap, proud G-Pap, and Pappy Dick, he enjoyed watching his grandkids and great grandkids in sports and activities. He volunteered countless hours and years at National Little League where he was Minor League president and mentor to many children. He was a skilled welder for Columbia Gas Company for 25 years. He also worked for several years at Dressel Welding Supply and Rich and Company Construction. His attention to detail and craftmanship was admired by many. He spent hours in his workshop manipulating metal or wood with precision and artistry, a reflection of his meticulous nature. He often reminded us of the saying he held dear, "the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing," to emphasize the importance of being attentive, efficient and purposeful with anything you create or a job you carry out. There wasn't anything he could not fix. In his 87 years, family was paramount, and he enjoyed sharing his wisdom, stories, opinions and love with them. Despite his rugged exterior, he was warm hearted and loved to make people smile. He had an adventurous spirit that led him to stories of racing Flathead Fords. He often shared his glory day stories from when he played football with a leather helmet for Leetonia High School in Leetonia, OH. Though he may be gone, his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. We will "Praise Pap and let's eat" at every family meal in memory of our husband, Dad, Pap, and G-Pap. The family wishes to personally thank Rich and Tracy Todd for their incredible devotion in caring for Dick while he and his wife, Betty lived at their home during Dick's illness. For nine months they never left his side and selflessly devoted their lives to ensure he was tended to and content. Their dedication allowed Dick to pass with dignity, comfort and constant loving attention. He left this life knowing he was loved and respected. We also would like to thank Ann and Garland Miller for their love and companionship that they shared with Dick and Betty during his final months in WV. Dick and Betty appreciated every visit from family and friends, the prayers and kind thoughts. A huge debt of gratitude and appreciation goes to Hospice of the Panhandle for their responsiveness, compassion and unwavering commitment to Dick's comfort and his desire to remain home. A "Celebration of Life" will be held on October 8, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made "In Memory of Richard Todd" to: Hospice of the Panhandle. This can be completed on-line at www. hospiceotp. org or postal mail to 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.
