December 28, 1948 to September 29, 2023 Richard (RIck) Stephen Sanford was born in Taft, CA to Richard G. and Lorraine W. Sanford (Pond). Rick attended Foothill High and graduated in 1966. After graduation he joined the US Army and was an Airborne Infantryman. He served 2 tours of Vietnam and was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, a Combat Infantry Badge and the Army Commendation Medal. After living in Taft and working for the US Postal service he and his family moved back to Bakersfield in 1975. He retired from the Postal service in 2004 and enjoyed spending his time at the family’s beloved Cabin 52 at Cedar Slope in Sequoia National forest. Rick was married to his love Darlene Sanford (Long) for 52 years and had a daughter Christine Sanford and a son Scott (Angela) Hacker and two granddaughters Alyssa and Madison Hacker. He also had a sister Gail (Sanford) Johnson and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and step mother Helen Sanford. Rick will be dearly missed by many friends and family, and especially by his grandchildren who always enjoyed being around their Pops. A viewing will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday October 15th at Kern River Family Mortuary at 1900 N. Chester, Bakersfield, CA 93308 Military Funeral services will be held for Rick on Monday October 16, 2023, 1:15 p. m. at Bakersfield National Veteran’s Memorial Park, 30338 E. Bear Mtn Blvd. , Arvin CA 93203 Afterwards a reception will be held at Senor Pepe’s Restaurant at 3:00 PM at 8450 Granite Falls, Bakersfield, CA 93312 In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Kern County Honor Flight.

Jerri Ann (Davis) Curtis April 17, 1951 - November 27, 2023 Jerri Ann (Davis) Curtis was born on April 17, 1951, in McCurtain, Oklahoma, the first of 4 children born to Patricia Ann Davis and Charles Doyle Davis. As a baby her family moved to California where she grew up on ranches in Shafter and Wasco. Jerri graduated from Tehachapi high school and got married in 1969. In her 15 years of marriage, she moved to Bakersfield and had two beautiful children. She attended Bakersfield College as a single mother to gain skills for a career. In 1985, while attending her sister's wedding she met Luke (Gene) Curtis and fell in love. She married Luke on March 16, 1986, and in 1988 had a beautiful baby girl. Jerri worked at the Kern County District Attorney's Office as the Administrative Coordinator for the Kern County Clerical Staff for 31 years before she retired at the age of 62. In 2000 she defeated breast cancer, then survived her second battle in 2014. In 2023 she began her 3rd battle, but the Lord decided to bring her home. She had been a member of the Fairfax Grange, volunteered with the Sherriff's Citizen Services Unit, was elected secretary of the Trail Blazers 4wheel drive club and an active member of the Bakersfield Woman's Club. Jerri enjoyed traveling, mostly to the beach and wherever she could go with a camper. She enjoyed knitting and sewing but most of all she loved her collection of dolls. Jerri was kind, smart, strong and inspirational to all that knew her. Jerri went to be with the Lord on November 27, 2023. She is survived by her husband Luke (Gene) Curtis and 3 children and their spouses: Klis Stowers (Amber), Kerri Terra (Jeff) and Amber Jackson (D. J. ), 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, as well as her 3 siblings and numerous cousins.Show more

"Obituary for Roberto P. Ozuna Robert P. Ozuna passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, November 6, 2023 at the age of 97. Robert, also known as Beto, or Roberto, by his family and friends, lived a long and fruitful life, mainly in Bakersfield, CA (from the late 1940s to 2022). Beto never knew a stranger and would make friends with anyone who had time to listen to his amazing and light-hearted stories of his traveling experiences across the United States in the 1940's. He could light up a room with his smile and those around him could always expect a solid hand on their back. He came into this world as the son of Theodoro and Trinidad Osuna on January 31, 1926, in Bellinger, Tx. He was the tenth of eleven children, of which he was the last surviving member of his family. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sofia Arismendez Ozuna, his son Robert Ozuna Jr. and Stanley Wara Saldana, his great grandchild. On January 27, 1952, Beto married Sofia Arismendez. They had five children: Robert Jr (Glenda), Elsa Ozuna-Richards (Kris), Sylvia Ozuna Jones (Chris), William Ozuna (Jane) and Cyndi Ozuna Bomar (Ken). Beto was blessed with ten grandchildren (Brandy Lozoya, Brent \u0026amp; Drew Saldana, Bill II \u0026amp; James Ozuna, Katrina \u0026amp; Christopher Jones, and Elizabeth, Katie and Teri Bomar) and 16 great-grandchildren. In his early life, he traveled and worked at various jobs. He later would settle and work in road construction in Bakersfield, Ca. Beto worked with Dicco Construction Company and Granite Construction after they purchased Dicco for 25 years and a member of the Local 220 for 73 years. He served as President of the Commite de Beneficia Sucursal #6 for several years. He was proud of his involvement in the Commite for all of the work towards providing scholarships and benefits to their members and youth. Beto's longevity can be attributed to his positivity and deep faith. He was a prayer warrior praying religiously every night for his family, church, community and national leaders. Beto stayed very active his entire life and loved his independence. He had great hobbies throughout the years, macrame, long walks, word puzzles, reading, eating Mexican food and traveling. Above all, he and his wife, Sofia loved to dance and were masters in the Balero dance style. After her death, he continued to dance and was always complimented for his grace across a dance floor. He was a great man, husband, father, grandparent and an awesome uncle to so many nieces and nephews--all of whom he loved dearly. We will miss you beyond words. In Memoriam: Steven James Mata It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Steven James Mata on November 27, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, CA. Born on December 24, 1958, in Delano, CA, to Winsloe Sistos Mata and Mary Louise Mata, Steven's life was marked by his commitment to family, music, and service. A proud graduate of Delano High School in 1977, Steven furthered his education at Bakersfield College, earning an associate degree in music for three decades, he dedicated his career to D. A. D. D as a transportation driver and musician, leaving an indelible mark on those he served. In 1985, Steven entered into matrimony with Debbie, sharing 33 years of blissful marriage. A devout member of the Catholic Church at St. Mary's in Delano, CA, Steven's passions extended to his love for music, particularly classic rock, The Beatles, and oldies. His musical journey began with the formation of his band in his youth, evolving into a recognized publisher on YouTube in his later years. Steven found joy in simple pleasures, including watching movies, basking in the sun, and cherishing moments with his family. His legacy lives on through his beloved spouse Debbie, children Stephanie, Dominic, Luke, Aaron, Bethany, and Blase, grandchildren Jayden, Zachariah, and Lucian, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Winsloe and Mary Lou, and siblings Robert and Patricia, Steven's memory will be honored at a funeral service on December 16, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, followed by burial at North Kern Cemetery District.
