Dateline: Holiday ShoresRichard "Merle" McKey, 77, of Edwardsville, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at his residence. He was born on September 17, 1945, in Alton, IL, the son of Cecil L. and Dorothy M. (Hiett) McKey. Merle married Alice Diane (Pierce) in Cottage Hills on August 14, 1965. She preceded him in death on May 5, 2005. Merle later married Janet Kay (Smith) in Destin, FL, on February 28, 2009. She survives. Merle worked at Illinois Bell as a lineman, then went to AT&T to work as a supervisor, finally moving on to Avaya as a manager, retiring from there in 2001. He was a member of Metro Community Church in Edwardsville, and was very strong in his faith. He is a lifetime member of the Splinter Creek Dirt Riders Club where he once served as the president. Merle enjoyed auto racing, fishing, camping, off-roading, tinkering, inventing many things, traveling, as well as doing research on many topics and writing. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren. Merle was full of life and was kind, gentle, wise, loving and had a great sense of humor. Along with his wife, Janet, he is survived by his children, Craig (Becky) McKey of Bethalto, and Denise (Chris) Carney of Moro; stepchildren, Jeff Napoli of Jenson Beach, FL, and Joe Napoli of Ballwin, MO; siblings, Dennis (Debbie) McKey of Branson, MO, Thelma (Steve) Kochan of Wood River, and Jimmy McKey of Bethalto; sixteen grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Perkhiser, Jacob Davis, Ryan Davis, Matthew (Tai) Carney, Morgan Carney, Ashlee Conner-McKey, Mady McKey, Grant McKey, Jessica Napoli, Justin Napoli, Emily Napoli, Jared Napoli, Kalista Napoli, Barret Napoli, Brittany Morris, and Taylor Fuchs; twelve great-grandchildren, Tucker, Savannah, Kaylen, Emmett, Enzo, Delyzuh, Naluh, Jayvone, Axel, Tyson, Jenson, and Stetson; and many nieces and nephews. Merle was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice; a brother, Harold Clark; a son, Deron McKey; and a grandson, Nathan Richard McKey. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 9:30 am until time of service at 11 am, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Brother Bob Battles will officiate. She was the pillar of her family, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who love her. Jean was born on July 5, 1930 ("a leftover firecracker"), in Alton, IL, to Ella (Meyer) and Edwin Buhs. She married Eldor Louis Bertels on July 22, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alton, the same church in which she was Baptized and confirmed. Their marriage was one that serves as an aspiration for everyone who knew them. Jean was an active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Dorsey during her adult life, teaching Sunday school for many years and singing in the choir until she was 70. Faith held a profound significance in her life, serving as the cornerstone upon which she lived her life and raised her family. Jean was an avid reader and journaler who spent many hours learning about American history, watching and attending movies, sharing stories of her life and family heritage, reminiscing over pictures (especially of vacations out West), listening to music, and teaching her grandchildren to play Kings on the Corner and Rummy Royal. Above all, some of her favorite moments were those spent with her family, and the feeling is mutual. Jean is survived by children Joan (Gary) Brown, Richard (Diana) Bertels, and Donna Oehler; sister Maxine (Paul) Sauerwein; brothers Larry (Sue) Buhs and Robert (Carol) Buhs; sister-in-law Lotus (Donald) Buhs; 12 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Eldor, son in law, James Oehler and brother Donald. Brother Hardesty

Brother Jack Hardesty, OFM, a dedicated member of the Franciscan Friars of the Sacred Heart, passed away at the age of 84 on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 9:19 am. Born on October 14, 1939, to Alfred and Mary in Neoga, Illinois, Brother Jack responded to a divine calling and, in 1957, embarked on the path to religious life within the Franciscan community. Brother Jack was a man ahead of his times, harboring a profound interest in computers, a passion that manifested throughout his life. His journey of service began as a business manager at Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary in Quincy, Illinois, followed by roles at Quincy University, Padua Franciscan High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, Illinois. In 1991, he assumed the position of Director of Computer Services at Mayslake Village, a large retirement village near Chicago. Later, in 1994, he transitioned to Quincy University's library, dedicating 14 years to their service. In 2008, Brother Jack embraced a new ministry, caring for elderly Franciscans at Saint Clare Villa in Alton, Illinois. When circumstances led to the closure of Saint Francis Villa due to the Covid pandemic, Jack and his fellow Franciscans relocated to Alton's Evergreen Place. It was during this time that Brother Jack gradually eased into retirement, his focus shifting to health care for the Friars and genealogy research. He devoted significant time to exploring his family history, discovering with great excitement some noble lineage among his ancestors. He is survived by his siblings, William "Bill" Hardesty (Karen), Mary Ann Herring, and Dorothy M. Harl; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings C. Leo Hardesty, James Hardesty, Florence Hardesty, and Rosemary Hardesty. A Friar of compassion, Brother Jack chose to lead a life of simplicity and dedicated himself to living out the Gospel. Gifted and diligent, he utilized his talents for the betterment of his community and the fulfillment of his calling. Raymonde Jackson

Raymonde (Monie) Francoise Henriette Germaine Lostetter Jackson, age 85, went home to be with Jesus at 12:30 a. m. on November 24, 2023, surrounded by family at home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Monie was born on January 10, 1938, daughter of Felix and Aimee (Paulmier) Lostetter, in Paris, France, under Nazi occupation, and knew nothing but war during the first 7 years of her life. When she was 15 years old, her family moved to Jerseyville, Illinois. On November 24, 1956, she married Donald Carl Jackson, Sr. They spent 65 years together before he preceded her in death on April 28, 2022. She learned about God in a church in Fidelity, Illinois, where they both accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Monie earned bachelor's and master's degrees from SIU-Edwardsville while raising three children. She taught French, Spanish and English for over 30 years at Roxana Junior High school. After retiring from teaching at Roxana, she also taught Spanish at Christian schools in the area. Monie's love for the Lord and for others resulted in her becoming a remarkable, compassionate and dedicated leader and minister of God. She became an ordained pastor with her own church, the Hiding Place, in Bethalto, Illinois. Later, she preached at churches in the area, and her husband, Don, had a music ministry. Monie wanted everyone to know Jesus and His love for us. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She never accepted money for her ministry except when churches provided funds to pay for French Bibles, which she took to Paris, France on two separate trips. Monie wrote a memoir about her life and Jesus' love for us, My Heart Yearns for You. Please contact a family member if you would like a digital copy. Monie will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by three children: Terrie Nagel (David), Donald Carl Jackson, Jr. , and Denise Jackson; grandchildren: Michelle Nagel-Guffey (Brandon), and David N. Nagel; and four great grandchildren: Gabrielle, Isabelle, Annabelle, and Noelle Guffey. She is also survived by two sisters, Nicole Finke and Ginette Sevier (Ron), and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Monie is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Carl Jackson Sr. , her son, Danny Wayne, her parents, Felix and Aimee Lostetter, her brother Andre, and her sister, Solange Brown. Monie also loved animals and always had a little dog in her arms. She is also survived by her loyal dog, Fillette, and her cat Precious. Monie will be forever remembered for her sweetness and her courageous, compassionate ministry and worshipful love for the Lord. She was born February 15, 1949 in Commerce, CO, the daughter of Donald and Laura (Collins) Smith. She married Curtis Rosser on February 23, 1967, and he preceded her in death on November 25, 1999. Carol worked as a billing specialist with Visiting Nurses Association. She enjoyed doting on her grandkids and great-grandkids. Carol will be remembered for her love of holidays. Her love of all animals came from her childhood growing up on a farm. She is survived by two children and a daughter-in-law, Crystal Chartrand of Bethalto, and Clint and Vanessa Rosser of Alton; two siblings, Larry and Norine Smith, and Marcie Litz; seven grandchildren, Matt, Samantha, Jeremy, Laura, Adam, Hayley, and Nolan; seven great-grandchildren, Charlie, Alex, Curtis, Aubrey, Nora, Wyatt, and Lucille; and many other relatives and friends. Dateline: Godfrey, IllinoisRichard Lowell Napp, 87, passed away at 11:52 am on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 31, 1936 in Alton, IL to Wilbur and Mildred (Tarrant) Napp. Richard married Judy Last on March 15, 1958 in England. They were married for 65 years; she was the love of his life. She survives. Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force and was selected as a recipient of Honor Flight to Washington DC where he was recognized for his service, sacrifice, and selflessness. He retired from Olin Corporation as a Foreman. Richard was a member of St Paul's Episcopal Church where he was actively involved and held many positions. He was an avid gardener. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by two daughters, of whom he was very proud: Carol (Olen) Witcher of Godfrey, IL, and Wendy (Dominic Dunnavant) Napp of Collinsville, IL; two granddaughters, Lindsay (Brett Wilburn) Witcher of East Alton, IL, and Chelsea (Nathan) Aud of East Alton; a grandson, Olen Andrew (Molly) Witcher of Godfrey, IL; six great-grandchildren fondly referred to him as "Grandpa GG": Noah, Charlie, Harper, Nicholas, Austin, and Taylor; along with many extended family members and good friends. Dateline: Golden EaglePauline A. Eschbach passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023. Pauline was born on April 20, 1943, to William and Mary Droege of Meppen, IL. She is survived by her husband Carl of 63 years; 5 children, Erna (Mike) Halemeyer, Mary (Jasen) Hoemmen, Jim (Acinda) Eschbach, Deborah (Lloyd) DeSherlia, Jerry (Michelle) Eschbach. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 14, great-grandchildren, with 2 more arriving soon. Also surviving are a brother Pat (Vera) Droege, sisters, Joan Bonner, Gerry (Bill) Schleeper, Rosemary (Gene) Sagez, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pauline worked at numerous jobs in her lifetime, the Brussel's Library and day care, a bakery, Wittmonds in the kitchen and serving meals, worked 13 years at old Calhoun Nursing Home, and 17 years as a certified nurse assistant at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton before retiring, and after retiring she prepared food and baked pies to serve lunches at auctions. Pauline enjoyed making meals for her family gatherings and making turtle soup with her family, all while enjoying the loves of her life, all the children. Holidays were very special to her and her family, she enjoyed being surrounded by her family. She will be sadly and forever missed by everyone. Pauline is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Martha, Bertha, and Mildred, brothers, Aloys, Wilfred, and little William. A funeral service and burial will be held at a later date. She was born on May 6, 1925, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the daughter of John P. and Ruby A. (Kenyon) Schwartz. She was formerly married on May 24, 1946, in Brisbane to Alfred P. Shook. He preceded her in death on September 21, 2003. Lillian managed the laundry department at The Barry Care Center Nursing Home in Staunton before her retirement iin 1989. She enjoyed working, gardening flowers, bird watching, sitting on her deck watching hummingbirds, being outdoors, taking walks, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Lillian is survived by her children, Lorraine (Jim) Ross of Moro, Larry (Joan Ketcham) Shook of Dorsey, and Dan (Patricia) Shook of Dorsey; a sister, Marjorie Kukulies of Australia; four grandchildren, Linette (Jim) Pipkin, Shane Ross, Danette Shook, and Sheri (Danny) Bone; ten great-grandchildren, Sydni (Jordan) Dellamano, Saige Gehrs, Baleigh Gehrs, Camryn Gehrs, Shane J. Jerome Klockenkemper

Jerry Klockenkemper, affectionately known as "Papa", lived a full and beautiful life. He passed peacefully in his home during the early morning hours of November 5, 2023. Jerry was born December 5, 1937, to Joseph and Emma Klockenkemper and was the youngest of nine children. A devout Catholic and Christian, he attended St. Mary's High School in Brussels, Illinos. He went to elementary school and junior high in his small village of Batchtown, Illinois. He enjoyed being an altar server, playing a lot of baseball, and exploring far and wide, while fishing and hunting with his brothers and childhood pals. He then went on to college at St. Ambrose University and later was accepted into the Naval Academy and progressed through the Naval Academy Officer Candidate School (OCS) -- he earned Business and Engineering degrees, as well as achieved the honor to serve his country in the Vietnam War as a high ranking Naval Officer. He began his career in the Chicago area, where he met my Mother, Virginia (Ginny) at the Great Lakes Officer's Club and the rest, shall we say, is history. They were always happy and madly in love and enjoyed an almost 60-year marriage. He worked as a manufacturing engineer and accomplished several important mechanical patents. He was a problem solver dedicated to analysis and finding resolutions. He was successful in every way and supported his wife Ginny, and children Rebecca and J. J. with whatever goals they set out to attain. Jerry was a kind, compassionate, hardworking, fun man who loved his life and family immensely and always had a smile on his face. He loved to play cards (Bridge and Gin Rummy), hunt, fish, play golf back in the day, engage as an avid college football and basketball fan, cheer on the Indianapolis Colts and the Indy 500, meet new friends, and ultimately he loved being with his family the most -- and he was a great dancer, with some serious "Fred Astaire" dance moves. He loved to dance at parties, weddings, and frequently at home!Jerry is survived by his beloved daughter Rebecca; his daughter-in-law Christen and dear Mike; his wonderful grandchildren: Adeline, Joseph, Emma, Mark, Anna, and Zoe; as well as his two brothers and sisters-in-law Paul (Joan) Klockenkemper, John (Eula Mae) Klockenkemper, Evelyn Kovacevich; sister-in-law Marilyn Klockenkemper and sister-in-law Mitzi Johnson. He is also survived by numerous dear friends, neighbors, cousins, nieces, and nephews that will all miss him terribly. Papa, we will miss you with all of our hearts. You were an amazing man! You were the person that was very much a rock in our family. You were the "go to" when life got tough, and always so happy to hear how life was going at any given time. Our hearts are broken, but we are forever grateful for your advice, your example as a husband and father and person. You were always kind and positive no matter what. Thank you for providing this beautiful life and we know we are better people because of you. We love you with all of our heart and soul, and it is so hard to say goodbye, but we know that you are safe with the Lord. Your grandchildren and all of us love you so much. He was born on March 4, 1952, in Alton, IL, the son of Lloyd W. and Ruby V. (Bridges) Phipps. Paul is a graduate of Civic Memorial High School and Ranken Technical College. He worked most of his life as a skilled ASE certified auto body technician. He worked in Glen Carbon at Kurt's Carstar before his retirement. He was a member of Forest Homes First Southern Baptist Church. Paul enjoyed auto body work and spent most of his free time in the garage. He also enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. Survivors include his children, Sandra Chvala of Staunton, Nicole Phipps of Wood River, and Natalie Forgy of Bethalto; a sister, Janet (Dennis) Newman of East Alton; and his grandchildren, Petra Nimmons, Madilyn Chvala, and Gabriel Forgy.
