Always together, and forever in our hearts, after 73 years of marriage Richard and Mary Highcock went to be with the Lord in Heaven only eight days apart. Mary Helen Highcock, 92, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, in their home surrounded by her family. Richard Harold Highcock, 94, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, in their home surrounded by his family. Mary was born Dec. 4, 1930, in Hammond, Ind. , the daughter of John and Helen (Schmal) Vogler. Richard was born Oct. 15, 1928, in Casner, Ill. , the son of Edwin and Pauline (Tohill) Highcock. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserves from 1947-1955. They lived happily in the home Richard built for Mary until their passing. Richard and Mary are survived by their children: Rick (Debbie) Highcock, of Beaufort, S. C. ; Sue (Clark) Morris, of Mt. Zion, IL. ; Linda (Kirk) Cravens, Mt. Zion, IL. ; John (Judy) Highcock, of Decatur, IL. ; and Julie (Patrick) Bridgman, of Rochester, Ind. ; grandchildren: Jennifer Clarke, Mark (Angie) Highcock, Kristi Hart, Ben (Bobbi) Morris, Brian Cravens, Bradley (Meg) Cravens, John (Jamie Schwendinger) Highcock II, Janarra (Tyler) Beals, Amanda Bridgman and Jeffrey Bridgman; great-grandchildren: Joe, Emily, Andrew, Morgan, Julianne, Alyssa, Gracie, Raine, Jonnie, Elizabeth, Anna, Reece, Bexton and Jillian and sister Pam(Ron) Woodhall. Their beloved dog, Millie. Richard and Mary were preceded in death by their parents; Mary's sister, Bev; Richard's siblings: Betty, Lucille, Ed and Jim; and one great-granddaughter, Lillie. The family would like to thank cousin, Myrna Kirchhoeffer, as well as family friends Debbie Janes and Wendy Devore for all of the help they gave to our Mom and Dad. A very special thank you also to Keely Owens, our hospice nurse, for the wonderful care she provided in their final days. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11a. m. with a visitation an hour before at St. James Catholic Church, Decatur. Inurnment will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery, Long Creek, IL. Janet R. Zellars 85, of Decatur, IL passed away at 3:32 p. m. , Friday, December 1, 2023, in St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur, IL. A memorial service to honor Janet's life will be held at 11:30 a. m. , Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a. m. until service time on Thursday morning December 14, 2023. Inurnment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur. Memorials may be made in Janet's memory to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Janet was born May 27, 1938, in Decatur, IL the daughter of Loren and Alice (Edwards) Goodpaster. She married William R. "Bill" Zellars on October 4, 1957. He preceded her in death on April 13, 2017. Janet spent her working career as a Bank Teller for Mt. Zion State Bank. She enjoyed serving her loyal bank customers. Janet was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved music and playing the piano and would also play at church for services. Janet's greatest joy was spending time with her family. Helen Anna (Riddle) Smith 94, of Decatur, IL went home to be with Jesus on December 3rd, 2023. She peacefully entered Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior. Helen was born on March 24, 1929, in Decatur, IL the daughter of Earl and Frances (Morris) Riddle. She married the love of her life, Arthur Elwood Smith on August 5, 1943. Their faithful and enduring love was celebrated by 76 years of marriage. Mom had a sweet, simple, and caring nature. She was known for her gentle, kind, and loving spirit. Helen's life was marked by her steadfast devotion to her Lord, her husband Art, and her four children: Art Jr. , Ann, Linda, and Ron. Mom had many trials in her life like all of us do. Her love and trust in the Lord gave her peace and strength to get through these many trials. The loss of two of her children (Art Jr. and Ann) was very hard on her but with God's help she continued on her life's journey with her "new normal. "She was very close to her brother, Red and she missed him very much after he passed away. She had a special place in her heart for her niece, Julie Turner and family. She also loved her son-in-law's Monte and David. Helen is survived by her daughter: Linda Riley (Monte) of Mt. Zion; son: Ronald Smith (Rhonda) of Stonington; nine grandchildren: Shellie, Angie, Ronnie, Terry, Joel, Laura, Anna, Ashley, and Nathan. She leaves several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Art on October 19, 2019; son: Art Jr. ; daughter Frances Ann Campbell; parents, brothers: Red, Don, and Leonard. It is very hard to say goodbye to such a lovely lady. You are my best friend and I Love you more than all the stars in the sky - Linda. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2012. Anna had spent her working career as a bookkeeper for many area businesses. She was affiliated with the 2nd Church of God Church. Anna enjoyed traveling, camping, attending auction sales, and antiquing. She was very proud of her Blackwell family heritage and best described as a very kind and sweet lady, willing to help anyone who had a need. She also in her later years enjoyed socializing with her friends at McDonald's on Pershing Road over a cup of coffee. His journey on this earth was marked by a passionate pursuit of excellence, dedication to martial arts, a profound love for God, and a remarkable commitment to the way of the warrior. At the young age of 18, Delfin set out on a transformative journey to Alaska in 1974, under the influential guidance of Clemmie Webster and Charles Scott. This pivotal decision laid the foundation for a life devoted to martial arts and the pursuit of knowledge. His dedication and disciplined approach led him to achieve the equivalent of a Doctorate in Philosophy in Martial Arts and life knowledge. Delfin not only practiced martial arts; he embraced the ethos of "Bushido" - The Way of the Warrior. His life was a testament to the principles of honor, integrity, and loyalty that define this ancient Japanese code. Through his actions, he embodied the virtues of courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, and loyalty, inspiring those around him to follow in his footsteps. Internationally Certified Instructor, Delfin Labrador, held prestigious titles, including 8th Dan Shudokan Karatedo, 6th Dan International Karate Assoc, 4th Dan Shindo Jinen Ryu Karate jutsu, 5th Dan Shihokarano Ryu Jujutsu, 3rd Dan Yoshinkan Aikido, and 2nd Dan Nakamura Ryu Battodo, among others. His dedication to classical Japanese Martial Arts extended to his role as the Shihan / Menkyo Ogasawara Ryu Kyujusu Internationally Certified Instructor. Delfin was a beacon of martial arts in Anchorage, Alaska, operating a Martial Arts Program at Spenard Rec Center. His passion for community martial arts programs was evident through his commitment to supporting and certifying instructors internationally. His martial arts journey took him across borders, earning him recognition not only internationally but specifically in Asia. Delfin was well-traveled, and his expertise was acknowledged on a global scale. His impact was not confined to the dojo; it resonated in the hearts of those he taught and inspired. Delfin is survived by his loving sister Lilia Y. (Fred) Coleman of Sacramento, California, and his brother Leland R. (Alisia) Labrador of Decatur, Illinois. He leaves behind nieces Lekel T. (Dwayne) Taylor, Ashley S. (Jeremy) Hunt, Paige A. Labrador, and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, great-nephews, and nieces. In addition to his family, Delfin's impact extended to his special friend and student, William Templin of Anchorage, AK, who stood faithfully by his side. Delfin was preceded in death by his grandparents Rev. T. J. and Shirley D. Jackson, and Mother Shirley A. (Jackson) Labrador, Aunts, Clemmie Webster, Nitell Starks, Yvonne Jackson, Cousins, John West, Rev. Vincent P. Joyner, Clarence "Skippy" Joyner, Preston Joyner, Anthony Joyner, Melba Wright, and Stacy Phillips. Delfin Labrador's legacy transcends the physical realm. His dedication to martial arts, commitment to teaching, love for God, and adherence to the way of the warrior will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
