Richard Armstrong died peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2023 in Houston, Texas. He was born in Galveston, Texas on November 7, 1943. Growing up there he found his lifelong passion for electronics and engineering. He created a workshop in his home's attic where he built his first radio. He attended Texas A&M University where he was a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band. After graduating in 1965, he pursued his passion for electronics and worked on radios and communications on the Apollo missions at NASA's Johnson Space Center. He worked on many other missions until his retirement. Because he was a true engineer, his family and friends called on him often for home projects, repairs and general problem solving. He married his beloved wife Betty thirty-two years ago and they enjoyed family time with their blended family, traveling, reading, and being with friends. He loved volunteering on things such as tutoring children in reading, working with Habitat for Humanity, AARP tax preparation, and working with environmental groups in Asheville, North Carolina. Richard and Betty purchased their dream retirement home in Asheville, NC. He loved gardening, nature photography and hiking. They divided their time between Asheville and their home in Nassau Bay, where they could be close to their family. They chose not to retire there since their children started having children of their own and both loved to spend time with the grandkids. All the grandkids loved hanging out with Pop; what fun adventures were they going to do next?! He is preceded in death by his parents John and Kathryn Armstrong and stepson Xavier Brito. He is survived by his wife Betty Armstrong; daughter Jennifer Rosenfeld (Darryl and their children Anna, Nicole and Eve); son Rick Armstrong (Anh-Thu and their children Cara, Emma and Brennan); Xavier's wife Robyn Brito and their children Sophia and Julia; stepson Jaime Brito (Kate and their children Claire, Nicolas and Mark); and stepdaughter Cristina Barr (Seth). Richard is also survived by his 5 siblings: John Armstrong (wife Ann, deceased); Bobby Armstrong (wife Lynda); Larry Armstrong (wife Marsha); Debbie Miller (husband Gary, deceased); Bonnie Allen and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in League City. Visitation will be 10am to 11am and the funeral Mass will begin at 11am. Richard will be interred at Mt Olivet Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday September 13, 2023 at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Lewy Body Dementia Association

Kathryn Grater

Kathryn Grater

Age - 93

December 6, 2023

Kathryn Ruth (Waddle) Grater quietly passed away at StoneCreek of Copperfield Senior Living, Houston, TX, early Sunday morning, December 3, 2023, after fighting an eight-year battle against cancer. Kathryn was born on September 12, 1930, to Eva Caroline Hoffman and Charles Edgar Waddle in Blairsville, Pennsylvania. She attended Blairsville High School and soon met her future husband, Blair John Grater, in Blairsville. They were married on December 11, 1948, and were together for 74 years. As a young woman, Kathryn worked as a waitress, starting at Dean's Diner in Blairsville and then in later years serving guests at the Fox Hill Golf and Banquet Center, Plymouth, Michigan. In 1978, Blair built the family home on a canal leading into one of Michigan's many lakes. Kathryn loved that house, homemaking, gardening, and traveling. She was well-known as the best baker in the family, her one-crust pies a favorite at many church gatherings. Because Blair was an employee of American Airlines, economical airfare to faraway places was a company perk. They were able to travel to all 50 states and 24 foreign countries. Some of those U. S. trips were on a BMW motorcycle, which Blair guided while she hung on for dear life! By 1992, they invested in a 38' travel trailer and became "Winter Texans," making the trip between Michigan and Brownsville, Texas, each year. Wherever they lived, Pinckney, MI; Corsicana, Brownsville, or Houston, Texas, Kathryn made many friends. She was an avid bowler with a 165 average, bowling in two leagues twice a week, and continued bowling until she turned 88. Recently, while a resident at StoneCreek, she was a frequent winner at the weekly Bingo competition. Kathryn was pre-deceased by her husband, Blair John Grater; daughter-in-law, Janice Taylor Grater; parents, Charles and Eva Waddle; siblings, Jane Waddle Hull, Richard Waddle, and Charles Waddle, who lost his life during WWII; a granddaughter, Rachael Grater; and one nephew, Charles (Nancy) Waddle. Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Alan, of Houston, TX; and four nieces: Melinda (Jerry) Rudabough, Phoenix, AZ; Debra (Joe) Reynolds, Orlando, FL; Terri Ector, Nashville, TN, and Patricia (David) Sapina, Levittown, PA. She also leaves behind one nephew, Randy (Donna) Waddle, of Levittown. Kathryn's four great-grandchildren will miss her greatly: Mathew (Angelika) Smith and Ryan Smith, and twins Merissa and Meagan Pierce, all of Vancouver, WA. Her four great-great-grandchildren are Chloe, Ella, Laynie, and Aliza Smith, also of Vancouver, WA. A memorial service in Pinckney, MI, will be announced later by the family.Show more
