Rene Guy B. Mongeau, age 89, of Newtown Square, PA, passed away on December 24, 2022 after a brief illness. Rene was born on February 16, 1933 to Theode & Aurore Mongeau in Central Falls, RI. After graduating from high school in 1951, he joined the U. S. Army and was stationed in Butzbach, Germany for three years. This is where he began his love for travel as he took the opportunity to visit many European countries during his deployment. Upon his return he attended Providence College and graduated with a BA. He completed a Masters Degree in Education at Boston College and went on to be awarded a PhD in French from Fordham University. After teaching High School in Massachusetts for a year, he and his wife, Carmen (deceased), moved to Pennsylvania in 1961 where he accepted a job as a French Professor at Villanova University, Villanova, PA. He taught at Villanova for 42 years, during which he was Chair of the Modern Language Department for many years. Rene was a world traveler, sailor, a lover of art and painting, gardener and avid reader. He especially loved his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware where he regularly hosted family and friends. He organized countless overseas trips for Villanova faculty, friends & family. He especially enjoyed sharing his love for the people and culture of his ancestral homeland, France. He survived by his children, Christopher G. Mongeau, Nicole M. Rudd, Gabrielle (Leigh) M. Cohen and his nine grandchildren, Lauren Mongeau, Elizabeth M. Vu, Geoffroy Mongeau, Claudia Mongeau, Isabelle C. Rudd, Griffin B. Rudd, Alison Cohen, Emilie Cohen, Michael Cohen and 4 great grand children as well as his sister, Lucille (Maurice) Aubin. Family will be receiving friends on Thursday, January 5th, 2023 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Logan-Videon Funeral Home, .
