Colville, WA

It is with deep sadness that the family of Renate "Rocky" Hinman, age 81, and Stewart Larry "Larry" Hinman, age 83, share that the couple died August 29th, 2023. The longtime Colville, WA, residents died following Larry's dramatic onset of dementia and his subsequent life-ending acts. To those who loved this couple of 64 years, this unspeakable tragedy leaves many unanswered questions and unyielding pain. Their family asks that those who knew and loved Renate & Larry, join them, instead, by remembering this fiercely loving and generous couple in either Colville, WA or Lewiston, ID. Celebrations of Life will be held this Fall on dates, locations, and times still to be determined. Larry was raised in Deary, ID where he attended school and worked in their family owned and operated businesses. After graduating from Deary High School, Larry enlisted in the U. S. Army and served overseas in the European Theatre. While in Germany, he met Renate Walburga Sperzel, a young waitress at a local pub where their friendship soon grew into love and a 64-year marriage. They exchanged vows on August 6, 1959 in Hanau, Germany and soon welcomed their daughter, Debra Renee Hinman in 1961. Stewart returned to the U. S. first and was soon joined stateside by his wife, Renate, daughter and soon to be born son, Ronald Dean Hinman. After his honorable discharge, Larry and Renate returned to Deary, ID where he worked again in the family businesses. They later moved to Lewiston, ID where Larry began worked road construction for Poe asphalt and paving. After 29 years with the company, they relocated to Sandpoint, Idaho, where he continued working road construction for both Inland Asphalt and then Peak Paving. It was in 1993 that Larry made an investment in Vaagen Paving in Colville and moved to Colville. Larry was a man in constant motion, He loved drag racing and restoring old cars, especially 40's Willys cars. He was a master at his trades. A wonderful father and grandfather, his grandsons and grand-daughters-in-law describes him as the cherished soft and kind grandfather figure who took them on outdoor adventures and invited them along on his shop projects. Larry and Renate spent their years enjoying the outdoors, camping, snowmobiling and outings with family and friends. Renate "Rocky" grew up as a survivor of the World War II in Bad Soden-Sal Munster, Germany. Her father, one of two Soldiers in their regiment, to return to their community from the front line, supported their communities with wild game and the threat of constant persecution. Rocky attended school and then finished her education in finishing school where they learned the basics of sewing, cooking and caring for the needs of a home. She had worked throughout her childhood and struggled with her family through incredibly difficult times and meager means. She therefore, knew the value of every dime she earned and simple amenities of life. Rocky was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who kept spotless her homes, Elk City, ID mountain cabin and travel camper without compromise and shoes lined neatly at front door. She was also a driver and co-crew chief for the many years of building, racing and modifying of American muscle cars with her family. No matter whether at the wheel of her car or the competitors, she crossed the line first with her lighting speed shifting, clutching and throttle control. She was a loving and strict, role model and mother. She loved her family fiercely and was fiercely loved in return. Rocky never took the simple things for granted. A touch opinionated, brutally honest and you always knew where she stood. She relished in the hours spent with family and friends, especially with a good card game, camping or rooting for her favorite Nascar driver or Gonzaga game on the television. The couple is preceded in death by their daughter Debra Renee Dunkel; Larry's brother, Monty Hinman, Larry and Renate's parents, Stewart and Lavelle (Hammond) Hinman and Adam and Maria (Sippelius) Sperzel, Renate's brother-in-law, Heinrich Noll The couple is survived by their son, R. Over the years, Gary worked in many different places, in and around Colville. He found his niche in commercial construction and would be away from home for several weeks at a time. They were his pride and joy. He would often shake a grandchild's hand on their birthday and slip them a little extra cash with a whisper, 'Now don't tell your grandma about that. " They never did. Gary had a love for the outdoors. Fishing and hunting were his favorite "manly" pastimes. For many years, he would go with good friends on annual elk and deer hunts and fishing trips. He had a love for, and a keen understanding of: guns, cars, fishing rods, coaching softball, tools, baseball, trading cards, metal detecting, and football. . . then God laughed and blessed him with two daughters. Luckily for him, his girls had a love for many of the same things, and tolerated the other interests, if it meant they got to spend time with their dad. Inge Bender

Inge Bender

Age - 83

November 13, 2023

In Loving MemoryInge Mebes Bender Inge Mebes Bender, a longtime Kettle Falls resident, passed away in Colville, Washington on November 3, 2023, with her loving family by her side. Inge was born on July 6, 1940 in Sekitsch, Yugoslavia to Phillip and Margaret Karbiener. Early in her life, Inge and her family, along with the majority of the population of Sekitsch were captured by communist forces and taken to a concentration camp, where many would pass away. Her brother Philipp, would sneak away in search of food to sustain the pair. Following the passing of their grandparents, Inge's remaining family would be separated, and while Inge spent the next years in an orphanage, followed by a foster family, her mother, following her escape from a labor camp, worked tirelessly to reunite them all. Inge, along with her family would immigrate to the United States in the 1950's, settling in New York, where she would attend and graduate from high school. Following her graduation, Inge would attend cosmetology school, becoming a hairdresser. This career would see her relocate to the U. S. Virgin Islands to work at a secondary location that her employer would send his most skilled hairdressers to care for exclusive vacationing clientele during the height of tourism season. One of the most memorable clients to grace Inge's chair was none other than Lady Bird Johnson. It was here in the Virgin Islands where she would meet the love of her life, Rene, a manager of Bluebeards Resort in St. Thomas. She saw him carrying a saddle, and being a lifelong horse lover, she knew there had to be a horse nearby, and her interest was piqued. Unbeknownst to her, Rene had already taken note of her presence, and was equally intrigued by her. The two would be wed in January of 1968, and shortly afterwards the pair would begin the search for a restaurant of his own. The pair would purchase Freddie's Tavern in Kettle Falls in 1969, transforming it into The Swiss Chalet, and built a cabin in Onion Creek shortly thereafter. Inge and her husband, Rene, would welcome two children, Heidi and Mark, before Rene's unexpected passing in 1981. Although her family strongly encouraged her to return to New York, wishing to maintain a semblance of normalcy in the kids lives, Inge would persevere in Kettle Falls, relying on her community of friends and neighbors to help along the way. In 1989, Inge would suffer a major heart attack, requiring a quintuple bypass, and it was discovered that her time in a concentration camp and subsequent years of malnutrition early in her life lead a rare blood disorder. Inge began public speaking events in the early 90's for local schools and organizations, recounting the stories of her early years in Europe, and the countless struggles she and her family persevered through. Air Force Colonel Brian Landry would interview Inge over the course of several years, constructing his PhD dissertation on surviving captivity around her life's story. In 2009, Inge would be wed to Theodore Bender, a longtime friend who was a fellow Mason with Rene, and the two would live together in Kettle Falls until his passing in 2015. Inge would continue to speak at schools for many years, sharing her story with the children of Stevens County for the last time in October 2023. When she wasn't speaking with kids or spending time with her children and grandchildren, Inge loved to spend her time outdoors, from watching horses and feeding the birds, to digging in her garden and tending to her flowers. Inge was preceded in death by her husbands, Rene Mebes and Theodore Bender; her parents, Phillip and Margaret Karbiener, and her brother, Philipp Karbiener. She is survived by her children, Heidi Hastings and Mark Mebes; four grandchildren; Jonas Mebes, Justin Mebes, Connor Mebes and Ashley Hastings, and six great grandchildren Sophia, Kyra, Gabe, Ava, Carter and Jax. The funeral services for Inge will be held at 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Washington. Inge will be laid to rest with her husband, Rene at Highland Cemetery in Colville. Please visit the on-line memorial and sign the guestbook at www. danekasfuneralchapel. com.
