Bruce M. Hannon, 89, of Champaign, IL., died on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at the Hinds Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ivesdale. The Rev. Father Patrick O'Neal will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Ivesdale. Memorial contributions can be made to Bruce was born on August 14, 1934 in Decatur, IL., a son of Walter L. and Kathleen Phalen Hannon. He married Patricia Coffey in 1956 and she passed away on September 2, 2022. Surviving children are; Claire (Brian) Deal, Laura (Scott) Madden, and Brian (Rhonda Starkey) Hannon. Surviving grandchildren are: Caitlin (Derek) Peterson, John Deal, Ellen (Joe) Saathoff, Sean (Regina) Madden, Ben (Genevieve) Madden, Tyler (Camille) Starkey, Logan (Megan) Hannon, as well 10 great-grandchildren: Violet, George, Mae, Richard, Frederick, Lincoln, Kennedy, James, and 2 more on the way. Also surviving is a sister: Ellen (Chuck) Wolfenberger. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother: John Hannon and a sister: Susan Hannon Gorman. John P. Hummel, 92, of Champaign, IL passed away at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL on February 15, 2024. He was born in Blue Earth, MN on July 29, 1931 to Earl and Charlotte (Almquist) Hummel. He graduated from Blue Earth High School in 1949.Affectionately nicknamed “Doc” in high school for his serious demeanor and studious ways, John earned a Bausch & Lomb scholarship to attend the University of Rochester. He participated fully in campus life through varsity basketball and fraternity activities. He was president of the senior class and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated in 1953 with a B.S. in chemistry with high distinction.He married hometown sweetheart Bonnie Bernards in Blue Earth in 1953. They moved to California where John commenced graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. A doctoral advisee of the Nobel Prize-winning chemist, Glenn Seaborg, John received his PhD in chemistry in 1956 and joined the faculty of the University of Illinois in chemistry and physics. He retired in 1993 as Associate Director of the School of Chemical Sciences. During the last several years of his career he was deeply involved in the planning of the Chemistry and Life Sciences Laboratory.During his tenure at the university, he was a member of the Athletic Association Board of Directors, at the time the policy and decision-making entity for intercollegiate athletics. He served as chair, steadily guiding the association through a period of major transition.He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie and brother Richard. He is survived by children Glenn (Linda) Hummel of Valparaiso, IN; Paul (Carla) Hummel of Las Vegas, NV; Thomas Hummel (Shelly Reiten) of Savoy, IL; and Mary (William) Bahnfleth of State College, PA. Mourning their Grandpa Doc are Patrick Hummel, Christina Hummel (Jeff Fardink), Robbie (Logan) Hummel, Dan Hummel, Charlotte Bahnfleth (Nate Stevens), Anna (Ryan) Blake, and Emma Hummel. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Emmett Fardink and Sylvia Stevens.Arrangements are under the care of Morgan Memorial Home of Savoy. Memorials may be directed to Camp Knutson, 11148 Manhattan Point Blvd, Crosslake, MN 56442 or the charity of one’s choice. He is survived by his wife of 42 years; 2 children, Becky (Ian) Athen of WA and Dustin Bielert of Philo; and 4 grandchildren, Ivy, Rain, Cloud and Sky. Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 1 grandson, Titan. Kevin worked at Plastipak. In his younger years he enjoyed motorcycle riding with Joyce, camping and jet skiing. Bill Sanford passed peacefully Sunday morning, February 18 at Carle Hospital. Visitation is at Webber Street Christian Church, 107 S. Bill was a painter at the University of Illinois until he retired at 62 but then continued to paint until he was 89. He spent his life loving and serving the Lord, and is a member of CU Church. He is in glory with his beloved wife Frannie. Candy L. Gurney, 58, formerly of Westville passed away on February 11, 2024 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. She was born December 30, 1965 in Danville to parents Jerry and Roxy [Calloway] Bertelli. Candy attended Westville High School and graduated with the Class of ’85. She was a CNA for several years before deciding her passion was to hit the road and travel. She did just that and drove a truck for several local companies. She looked forward to being outdoors, especially if it entailed boating, camping, or fishing. Candy had a heart of gold and truly just loved people and life. She loved cats and dogs, and above all else, she loved being a grandmother and spending time with her family. Candy is survived by her children Stephanie (Michael) Gurney, Johnathon (Jamie) Gurney, Michael Gurney, and Jerry Gurney; and her grandchildren Aaliyah, Nora, Madeline, and Jada. Also surviving are her brother Butch (Karrin) Bertelli; nieces and nephews Dean (Sam) Bertelli, Matthew (Michelle) Bertelli, Emmalee (Ron) Bertelli, and Holly Bertelli; and her best friend Debbie Sunders.
