Reagan viewing will be on October 13, 2023, from 5 pm to 7 pm and followed by a celebration of Life on October 14, 2023 at 1 pm, here at Steele-Bullock Funeral Home, at 3950 Turnpike Rd, Portsmouth VA. 23701.

Francis Flournoy "Floss" Thompson passed away Friday, December 1, 2023. Mr. Thompson was born May 21, 1935 to the late Garrie Burton Thompson, Sr. , and the late Elizabeth Raines Thompson. Francis grew up in the town of Chatham, VA. , and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy. He owned and operated Thompson's Haberdashery in Chatham and was active in numerous organizations in the town. He was an avid golfer and helped establish Cedars Country Club. Later in his life he moved to Salem, VA and owned and operated Thompson's Quality Clothes. The last five years of his life were spent at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he made many new friends who became like his family. He loved dancing and singing up and down the halls, and being of any help he could to anyone. "Floss" never met a stranger. Mr. Thompson is survived by his son, Scott H. Thompson of Delaware; daughter, Dale T. Brumfield (Barry) of Chatham; grandchildren, Alexis T. Lockerman, Hunter H. Thompson, Lukey Thompson (Lacey), John Thompson, and Joshua Mcgee, all of Delaware, as well as Emily K. Brumfield (Susann Hessen) and Joshua R. Brumfield (Chiara); thirteen great-grandchildren; and his brother, Robert B. Thompson (Debra). In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by one brother, Garrie B. John Bowe Jr. , 79, passed away on November 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 26, 1943 in Danville, VA to the late Ethel Garrett Bowe Covington and the late John Henry Bowe. He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Mrs. Clara Mebane Bowe. John was a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, and was also a member of VFW Post #29. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. He worked for many years in maintenance at Danville Regional Medical Center previous to his retirement. In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by a son; Kevin Bowe and wife Theresa of Marion, AR; a daughter; Deidre Bowe of Danville, VA; four grandchildren; Chymaiah and Zoe Bowe of Marion, AR and Tamyra and Anthony Brown of Danville, VA; a daughter in law; Camille Bowe of Los Angeles, CA; a sister in law; Faye Jeffries of Austin, TX; a brother in law; George Mebane of Houston, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by a son; Ray Bowe; two sisters; Eleanor McNeill and Dorris Harper; and a brother; Wilbert Bowe. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 12:00 Noon at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 2901 Bertha Wilson Road, Providence, NC 27315 with Pastor Roderick Fitz presiding and eulogy by Pastor Teresa Hardy. Catherine McNichols Ferrell, 90, passed away on November 24, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on September 18, 1933 to the late Annie Jane Evans McNichols and the late Chester Wyatt McNichols. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of many years, Mr. Joel Ellis Ferrell. Catherine was a member of Blairs Baptist Church for many years and attended regularly until her recent illness. She was employed by Dan River Mills in the Research Department and Cotton Division prior to their closing. Catherine and Ellis are survived by two daughters; Janet Ferrell of Richmond, VA and Darlene Whitney (Billy) of Keeling, VA; two Grandchildren; Melissa Bearden and Meredith Powell (Neil); a precious great grandchild; Larkin Powell; niece; Connie Jerman; Nephew; Kenny McNichols; special cousins; Beverly Ferrell Burnette and Maria McNichols Daniel; and special friends; Audrey Bliss, Peggy Wright, Dolores Brackin, and Rick Turner. In addition to her husband and parents, Catherine was predeceased by a brother; William Acree McNichols. Gladys L. Gravely Hairston, 82, of Brass Shop Road, Ridgeway, VA, departed this life on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Mulberry Creek Nursing and Rehab. Gladys was born September 11, 1941, in Martinsville, VA, to the late Elijah Gravely and Nancy Hodge Gravely. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Hairston; and four brothers, Herman Gravely, Rufus Gravely, Leroy Gravely, and Stafford "Ed" Gravely. Gladys was a faithful member of New Light Baptist Church in Martinsville, VA. She served as an Usher and Deaconess and was a member of the church choir. She was a graduate of G. W. Carver High School, class of 1959. She then went on to work at Panell Knitting until becoming disabled. Those left behind to cherish her memory include: one son, Thomas E. (Rodericka) Hairston, Jr. of Salisbury, MD; one daughter, Teressa H. (Alan) Tyree of Ridgeway, VA; four sisters-in-law, Elizabeth S. Hairston of Martinsville, VA, Rubena H. Dillard of Charlotte, NC, Lula (Lawrence) Hairston Jones of Martinsville, VA and Eva Hairston of Creedmoor, NC; three grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A family visitation will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:30 a. m. until the time of the service at 12 noon which is to be held at the C. R. V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home, Martinsville, VA. The burial will follow at Hailey Family Cemetery, Brass Shop Road, Ridgeway, VA.
