October 7, 2023, Raymond Douglas O'Brien, 82, of Carthage, NY passed away peacefully with his sons at his bedside at Hospice of Jefferson County after a 3-year battle with cancer Ray lived with his companion for the last 14 years, Jeanne Staplin Fuller at 410 South Washington Street in Carthage, NY Jeanne provided love, compassion, and support to Ray throughout his battle Ray was a high school math teacher at Copenhagen Central School for 34 years For most of those years and several after he retired in 1997, Ray also ran a house painting business He was a past member of the Copenhagen School Board He touched the lives of his many students and clients over these years Their visits, cards, and well wishes in recent months meant the world to him Ray enjoyed playing poker, especially with his younger son, Tim and he enjoyed playing golf, especially with his older son, Steve He was a past member of Lions of Carthage, the Carlowden Country Club & Highland Meadows Golf Club Ray was somewhat of a history buff and enjoyed reading genealogy Ray had three children with his wife of over 40 years, June Elizabeth O'Brien Their oldest, Tammi Alberry, lives with her husband, Jeff Alberry in Florida near their daughter Ashley Steve lives in Nashville, TN and Tim lives in the house in which the family grew up on Route 126 in Black River, NY Tammi also has two sons, Tory Norfolk, and Alex Stephens Alex is currently serving in the U S Army Steve and his wife of 27 years, Wendy, have one daughter Sophie Tim has three boys, Jared, Jake, and Joey Ray is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews Ray is the oldest of two boys and was born September 19, 1941, to Norbert E O'Brien and Mary Mae Fleming O'Brien He is survived by his younger brother, Donald, who lives in Lake Bonapart and Lady Lake, FL with his wife Mary He is also survived by a half-sister, Linda Perin Anderson, and her husband Lanny who lives in Belmont, NC, and a half-brother Loren Perin who lives in Cramerton, NC After Graduating from Sackets Harbor High School in 1959, Ray attended S U N Y at Albany where he received a B S in mathematics Ray worked on math algorithms, played online poker, and coerced Jeanne into watching history movies in his final weeks and days Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 21st from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Lundy Funeral Home, 500 State Street, Carthage, NY In lieu of flowers, Ray has asked that donations be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown, NY 13601, or Volunteer Transport Center, 24685 Route 37, Watertown, NY 13601 Arrangements are entrusted to the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc 500 State Street Carthage, NY 13619 To leave a message of sympathy for Ray's family please visit www lundyfuneralhome com and sign the tribute wall

WEST CARTHAGE - Barbara Kay (Bingle) Flynn, 63, Stone St. , passed away peacefully in the presence of her sister Beth Snider at Samaritan Medical Center on December 4th after a courageous battle with colon cancer. In her final days, she was surrounded by family and friends. Barbara was born at the family home on Madison St. in West Carthage on January 1, 1960, to Harry and Geniveve Bingle. She attended the West Carthage Elementary School next to her house, where two of her sisters taught. She graduated from Carthage Central High School with the Class of 1978 and subsequently attended Onondaga Community College and Jefferson Community College. She married Alan L. Flynn, on August 31st, 1985, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage. Barbara and Alan had two children, daughter Bethany born in 1986, and son Adam born in 1990. Barbara lived to fill the world with music. She could play a wide range of instruments, but she was most well-known for her talents with the flute and piano. She taught both at North Country Music and played with the Northern Choral Society, JCC Orchestra, First Baptist Church, Emmanuel Congregational Church, and the band Soul Force, as well as many other local groups. She also played for weddings, funerals, parties, and simply for the pleasure of friends. She was also a talented vocalist and the director of the children's choir and adult choir at First Baptist Church and Emmanuel Congregational Church. She loved to create beauty through writing and art. She was a short story writer and photographer at Carthage Tribune. She painted, drew, and sketched. She was a master of crafts, from cardboard dollhouses to beautifully painted rocks. She wrote poetry which she also illustrated. She gave many of her pieces away to friends and family. Barbara loved nature, animals, and working in her beautiful garden. She grew morning glories that crept up the side of the house into the windows and 13-foot sunflowers. She had many beloved pets, and she passed her love of animals down to her children. Her love of nature beckoned her to long walks in the woods, to waterfalls and fields, and her beloved Effley. There is too much of Barbara to share in these few words. In addition to what we have mentioned, she was a secretary at Carthage Chamber of Commerce; involved in Carthage Little Theater and Watertown Lyric Theater; and played and marched with the Camden Continental Fife and Drum. She is survived by her husband Alan L. Flynn, who never left her side during her battle with cancer. She is also survived by her two children, Adam C. Flynn and Bethany L. (Flynn) Bryant, her grandson, Flynn J. Bryant; son-in-law Micheal A. Bryant; her sister Anne (Bingle) Eckelman and her husband; sister Mary (Bingle) Wolf and her husband; brother Carl Bingle and his wife; sister Beth (Bingle) Snider; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her mother and father; sister June (Bingle) Haugen; half-brother David Wisner; brother-in-law Chuck Haugen; brother-in-law Terry Snider; and sister-in-law Marsha Flynn. Myrtle Conger

Theresa - Myrtle Pauline Duff, Calhoun, Conger has finally made it to the hopefully pearly gates to greet her beloved family. Myrtle was born on March 3rd, 1948, in the village of Theresa at her great-grandma's house. She was the daughter of the late William M. Duff and Irene Gladys Hodge Duff. She graduated from Indian River Central School, Myrtle attended Watertown School of Nursing and graduated in 1968. She worked as a nurse at a variety of places, including several schools, Fort Drum, for the State of New York, and private duty, up until she retired from Indian River School as the school nurse in 2009. After meeting her husband, William, she helped him at his stores and restaurants until October 2022. She is survived by a brother, James Widrick of Watertown, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by her two brothers, Alex (Butch) and Jerry; a sister, Diana. A daughter, Cheri Sue Duffy passed away in 1986 due to a freaky car accident. Many aunts, uncles. cousins are with heavenly father now. Myrtle's first marriage, to Rhoderick Calhoun, ended in divorce. She married William Conger in June of 2013 and were happily together until her passing. Myrtle enjoyed meeting people and met a lot from all over the world. She also enjoyed helping Ryan's Wish Foundation, collecting donations to help people. She was the first woman in Theresa Ambulance Services. She also started the Little Theresa Theater and worked with children ages four to eighteen. She spent a few years as a Girl Scout Leader and had had 48 years of service to Veterans of Foreign Affairs, Posts of Theresa, and Gouverneur. Myrtle loved Halloween, Christmas, her dogs, and her goats, and was a self-proclaimed crazy country girl. Per her wishes, there will be no calling hours. "No one visited me while I was here on earth, don't want them to call on me when I am gone. " Burial will happen at a later date, where she will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery next to her daughter, Cheri Sue. Joseph Strife

Joseph C. Strife, 61, of Carthage, NY, passed away November 24, 2023 at his home. He was born on November 8, 1962 in Lowville, NY, son of Carlton J. and Dolores A. (Hanno) Strife. He graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1981. Joe was very dedicated to his current career working for the Town of Champion, notably as the Highway Superintendent for the past several years. He could be seen at any time of the day/night checking roads, looking for that latest snowfall. When not working he could be found; chasing that monster buck (that he endearingly referred to as "Bruno") or driving one his beloved big green tractors. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman; a proud member of the NRA, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Ducks Unlimited organization. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, racing, and riding ATV's. Joe was a generous benefactor, consistently supporting charitable organizations and purchasing raffle tickets for various charitable causes. Among his survivors are his beloved wife Diane, his spitting-image daughter, Mariah G. Strife, and his fur-grandson, Diesel of Carthage; his loving mother, Dolores Strife, Black River; three sisters and their husbands, Shari (Rodney) McIntosh, Watertown, Sandy (Mark) Connelly, Felts Mills, and Holly (Stephen) Erdner, Colton; brothers, Michael (Patty) Strife, Carthage, Mark (Shanie) Strife, Carthage, Scott (Billie Jo) Strife, Three Mile Bay, Paul (Althea) Strife, Memphis, a sister-in-law, Beth Strife, Elbridge, mother-in-law; Carol Vargulick, brother-in-laws; William (Christina) Vargulick, Stephen (MaryAnn) Vargulick, & many nieces and nephews, whom he adored. Gouverneur- Catherine A. Benware, 78, formerly of W. Barney Street died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 23, 2023, in Carthage, NY. She was born on December 9, 1944, in Theresa, New York to the late Jerome & Sarah Pauline (Hatch) House. Per her wishes, she will be cremated, and her services will be held privately by her family. Catherine graduated from Indian River High School. Two marriages ended in divorce. She retired as a Quality Control Manager after 25 years of dedicated service in 2003 from Car-Freshener in Watertown, New York. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Damon) June, Richville, NY; her two sisters, Josephine Covalle, Florida; and Marie Brown, North Carolina and 4 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Stephen Sylver

Age - 75

- Stephen E. Sylver passed away on September 27, 2023, at his home with his family by his side. He was under the care of Compassionate Hospice. Steve was born on December 26, 1948, to the late Clarence and Marjorie Sylver. He grew up in West Carthage and graduated from Carthage Central School. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Korea, Kansas, and New Mexico. As proud as he was of his military service, he was equally as proud of becoming an Eagle Scout. Throughout his life, he encouraged young scouts to become Eagle Scouts. He felt that the training and valuable knowledge remained with him throughout his life. While in the service, he married Mary Jewett in 1969. They settled in Jericho, Vermont, where they raised their family. Steve drove tractor-trailers for UPS for over 30 years, retiring in 2004. Steve enjoyed carpentry projects and used his skills to build a hunting camp in 1987. He enjoyed the solitude and quiet of the Vermont woods. He treasured his hours spent with his daughters and grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud of. He was a member of the American Legion in Winter Haven, Florida, and a life member of the VTW in Essex Junction, Vermont. He was known to enjoy an afternoon at the bar. Steve and Gail (Bears) Sylver, his second wife, traveled for fourteen years in their camper, seeing most of the US, including a summer in Alaska. Summers were spent in Vermont and Saranac Lake and winters in Florida. Due to illness, Florida became a permanent residence in 2022. Steve is survived by his wife, Gail; his daughters, Tausha (Adam) Sylver in Shelburne, Vermont, and Lisa (Sven) Tareen, and Lisa's two children, Sam and India, all of whom live in Ottawa, Canada. He is also survived by his three sisters, Sister Constance Sylver of Carthage, New York, Dob Doscher of Weare, New Hampshire, and Sue King of Portage, Michigan, as well as a sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephew. He is predeceased by his parents, his younger brother, Alan, and his beloved dog Button. Steve will be remembered for his courage when fighting adversity, his quiet demeanor, his dry humor, and his care and giving spirit in helping others. Carthage - Ruth M. Gyurko, 95, of 35322 Putman Hill Rd. , passed away at the Carthage Area Hospital on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, with her loving family at her side. Ruth was born in Natural Bridge to Eber and Grace (Stafford) Slye on March 16th, 1928. She attended Carthage High School. On June 29th, 1946, she married Leslie Gyurko at St. Henry's Church in Natural Bridge with Reverend J. Karlton Dewey officiating. They were happily married for 72 years before Leslie's passing in 2019. She was employed at a variety of places, including Durkee's Bakery, the old Officer's Loop on Fort Drum, the Carthage Central High School Cafeteria, and Dr. Miller Cook. Most of all, Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and her many friends and also enjoyed dancing and listening to country music. She and Leslie were members of the Black River Valley Fiddlers for several years. Ruth is survived by her two children, Karlton (Alice) Gyurko, of Carthage, and Valerie (Andy Gladwin) Gyurko of Latham; her two grandchildren, Kathleen of Lowville, and Kyle (Sally) Gyurko of Edmeston; two great-grandchildren, Kaelynn Gyurko and Jackson Foy, as well as several nieces and nephews, and many friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Leslie; her parents; a brother, Vernon Slye, a sister, Geraldine Slye Howe and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Gyurko. Calling hours will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Carthage on Monday, October 30th, 2023, from 11 a. m. -1 p. m. , with a funeral mass to follow at 1 p. m. with Reverand Todd Thibault officiating. Her burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Natural Bridge. A memorial reception will be held after the burial at the Sahara Restaurant in Fargo. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. James Catholic Church, the Carthage Area Rescue Squad, or the First Responders at Great Bend or Deferiet Fire Departments.
