Irma Marie Franck, 70, passed away at her home on Monday, February 12, 2024. She was born on February 15, 1953. A former resident of Reedly, she lived in Firebaugh for the last couple years of her life. She was a religious woman, attending St. Joseph Catholic Church in Firebaugh. She was a Social Worker, specializing in Senior Living. A proud grandma to 4 grandchildren (Madisun, John, Alfred, and Gianna Valdez). She is also survived by her loving husband of 30+ years, Raymond Franck. They have two children, son Alfred Valdez, and daughter Clarice McPherson. Irma had 7 brothers and sisters, Alex Cardiel, Rene Cardiel, John Cardiel, Anna Ramirez, Sidni Cardiel, and Bernadette Indart. She was proceed in death by her sister, Ramona Munoz. A rosary and mass will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 starting at 9:30am at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Firebaugh, CA. Her urn will be interred at Fresno Memorial Gardens following the funeral Mass.

Betty Louise Freitas joined her angels in heaven on Saturday January 6,2024, at 78 years old. Betty was born in Calistoga, Ca to Eula Burns and James Gardner. She was raised in Los Banos with her 11 siblings and her mother Eula and step father Charles Brinlee. Betty worked for many years at Wool Growers until she later met her husband John Freitas and began working at The Lucky Strike. Where she met many life long friends that turned into family. She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers; Dennis, Jerry, Chuck, Jim, three sisters; Pat, Shirley, Alice, and her husband John Freitas. She is survived by her two children Jimmy and Lisa Scott, three grandchildren Cori, Cody, Samantha, and 6 great grandchildren Nicholas, Noah, Alaina, Mia, Miya, and Elias. Betty was best known for her big heart and her willingness to help those in need. She was an amazing mother and an ever better grandmother. She will be deeply missed.

Dorothy Jean Souza

With sadness, we announce the death of Dorothy Jean Souza. She was born on July 19, 1932 to Mateus and Maria Souza, Sr. and passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023. She lived on the family farm 3 miles out of town off of highway 152 where you could find her helping with many different chores. Later in she moved to town with her family where she resided during her long- blessed life of 91 years. The youngest of 7 children. Her siblings included Marie, Mateus, Jr., Laura and two brothers who passed away soon after birth. Dorothy attended schools in Los Banos. While in high school she was a member if the Girls' Athletic Club where she enjoyed playing basketball. She said that she wasn't very good at it but always tried her best. After graduating, she became a bookkeeper with the Los Banos Dairymen's Association until her retirement. Then, she volunteered at the Los Banos Community Hospital, now Sutter Gould Hospital. There she met many friends and always enjoyed the announcement when a baby was born. She gained a number of longtime friends. Dorothy continued to volunteer until the pandemic when volunteers were not allowed. Dorothy was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Association, Lusso-American and AARP, where she served on many different committees most recently she was the clubs Historian. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mateus and Maria Souza Sr., brother, Mateus Souza Jr., (Edna), Laura Tristao, (Marciel) and two brothers Joseph Souza and Joseph Souza, Jr. her niece Lori Ingram's husband, Brent Ingram and niece, Carol Aspesi. She is survived by her 3 nieces, Mellissa Womack, Deborah Souza and Lori Ingram, great nieces Sierra (Ryan) Schmitt, Amanda (Charles) and most recently great, great niece River Rose. Some of her favorite things were her many travels around the world, going on AARP trips, attending Roger Rocca plays in Fresno, spending time with family and friends, making sure her house and yard were always kept up. Her yard was always filled with many beautiful flowers. Another joy of hers were the many cats that she nurtured until their natural deaths. She will definitely be missed by her current living cat, Lucky, who wandered into her yard one day and decided to stay. Dorothy Jean Souza will truly be missed for the joy that she brought to family and friends.

Henry Pereira passed away quietly on Friday, December 8, 2023, at New Bethany at the age of 92. Henry was born on January 4, 1931, in Los Banos, California to A. F. and Maria Pereira. He attended Charleston Elementary and worked on the family farm. Henry farmed all his life, first with his father and brothers, and then later with his wife & son. Henry served in the U. S. Army from 1952 to 1957. During his time in the service, he was a driver for Five-Star General Omar Bradley. After returning from the service, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Spadafore. They raised three children together. Henry has enjoyed many years of hunting, camping and watching his children and grandchildren play sports and show at the local fairs. Henry was preceded in death by his son Henry (Hanky) Pereira Jr. and his parents, A. F. & Maria Pereira, as well as brothers, Antone and Joe Pereira and sister Mary P. Silva. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of 65 years; Daughters Debbie Pereira-Young and Mary Lou Gilardi (Leo); Grandchildren Josh Pereira (Taylor); Jackie Young; Nick Gilardi (Sarah) and Jenna Gilardi. Great Grandchildren Jaxson Pereira, Liam Diedrich and Hunter Gilardi. He is also survived by his brother, Manuel Pereira and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1621 Center Avenue, Los Banos. Visitation will begin at 9 a. m. with Rosary at 10 a. m. followed by Mass. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to New Bethany Guild, Bristol Hospice or St. Joseph's Church.

Gladys Affonso

Gladys Affonso, 102, passed away on December 6, 2023. She was born in Long Beach, California on September 20, 1921. She spent her childhood on the Bixby Ranch in Mesa, Arizona, and then relocated to Dos Palos in 1947 and then settling in Los Banos for the remainder of her life. She married her husband John Thomas Blackwood very young and they had nine children together. She lost her husband and raised her children on her own for many years. Married Frank Affonso in 1965 and their time together was filled with love, laughter and family. He became part of the Blackwood clan and they spent many happy years together until his death in 1987. Gladys was such an incredible woman. She put herself through Barber college and provided for her eight children and family as a single mother. In 1962 Gladys became the First Lady Barber in Los Banos. When you think of "getting a haircut", you always think of Gladys. Her warm smile and kind heart were always an inviting passage to her barber chair. She was always warm, caring and smart as a whip! She knew everyone in town and greeted you with a kind smile. If ever you knocked on her door, her first steps were to greet you with a hug and then immediately begin cooking. There was always a hot meal for everyone. Gladys was an inspiration and treasure to her family and friends She was very involved in her community the Soroptimist Club, TOPS, she was a "Pink Lady" volunteering her time at the Los Banos Hospital, and Gladys graciously gave haircuts to the homebound or people in the hospital as a contribution to her old customers and the needy. Gladys happiest times were spent with her family but, she did enjoy going to the casino on the bus with her friends or any time to any casino. She enjoyed travelling! She went to Hawaii, Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, New York, Arizona, Portugal, Mexico, Canada, and even Rome (where she was blessed by seeing and touching the Pope). Her energy was incredible. She could "outwalk" most of her children on her many travels leaving them behind to seek out her next adventure. She is Preceded in death by husband John Thomas Blackwood in 1957; Frank Affonso in 1987; Children: Gene Blackwood, Louie Blackwood, Edward Blackwood, Richard Blackwood, Margaret Stavers, Mary Silva, and Lupe McCabe; Grandchildren: Tracy Blackwood, Shane Blackwood, Michael Stavers, and Julie Braun; Great Grandchildren: Sydney Blackwood-Jones, and Daniel Blackwood. Siblings: Mary Rea, Fernando Fuerte, Salvador Fuerte, Ralph Fuerte and Lupe Fernandez. Gladys is survived by her children: Tom (Christine) Blackwood, Nellie (Eulan) Vandemark, and son-in-law Wayne McCabe. Grandchildren: John Blackwood, Veronica Alexander, Nicole VanDeMark, Donna Ward, Michael McCabe, Ashley Jones, Shelly Estrada, Brook Lopez, Tisha Freitas, Heather Blackwood, Shawn Blackwood, Christian and Nathan Braun, Marc Blackwood, Sandra Terranova, and Tracy Sparks. Great Grandchildren Leslie Manning; Jordan Alexander; Britney, Amber & Nicholas McCabe; Grant and Samantha Jones; Michael Carranza, Sienna and Joseph Freitas; Gavin and Mia Estrada; Ayden and Magdelina Lopez; Bo Blackwood; Tucker Terranova; Hayden and Cameron Sparks; and 11 Great Great Grandchildren. Funeral Services for Gladys will be held on December 15, 2023 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church beginning with the recitation of the holy rosary at 10:00 a. m. and a funeral mass at 10:30 a. m. , burial will follow at the Los Banos District Cemetery.

Margaret L Sliger was born to Jeff and Martha Lou Ella Wiley on December 12, 1932, in Isola Mississippi and left us on November 22, 2023, to soar with the Angels. Margaret moved to Los Banos in 1956 and established Margaret's Beaty Salon a few years later. She loved her career, her customers and those who worked beside her. She was a very caring woman who would help anyone who needed a lending hand. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, brother James (JB) Wiley and son in law Rodney Hammack. She is survived by her sisters Faye Stebens, Katie (Roger) Havens, Mary (Roger) Hammack and brother Jeff (Donna) Wiley's son Alan (Dawn) Jones, daughters Ann Hammack and Lisa (Larry) Carmo, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and miss her greatly. In Lieu of flowers her family requests donations to the local Kops for Kids sponsored by PAL, a program that was very dear to her heart and that she donated generously too for many years.

Mark Bodley was born on August 15, 1934, in La Jara, Colorado. His parents were quite the entrepreneurs, and he had an interesting childhood moving from place to place while his parents worked as share crop farmers in Colorado, when his father helped with the construction of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona, and again when his father worked in the iron mines in Kelso, California. Mark was old enough to help out with the bar and cafe and American Legion Hall his parents opened up when they moved back to Colorado, finally settling in the small town of Saguache. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra, in 1953. He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving in Adana, Turkey, and bases in Mt. Home, Idaho and Sacramento. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting/education from Western State Colorado University. The couple lived in Pueblo, Colorado until moving to California's Bay Area where Mark worked for Burroughs Corporation as the West Coast Office Supervisor and as a business manager for the California School Employees Association. In 1968, he moved to Los Banos, taking a job as the Assistant Superintendent of Business for the Los Banos Unified School District. He also served as the district's Classified Personnel Director for 40 years, retiring in 2008. Mark was very civic-minded, serving on the boards of the Merced School Employees Federal Credit Union, Merced Mosquito Abatement District Board of Trustees, Central Valley Health and Welfare Trust, Merced County Employees Retirement Board, and was a volunteer California Certified Health Insurance Counselor. He was also a senior volunteer for the California Highway Patrol. He was a member of the Los Banos Elks, Los Banos Golden Agers, AARP, California School Employees Association, California School Business Officials, Los Banos Sportsmans Association, and was a registered school business administrator. Mark was active in all sports during his lifetime. He earned 15 varsity sports letters while in high school. He was the Colorado All-State Six-Man football quarterback in 1951. He earned medals in the pole vault, high jump and discus at the Colorado State Track Meet during his junior and senior years in high school and was a member of the US Air Force Track Team while stationed at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento. Mark participated in Masters Track and Field meets until a heart condition forced him to curtail his running activities. He won two Senior Olympic gold medals in the Decathlon (10 events) at ages 45 and 46. As an avid golfer, he had numerous "holes-in-one" and in 2009 had a score of 74 at Ridgemark Golf Club equaling his age at the time. Mark and Sandra enjoyed traveling, especially golf excursions. They spent many vacations in Hawaii with their daughters and their families. He enjoyed watching the grandkids participate in sports and other school activities. Family was of utmost importance to him. Mark was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Sandra, and is survived by his loving companion, Pauline Young; his three daughters and their spouses, Christy (Robert Huff), Roxy (Les Gomes), and Connie Falasco (Aaron Olague); and by his eight grandchildren, Justin (April) and Janelle Durrer (Kalei Konrad) and Robbie Huff; Kyle (Danielle), Cody (Anaise), and Mariah Gomes; and Rhiannon and Shae Falasco. Mark had six great-grandchildren: Branson and Maddyn Gomes; Lexi and Navy Gomes; and Vivian and Emery Konrad. Funeral services will be held at Whitehurst Funeral Chapel in Los Banos on December 5 at 10:00 am, burial at the National Veterans Cemetery in Santa Nella at 12:30, and a reception at Espana's Restaurant from 1:00 - 4:00. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Los Banos Unified School District Scholarship Fund.

Daniel Zavala

We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved father, Daniel Fernando Zavala. At the age of 81 he passed on October 29, 2023. Known as Danny to most, he was born in Bellavista, Callao, Peru to Judith Rios Villar and Domingo Zavala Alejos. Danny served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and continued his service in the US Coast Guard before beginning his career as a Stationary Engineer for Local 39. He loved to break out in song, dance, and for many years tinker on cars. Often, he would say "unconditional love" which will always be remembered. Those left to cherish his memory are his spouse Rosemary Zavala, brother Pablo Zavala, sister Judy Davies, and children Diana, Cynthia, Danny, Ron, Timothy, Daphne, Celeste, and Caleb who he raised. Followed by 27 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
