James Gill

James Gill

Age - 80

November 21, 2023

James Edward Gill, 80, passed away on the night of Tuesday, November 14th, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born in Hinton on August 1st, 1943, to the late John Estil Gill and Odessa Lee (Wills) Gill. After a childhood of exploring the woods and attending a one-room schoolhouse, he graduated from Washington High School in Indiana in 1961, and later studied nursing and became an LPN. Believing in community service and self-reliance, he served as an AmeriCorps Vista, and served on the board of the Appalachian South Folklife Center, to empower rural communities. He had one son with Georgia Reitz. Later, he worked as a nursing home charge nurse, and through this work, he met his wife of 35 years, Paula Anne (Cooper) Gill. They were married June 25th, 1988 in Pearisburg, VA and had five children. The great work of his life was the farm he sculpted and preserved for his family. From its highest hilltop, the sheep-dotted fields rolled down to the door of the house he built himself. There, mornings often began with the bellow of his own made-up songs (or familiar tunes with new and improved lyrics). On warm evenings, he sometimes brought out his guitar to sing with his family. His many books, stories, and songs instilled not only a respect for hard work, but for curiosity and creation. He labored through pain and weather, to till and plant the fields in spring, shear sheep and bail hay in the summer sun, and search for lost lambs in the February snow. As his children grew, he taught them to tend the land, its creatures, and each other. James was a member of the Hinton Church of Christ, where he taught classes, led thoughtful prayers, served communion, and enjoyed theological debate. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his infant son William, who died at birth. He is survived by: his wife Anne Gill of Hinton, who stood by him always; his children Ashleigh Gill and her fiancé Chris Clark of Murfreesboro, Amanda Bennett and her husband Scott of Hinton, John Gill and his wife Kate of Hinton, Shawn Gill and his fiancé Savannah Lowe of Princeton, and Adam Gill of Huntington; his sister Bernice Arbutus Allen and her husband David of St. Albans; adored grandchildren Frederick Gill, Kayley Davis, Adalyn Gill, and Natalie Bennett of Hinton; and his uncle Daniel Gill of Hinton. He is also survived by many dear friends and relations who will honor his memory. He loved them with all his heart. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P. M. on Saturday, November 25th at the Hinton Church of Christ, with Minister Walter Dekle officiating. Burial will follow in the Upland Cemetery near Hinton. Viewing will be held one hour prior to services. John and Shawn Gill, Freddy Gill, Scott Bennett, Chris Clark, Doug Wills, and Ray Gill will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jake Allen, David Allen, Daniel Gill, Steve Richmond, Louis Bragg, Gary Browning, Jim Campbell, Jerry Aldridge, Billy Griffith, Darel Chewning, and Ronson Shultz. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hinton Church of Christ.Show more

Steven Pulliam

Steven Pulliam

Age - 67

November 2, 2023

Steven Edward Pulliam, 67, of True, WV passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at The Inn at Greystone Village. Following a year's struggle with cancer, he left this earth for his heavenly home surrounded by his immediate family and caring staff. Steve was born on June 12, 1956 in Long Beach, California to the late Connie Dell Anderson Pulliam and Paul E. Pulliam. Also preceded in death were Steve's younger brother, Larry Wayne Pulliam and beloved brother-in-law, Brian Sherry from Georgetown, MA. His mother relocated the young family to Virginia where she met and married Eddie Wrenn of Norfolk. Eddie, who also preceded Steve in death, raised Steve and younger brother, Larry as his own sons. Steve attended and graduated from Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, despite his proclivity towards mischief versus studies. During this time, Steve attended several church dances at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk where he met his future wife of 48 years, Camella Marie Langlois. They married in June of 1975, disrupting his time at Virginia Tech's School of Engineering but creating an opportunity to learn the family's business in automobile transmissions. Eventually, Steve opened several successful businesses of his own in Norfolk, VA and two in North Carolina. Steve was widely known for his knowledge and trouble-shooting abilities in the field, even providing design changes to General Motors and Ford. As his family grew with the birth of a much-loved daughter and son, Heather and Billy, his free time became more limited. But, when able, he loved fishing out on the Chesapeake Bay, building and woodworking, long weekend road trips with Cam and the children, his beloved Redskins, and visiting new restaurants. Many years later, Steve purchased land in West Virginia so the couple could build their dream log home in the mountains for enjoyment and future retirement. Steve and late friend, Kurt German, completed all the interior design and woodworking in the home, including the doors that Steve made in his woodworking shop. Steve is survived by the couple's two children, Heather Marie Pulliam, and husband Brian Turner, William (Billy) Joseph Pulliam, and beloved granddaughter, Lily Marie Wallace, all of Christiansburg, VA. His very special cousins; Charlotte Taylor of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Jack Anderson and family of Fairbanks, AK, and beloved aunt, Louise Booth of Norfolk, Va. He is also survived by his wife's large family; Teresa Langlois Davis and husband, Roland; Katherine Langlois Danner and husband, Wayne from Chesapeake, VA; Paulette Langlois Culp and husband, Jamie of Tampa, FL; John Riggs Langlois, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; Annette Sherry of Newburyport, MA; Christine Langlois Santoni and husband, Tom from Virginia Beach, VA. , nineteen nieces and nephews, twelve great-nieces and nephews, one great-great nephew, and many long-time friends. Cremation services have been provided by Pivont Funeral Home. Catholic Mass and Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Melanoma Cancer Society. Age - 88

Nancy Jane Bolling Shrader, age 88, of Beech Run, Hinton, WV passed away at Bowers Hospice House on October 18, 2023 following a long illness. Born on July 28, 1935 in Hinton, WV, Nancy was the daughter of the late Gilbert A. and Opal Hogan Bolling. She lived her younger years on Freezeland Mountain until her family moved to Hinton in the late 1940's. Nancy was blessed to be born second in a family of seven children. Her siblings include Mary Frances "Frankie" Bolling Willey, Patricia Ann "Patty" Bolling Lindsay, Ida B. "Topsy" Bolling Stennett, Valeria J. Bolling O'Neal, Linda Gail Bolling Lilly, and Gilbert A. , Jr. "Buddy/Gil" Bolling. Upon graduating in 1953 from Hinton High School, her next move was marrying the love of her life, Marvin Jack Shrader, Sr. and living the rest of her life on Beech Run near Hinton. She and Marvin were happily married for forty eight years until his passing in 2001. There was never a more devoted, loving couple than "Nannie" and "Poppy" as they were called by their 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Nancy always enjoyed music, and she and Marvin were members of the Nimitz Senior Citizens Choir for several years. She enjoyed listening to country and gospel music. After spending most of her life as a Baptist, Nancy found her true home as a Methodist when she became a member of the Hinton First United Methodist Church. She served as the treasurer for the United Methodist Women for many years. Whenever there was a church dinner, Nancy would be asked to make her one of a kind deviled eggs that pleased everyone. Nancy was a carbon copy of her mother, Opal. They shared the same intelligence, sense of humor, love of children, and dedication to family. Their love of cooking was evident on a daily basis. Whenever any unexpected guest arrived, there would always be plenty to eat that magically appeared on the table. Like her mother, Nancy was a wonderful cook and homemaker. She was always making something delicious for the family, church, or neighbors. Her homemade fried pies, mouthwatering biscuits, applesauce raisin cakes, and much more made everyone smile. She kept her cookie jar full of butter "Yes/No" cookies for the grandkids and was always ready for an impromptu tea party with the young ones. All the grandkids and great-grandkids loved "Nannie" so much, and she made every single one feel very special. Nancy spent many years as a housewife but also worked in the community. Together with her husband Marvin she operated the Shrader Grocery and Bait Store on Beech Run for many years. She spent several years working at Hinton Floral, Cox's Department Store, and the Hinton Subway. Wherever she worked she gave 110% and was a valued friend and employee. Besides her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Jack Shrader, Sr. , and son, Marvin Jack "Jackie" Shrader, Jr. , sisters: "Frankie" Willey and Patty Lindsay. The family would like to thank the Summers County Hospital staff for their wonderful care of Mom. Dr. Nehal Patel, Dr. Hirishi Patel, and Sara Cales, PA were the most professional, loving, and caring medical professionals that anyone could hope for. The nursing staff and physical therapy staff were all wonderful care givers and special friends to Mom. These special individuals were the reason Mom was able to spend her last years with comfort and dignity. The family would also like to thank the staffs of Hospice of Southern WV and Bowers Hospice House for their dedication to making Mom's final days much easier for her. Their care and support were truly exceptional. A celebration of life will be held at the Hinton First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Visitation will be at 12:00 P. M. and the service is scheduled for 1:00 P. M. with Dr. Rev. John Sauvage and Rev. Mark Shrader officiating. Pall bearers will be grandsons and nephews.
