Burlington Ralph Eugene Squires, 74 of Burlington passed away on September 9, 2023, peacefully in his sleep. Ralph was born in Alamance County on August 28, 1949, a son of the late Harvey Eugene Squires and Carlene Webster Squires. After graduating from Eastern Alamance High School in 1967, he pursued a career in tobacco farming and logging. His hobbies included racing as a teenager and young adult continuing to enjoy watching go-kart racing and attending NASCAR races. Ralph never met a stranger, his smile and good spirit will live on in his only surviving daughter Amanda, grandchildren: Christopher Eugene Maynard, Mackenzie Rose Hutcherson and Kevin Alexander Maynard, Jr. Sister Gena Squires and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving partner Gail Diane Walker and his daughter Nichole Ellen as well as his sister Vanessa Keck. A Special Thanks to his loving caregivers, son in law Kevin Maynard, Sr. , and Sandra Cates. He adored both of you. A celebration of life gathering will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Omega Funeral Service & Crematory Chapel. Interment will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Marguerite Glover Garner, 79, of Burlington, NC passed away on Thursday, November 30th, 2023 following a year-long illness. Marguerite was born in Jefferson County, GA; one of fourteen siblings blessed to the late Nelson Glover and the late Bessie May Glover. Following her retirement from Kayser Roth Hosiery in Burlington, Marguerite enjoyed traveling the US, taking many RV trips and spending time with family visiting the beaches of North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. She also enjoyed spending time at her FL home with many friends. In addition to her parents, Marguerite was preceded in death by sisters Lynette Pullman Meeks, Annette Peavy, Virginia Fox and Marian Teuton. Marguerite is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Jerry Garner; sons Dean Garner (Diane) of Burlington, NC and Michael Garner (Emme) of Lake Mary, FL; granddaughters, Molly Garner, Kerry Garner, and Heather Allred; great grandson, Garner Allred; siblings, Evelyn Petrea, Betty Brooks, Charles Glover, Mickey Rudolph, Janice Richardson, Marinelle Thomas, Glenda Shields, Danny Glover, Beth Thomas. A memorial service will be held at Lowe Funeral Home in Burlington, NC on December 9th, 2023 at 11 AM. Reverend John Shields will officiate. Robert Lewis Montgomery September 7, 1928 - November 23, 2023 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert Lewis Montgomery, known as Bob, who departed this life at the age of 95 years old. Born on September 7, 1928 in Lewiston, Pennsylvania to Walter and Esther Montgomery, Bob spent his early years in the Washington D. C. area, where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Chevy Chase, Maryland. His siblings were his brother Bud and sister Joanne. He was active in the Boy Scouts, where he participated in ceremonies at the White House, and he later joined the Junior ROTC, standing along Pennsylvania Avenue for FDR's funeral procession. Three days after graduating from High School, at age 17 he joined the Army. After boot camp he shipped from the Pittsburg, California Naval base to Yokohama, Japan and was stationed in Tokyo. He was posted at the Dai-ichi Building and served on General Douglas MacArthur's Honor Guard during the occupation of Japan, a great source of pride for him. After serving in the military, Bob Montgomery graduated in 1951 from Syracuse University, where he excelled as a Psychology major and was a proud member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Bob went on to pursue a career in business, beginning with a short stint at Eastern Airlines. He then launched his career at Standard Register Corporation where he stayed for 14 years, before becoming President of two divisions at Dymo Corporation. He answered the entrepreneurial bug mid-career when he moved from Hingham, Massachusetts to Ormond Beach, Florida to open a Sir Speedy printing shop before ultimately moving into commercial and residential real estate, with which he had considerable success. He earned respect as a businessman and community leader, rising to become President of the Daytona Beach chapter of the Kiwanis Club. Bob and his wife Becky were members at First Presbyterian Church, Daytona Beach, where Bob faithfully served as a deacon for over four decades. After spending 47 years in Florida, Bob Montgomery spent his final years at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, North Carolina and joined Springwood Presbyterian Church. Bob is survived by his wife Becky, former spouse Marti King, his sons Richard, Howard (Joy Taylor) and Eric (Sari Bodi) and his stepchildren Marybeth Asher-Lawson (Scott Lawson) and Baron Asher (Tina), as well as grandchildren Alexis, Ming, and Luke Montgomery, Grace Lawson and Cami Asher. Bob Montgomery loved college and professional sports, particularly golf and his beloved Atlanta Braves. He was a lifelong golfer, tennis player, cyclist and skier as well as being an avid reader. He loved high quality automobiles and kept them (and his garage) in showroom condition, 365 days a year. Bob Montgomery will be remembered for his 45-year love affair with his wife Becky, from whom he was inseparable, and his pride in his extended family's accomplishments. He was known for his love of Becky's fine cooking and spending time with his friends and family. As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember him as a symbol of the Greatest Generation, who answered the call of duty and afterwards built an admirable family life and career. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 10:30am at Springwood Presbyterian Church, Burlington, NC; followed by interment in the Church Cemetery. Sulenny Villa Teran, a beloved daughter, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on November 28, 2023. She was born on April 4, 1998, in the Dominican Republic. Sulenny's life was filled with love, kindness, and a vibrant spirit that touched the lives of those around her. Sulenny's caring and nurturing nature made her a pillar of support for her family and friends. She had a joyful and warm spirit that brought comfort to anyone who crossed her path. Her unconditional love and dedication to her loved ones made them feel cherished and valued. An incredibly creative soul, Sulenny had a passion for decorating and arts and crafts. She had a unique talent for transforming spaces into beautiful havens filled with warmth and creativity. Her attention to detail and artistic eye were truly remarkable. Sulenny poured her heart into every project she took on. She had a special fondness for turtles and was eagerly looking forward to adopting a dachshund puppy. Sulenny also cherished her role as an aunt and godmother to her nephew. She embraced this title with boundless affection and showered him with laughter, guidance, and unlimited treats. Their bond was one filled with pure joy and countless cherished memories. Ruby Mercer Williams Thorpe, age 88, passed away peacefully at Pittsboro Christian Village on November 28, 2023 and is now at home in Heaven. Born in Wilson County, Ruby was the daughter of the late Thomas Byard Mercer and Iva Worrell Mercer. She was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Rock Ridge High School. A few years later, she married Julius Williams and they relocated to Durham, NC, eventually establishing their home in Wellons Village, where they raised their two sons. Ruby was a stay home mom until the death of her first husband, Julius. Twelve years later, she met and married her second husband, Sam Thorpe; which led to her retiring from Royal Home Fashions in Durham. Ruby was a devoted Christian and served the Lord for many years at the Gospel Center and Grove Park Chapel. After 50 plus years of living in Durham, Ruby and her late husband, Sam, became residents of Pittsboro Christian Village in Pittsboro, NC; where they both continued to serve the Lord until their deaths. Ruby will be remembered for her love for the Lord, faithfulness to her church, a servant to others, her love of family and her love of flowers. She leaves behind a wonderful legacy and was a great example to all who knew her as someone who truly lived life in service to God and others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Julius Williams; second husband, Samuel Thorpe, Sr. ; sisters, Isadore Baker and Helen Ruth Page; brothers, William Mercer and Roney Mercer; and a very special friend, Samuel Taylor. She is survived by three sisters, Louise Roberts, Faye Tew and Linda Lamm (Buck); her sons, Larry Williams (Shawna) and Allan Williams (Darlene); "adopted" son, Lee Gardner (Cindi); granddaughter, Kendall Sukopp (Alex) and grandson, Logan Williams (Adriane); step grandson, John Ricker (Julia); step granddaughter, Katie Kaufman; step great grandson, Moses Alexander; step son, Samuel Thorpe, Jr. (Barbara), step daughter Marilyn Olson (Fred); and many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren in the Thorpe Family. Ruby Williams Thorpe will be laid to rest in a private family graveside service at Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, NC. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Bible Baptist Church, 2047 Gate Two Rd, Creedmoor, NC 27522. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:15 pm. The service will be officiated by Senior Pastor Jimmy Hall of Bible Baptist Church and Senior Pastor Dale Brooks of Grove Park Chapel. Thomas Melcon Long was born February 2, 1950 to the late Thomas and Edith Long in Burlington, NC. Affectionately known as "Mel", he grew up in a home that was full of music and the arts with a strong commitment to community. Mel was a blessed child of God whose life gave Light to many. He attended First Baptist Church of Apple Street where he was a member of the junior choir. His early years were spent in the Burlington school system as a sports and music enthusiast. He graduated from Jordan Sellars High School in 1968. He was a member of the band, the choir, the football team, the basketball team, and excelled on the tennis team. His leadership skill was demonstrated by his participation in the Student Council and various extracurricular organizations. His musical skill was demonstrated in his ability to sing and his ability to play several instruments - clarinet, saxophone, and guitar. Mel was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America beginning with Cub Scouts and advancing to earning the highest distinction of Eagle Scout. He was a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. He attended A&T State University where he was a member of the marching band. He was a member of 5 Miles Out, an R&B band where he co-wrote music and performed locally. Professionally, Mel followed in the footsteps of his father Thomas Long, Jr. in the field of plumbing. Mel was a family man, and was blessed by God with 2 children. He was preceded in death by his son Thomas M. Long, Jr. ("Pookey") who will greet him as he comes home. He is survived by his daughter Terri M. Long Blackwell (Gregory) of Atlanta GA. His legacy continues as he is survived by two grandchildren - Gregory T. Blackwell and Myi O. Long of Atlanta GA. Two siblings - William S. Long ("Stevie") of Burlington, NC and Deborah Long Chambers (Winston) of Dallas, TX also survive to cherish his memory. Precious, loving memories are shared by all whose life he blessed: a host of maternal and paternal cousins from coast to coast; close friends; and business associates.
