Funeral services for Hilton Ray Hammons will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 3:00 pm at Red Top Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Red Top Union Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Newton County Funeral Home. Bro. James Shoemaker and Bro. Bobby Boyles will officiate. Mrs. Jeralyn Perkins and Mrs. Michelle Rushing will provide the music. Mr. Hammons was born Tuesday, January 18, 1948, in Smith County, MS to R.B. and Ruby Lee Bailey Hammons. He and his wife, Nancy C. (Bassett) Hammons were married for 56 years. They owned Countryside Camper Sales and Services in Forest, MS for 21 years. Prior to that they had a farm in Lake, MS where they raised two daughters. He enjoyed attending church, family, camping, woodworking, and loved to talk. He passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at the MS Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. B. and Ruby Lee Bailey Hammons and two brothers, Charles Hammons and Rayford Hammons.Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bassett Hammons of Forest, MS; two daughters, Jan Hollingsworth (Steven) of Lake, MS and Patricia Hill (Daniel) of Forest, MS; one brother, Mitchell Hammons (Linda) of Pineville, MS; two sisters, Annie Boykin of Raleigh, MS and Judy Adcock of Carthage, MS; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight nephews and eleven nieces.Pallbearers will be Terry Hammons, Timmy Hammons, Jamie Smith, Bruce Smith, Danny Smith, Elvis Shaw, Roger Bell, and Gary Bell. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Red Top Union Baptist Church, and on Friday beginning at 1:00 pm and continue until service time. Harrison Eugene “Gene” Aust, 87, of Hattiesburg, MS, passed away on February 15, 2024, at Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson, MS. He was born on October 15, 1936, to Claude and Iola Aust in Binnsville, MS. Gene grew up on a family farm in Binnsville, MS. His father signed for him to enter the U.S. navy at the age of 17. Upon returning home after four years of naval service, Gene enrolled at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba , MS , with the aid of the GI Bill. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, having earned B.S, M.S, and Specialists degrees over the years. In later years, he was just a dissertation away from obtaining his Ph.D. from Southern Miss. Gene began his work career in at Ocean Springs High School as a Vocational Instructor in the 1960s. From there he went on to work for Standard Oil and Gulfport High School before retiring from Mississippi Power Company in Gulfport, MS. Gene moved to Hattiesburg, MS in 2000 to live near his daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. He loved God, his family, his country, and the great outdoors. Gene was known to be devout patriot giving generously to Wounded Warriors and various other Christian organizations. He was a great friend to all and will be missed by many. We rejoice with the knowledge that Gene is now in the presence of our Lord. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; Claude and Iola Aust: Siblings; Margaret Kemp (Joe), Wallace Maurice Aust (Maratha Joe), Limuel Hunt Aust (Phyllis), and Vashti Marie Aust. He is survived by his daughter Tara (Greg) Courtney; grandchildren: Lauren Catheryne Courtney (New Orleans) and Austin Gregory Courtney (Jillian Morison); great grandchild: Charlotte Elisabeth Courtney; three siblings: Martha Grace Aust Flemister (Steve), Mary Elouise McConville (Bill), Larry Aust (Frances); along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Cheryl Frazier Lyon, age 75, passed away peacefully at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 17, 2024. She was born on July 10th, 1948, in Jackson to Robert Carlton Frazier and Evelyn Felts Frazier. She was raised in Clinton, MS, and graduated from Clinton High School in 1966. She then attended what is now known as the University of Memphis. In 1979, she married George Davis Lyon Jr. MD, and they began their life together in the Jackson Metro area. With three children in tow, the family moved to Starkville, MS in 1990 where she lived for the next 30 years. Besides being a second mother to many of her children’s friends, she was a fixture at her children’s horse shows, basketball games, golf tournaments, and any other activity that involved her children. Cheryl served as President of the Junior Auxiliary of Starkville and became a Life Member. One of her proudest accomplishments as President was the publication of the first edition of Bully’s Best Bites Cookbook. Cheryl was adept at cultivating long-lasting friendships. She truly treasured her many close relationships and always enjoyed plans to dine and shop with her lady friends. Having married a Mississippi State graduate and being the proud mother to 3 MSU graduates, she was always proud to wear maroon and white as well as ring those cowbells! Following the death of her husband, she moved to Madison, MS in 2020 to be closer to her daughter and family. Cheryl’s ability to cultivate friendships continued after her move. She was invited to join the Recess Luncheon Club in Jackson, MS which broadened her circle of friends. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brother Phillip Frazier. Cheryl leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. She is survived by her children, David Manning Lyon (Brooke), Anna Lyon Killingsworth (Ryan) and George Maxwell Lyon (Cameron) and her beloved grandchildren Kate Killingsworth, Davis and Grant Lyon, and Ivy Lyon. She is also survived by her brother Eric Frazier, her aunt Dorothy Shanks, her sisters in law Catherine Lyon Chernecky and Janice Virden, her nieces Bethany and AJ Frazier, and many loving cousins. The visitation will be held at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 10:00-12:00, followed by a graveside service at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville. The family would like to thank the caregivers from HomeWell Care Services of Madison who helped tremendously over the final few weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Cheryl’s favorite charity, Oktibbeha County Humane Society.

Rodgers Sr and Jewell Gladney Rodgers. A longtime resident of Jackson, she retired from Deposit Guaranty National Bank, where she worked in loan administration. A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jackson, where she was a member of the Senor Adults Sunday School Class.Mrs. Oswalt enjoyed reading and cherished spending time with her family.Along with her parents, Charles S. Rodgers Sr and Jewell Gladney Rodgers, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Annette Oswalt Dyer and a brother, Charles S. Rodgers, Jr.She is survived by a son, Don Oswalt of Jackson, and many loving family members.
