Polly Downs Johnson passed away on Friday, October 6th, 2023. Polly was preceded in death by her parents, James Edgar Downs and Beulah Montgomery Downs; brothers, J. E. (Sue) Downs, Wesley Downs, Charles Downs, and sister, Linda (Johnny) Thompson. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Donald Ray Johnson; a son, Lloyd Alton (Debbie) Johnson; two daughters, Beverly (Jeff) Carroll, and Daphne Smith; one brother, John Edward Downs; three sisters, Sue Varner, Martha Shiver, and Madgelene Manning, and sisters-in-law Emma Jean Thrower, and Cindy Downs; four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was very involved with her church and with her community and devoted to her family. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9, 2023 from 10-11a. m. with the funeral service at Evangel Temple in Montgomery, at 11 a. m. with Minister Michael Rippy officiating. Burial will be at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery (Lightwood Community, Elmore County. ) with Gassett Funeral Home of Wetumpka directing. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Evangel Temple or MAPS, 3975 Vaughn Road, Montgomery, AL 36106

Susan Faye Butler Phillips, loving wife and mother, went to be with the Lord on December 6, 2023 at the age of sixty-eight. The family will receive friends, Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 1:00 p. m. with the funeral service at 3:00 p. m. at Gassett Funeral Home Chapel with Ben Nobles officiating. Burial will be at Wetumpka City Cemetery with Gassett Funeral Home of Wetumpka directing. She is preceded in death by her father, Floyd H. Butler and mother Evelyne Shirley Butler. She is survived by her husband Wiley D. Phillips; daughter Anna Lauren Phillips Pippin (Ryan); stepson Bradley Daniel Phillips (Cherry); siblings Amy Jane Butler Windham (Ronnie), Brenda Lee Butler Patton; grandchildren Norah Pippin, Katie Phillips, Addie Phillips, and Carleigh Nimm. Susan was born on October 20,1955 in Georgia. She grew up in the community of Ellerslie, Georgia where she discovered her love for music and the piano at the tender age of five. In her middle school years, she moved with her family to Wetumpka, Alabama where she continued her education and graduated from Wetumpka High School in 1973. She moved on to study music at Troy University and earned her bachelor's degree in music education. As an accomplished pianist, music director, and compassionate minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Susan went on to full-time ministry as a choral director and youth minister in several churches in the late 1970's and 1980's. This included time at Chickasaw United Methodist Church, Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, and Destin United Methodist Church. In 1988, Susan chose to return to her roots and reside in Wetumpka once again. She began working as an underwriter for Alfa insurance in Montgomery, Alabama. During this time, she met her loving husband of thirty-three years, Wiley Phillips. On October 2, 1991, Susan and Wiley welcomed their daughter Anna Lauren Phillips. Also, Susan continued her ministry in music by becoming the pianist at several churches in the Wetumpka area most notably Santuck Baptist Church for over a decade. Pallbearers will be Bradley Phillips, David Windham, Derek Patton, Monroe Black, Pete Anderson, and Ryan Pippin.
