Alvin Grahn

Alvin Grahn

Age - 78

December 8, 2023

Alvin (Bill) William Grahn was born in San Diego, California on April 19, 1945, to Alvin Waldemar Grahn and Norma Jean Grahn. He was the second born of four children. Bill's father was in the Navy and the family had moved to many Navy bases during his father's 20 years of service. Bill's most memorable move was to the Philippines, when his Mom traveled across the ocean with four young children. At this time, Bill was six, his brother was seven, his sister was one and a half and his youngest sister was only 9 months old. They were on a ship for 30 days. He called his Mom a "Super Mom'' for making this voyage alone. The two years Bill spent in the Philippines were some of his fondest childhood memories with his brother Vic. Upon their return to the States, he lived in Hayward, California, until his father retired. Then his family moved to Clackamas, Oregon, where his father's family had relocated from Minnesota. Bill played for the Clackamas High School football team as an offensive and defensive tackle. He was known for being lean and mean on the field. After working a year, following high school, Bill decided to join the Navy where he served as an aircraft mechanic. After 4 years in the Navy, he went to school at Portland Community College studying Engineering and Drafting. He used his degree working in the PGE Engineering Department before eventually taking a position in his father in law's injection molding company. After 20 years in the industry he opened his own company. He ran a successful business, but when times got hard he took a job with the TSA to keep things going. He enjoyed this job but was able to go back to the business full time after two years. He continuously built the company and was able to sell it and head towards retirement. Bill was a family man. He was a big tease with an even bigger heart. He enjoyed taking his family on many outings; hiking, camping, swimming, skiing, and anything his kids or grandkids wanted to do. He always loved sports. He spent endless hours coaching his daughters in their youth, on the sidelines during their games as they grew, and in the bleachers watching his grandchildren participate in their various sports and activities. Bill and Kathy enjoyed going to their cabin on the Salmon River. They enjoyed it even more when their family would join them. From playing games to watching the river, it was always a wonderful time spent together. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife Kathy of 52 years. Anyone who spent any time with them could see the deep love and friendship they shared. He is also survived by his two daughters; Tracy Bariao-Arce and Julie Hicks, his son in laws; Gaya Bariao-Arce and Butch Hicks, his grandchildren; Kyle, Katie, Olivia, and Bo. Bill is also survived by his brother Vic, Sister Robyn and Sister Rosanna. Family was everything to him, as were his life long friends. Please remember him with love. A service and reception will be held in his honor at Mount Scott Funeral Home (4205 SE 59th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97202) Friday December 15th at 1:00 PM.Show more

Verna Kuhn

Verna Kuhn

Age - 95

December 6, 2023

On February 21, 1928 Verna Mae was born in Windsor, Colorado, the firstborn of parents William and Pauline Eckhardt. She was later joined by 2 sisters and a brother. After the family moved to Wheatland, Wyoming to farm, Verna attended a one-room country school through the 4th grade until farming took them back to Colorado for several years. In 1944, after 2 years of having their sugar beet crop destroyed by hail, the family packed their belongings and moved to Portland, Oregon where other relatives lived. Verna's spiritual journey followed shortly after when she accepted Jesus as her Savior--a journey that would last her lifetime, and on into eternity. True to their Volga German heritage, Verna's family attended the 2nd German Congregational Church. Her high school years were spent at Commerce High School (now Cleveland), graduating in January, 1947. Verna was employed at Meier and Frank's Tea Room, but later accepted a job offer from the manager of the Shoe Repair Department, Mr. Alex Kuhn, to clerk for him. Since they attended the same church and their families were friends, it wasn't long before Verna began dating the boss' son, Alfred. Along with working part-time, she attended Multnomah School of the Bible full time. The romance bloomed into marriage on November 20, 1949, and into their marriage they welcomed three children: Patti, Nancy and David. Al and Verna remained faithful to the Lord and to one another for over 74 years! Verna's life was devoted to serving the Lord and her family. Most of her years were spent as a homemaker, lovingly caring for her husband and children. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening and was a gracious and welcoming hostess to both family and friends. After Al retired, they enjoyed traveling with friends on cruises, as well as to Hawaii and Europe and many trips in their RV. Verna's devotion to the Lord was evident in the way their home was opened every Monday to neighborhood children to attend a weekly Bible Club to learn about Jesus. She faithfully prepared snacks and welcomed the children for 26 years! Their basement was full (up to 49!) of children coming to hear Bible stories, sing and memorize Scripture. Many came to faith in Jesus as Savior, some continuing to service in lifelong ministry. Verna's passion was to see children come to know Jesus--both in her own family and beyond, a passion nurtured by prayer. This is the legacy she leaves. Verna was an active, long-time member of Central Bible Church, and in recent years at Gateway (Baptist) Church. Following a stroke on November 18th, Verna received care from Hospice and her family before passing on to her heavenly home on December 1st. Verna is survived by her devoted husband Al; her children, Patti (Stan) Birman; Nancy (Gordy) Whipps, and Dave (Karen) Kuhn; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Edna and Dorothy, and brother Robert. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Camp Morrow, 79551 Morrow Rd. Raymond Lee

Raymond Lee

Age - 82

December 6, 2023

Raymond Elvin Lee, 82, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on November 30, 2023. He was born on April 7, 1941, in St. Helens, Oregon, to Lyle and Gladys Lee. Raymond, known to his loved ones as a talkative and story-telling man, he took his time saying his goodbyes at the end of gatherings and parties. He was also known for his love of cooking (and eating!). He took pride in his culinary skills and enjoyed preparing meals for his family and friends. Raymond's patriotism shone through, and he was a loving and proud uncle to his nieces and nephews. In addition to his love for cooking, Raymond was a skilled craftsman and fisherman. He spent countless hours fishing along the Willamette River, even crafting his own fishing poles. His expertise in fishing often resulted in an abundance of fish, to the point where his wife, Arleen, grew tired of it. Raymond also enjoyed giving old furniture new life and took great pride in rebuilding a 1972 Hot Rod Chevrolet truck, which he painted in Black Cherry. Raymond served in the Marine Corps for six years and held deep respect for his fellow Marines. He cherished the memories and experiences he gained during his time in the military. In 1960, he met the love of his life, Arleen, through her brother, and they married in a small ceremony in Beaverton in 1962. Throughout his life, Raymond worked as a switchman for the railroad until 1973. After taking a break from work, he joined Baxter's Auto Supply store, where he dedicated his time and skills. Raymond joined St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Tigard in the late 90s, finding solace and community in his faith. He valued his time spent at the church and the connections he made with fellow parishioners. In memory of Raymond Lee, contributions can be made to Wounded Warriors, an organization that supports veterans and their families. Raymond will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, love for storytelling, and dedication to his family.Show more
