Philip Jearld Offenbacker, 85, of Elkton, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023 at Harrisonburg Health Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 24, 1937 in Elkton and was the son of the late Fred Mack and Gracie Frances Breeden Offenbacker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Fred and Ray Lee Offenbacker; sister, Ruby Robinson, as well as numerous half siblings. Philip was a truck driver for Oakland Dairy Farm for 25 years before retiring. He loved watching wrestling and western movies. He was a big fan of the late Dale Earnhardt and loved Nascar. He never complained about anything. Philip was a humble and kind man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his soulmate, Reba Breeden; daughter, Dawn Marie Offenbacker; nephews, Robert, Joe, David, Larry Hensley, Bobby Bush; sisters, Betty Hensley, Violet Higgins; sister-in-law, Janet Offenbacker. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p. m. , Friday, September 15, 2023 at Elk Run Cemetery with Pastor John Crawford officiating. ObituaryWilliam A. "Bill" Vigar, Ret. U. S. Army CW4, 87, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Saturday December 2, 2023 at Bellaire at Stoneport in Harrisonburg. Mr. Vigar was born on December 22, 1935 in McGaheysville and was a son of the late Lewis Andrew and Edith Virginia (Warble) Vigar. He excelled in sports at Montevideo and Harrisonburg during his school years. He later earned enough money to take flying lessons at Hartman Airfield on Chicago Ave. Mr. Vigar began his military career in 1953, serving with both the Virginia National Guard and the Virginia U. S. Army Reserve until 1958. In August of 1958, he entered Active Federal Service. During the succeeding seven years, he served with distinction while earning the rank of SGT (E-5), the EIB and completing the Airborne and Ranger Qualification Courses. During this period, SGT Vigar served with several airborne units, including the 503rd Battle Group, and the 504th and 509th Airborne Battalions. In 1965 Mr. Vigar began his aviation career by completing the Warrant Officer Fixed Wing Qualification Course. After Fort Rucker, he reported for duty at Fort Bragg, for a tour as a Pilot with the 69th Aviation Company, XVIII ABN Corps. He was subsequently selected as a Flight Instructor at Fort Rucker before departing for the first of two combat assignments in the Republic of Vietnam. His second combat assignment was a unique duty, flying US Navy P2B Neptune Aircraft to support the military intelligence gathering effort. Upon his return to Fort Rucker, Mr. Vigar served as an Instructor Pilot and was instrumental in the initial development of the World-Wide Aviation Standardization Program which today is known as the Department of Evaluation and Standardization (DES). Mr. Vigar's following assignment was to HQ U. S. Army Communications Command as an Air Traffic Control Technician. This marked the first time an aviation warrant officer was selected to service in a Principal Air Traffic Control Staff assignment. The following PCS send Mr. Vigar back to Europe, with the United States European Command Flight Detachment, as a pilot and operations officer. His responsibilities included the travel and scheduling arrangements for all Ambassadors, Dignitaries, and VIP's visiting Europe. For his final assignment, Mr. Vigar returned to Fort Bragg, and was assigned to the Airborne Board Aviation Section. As the Board's senior aviator, Mr. Vigar provided expert information on aviation operations, and served as the focal point for aviation support on tests. He has also been involved in classified special operations and was instrumental in supporting pre-deployment testing for Operation Urgent Fury. Mr. Vigar has devoted a long and illustrious career to Army Aviation, and has accumulated over 14,000 accident-free flying hours. Having served with distinction for over 31 years, Mr. Vigar has been awarded Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Aviator Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star, Air Medal with 64 clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals, and several other individual awards. After retiring in 1984, Mr. Vigar returned to the Valley and continued his aviation career, flying for Hensen Airline and Tri-Star Aviation. From 1988 through 1997, Bill went back to flying for the Department of Defense out of Langly Air Force Base. Upon his second retirement, Bill again, returned to the Valley and served as an officer for the Rion-Bowman VFW Post #632, AmVets, Shenandoah Valley Eagles #4150. He was a member of Rockingham Union Lodge #27 AF&AM. He was also a member of the Valley Shrine Club. Bill was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, and a recipient of his 50-year pin from Wiregrass Shrine Club in Dothan, Alabama. Mr. Vigar is survived by his wife, Debbie (Taylor) Vigar. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, Steve Vigar of Bridgewater, Barry Vigar and wife Susan of Seneca, SC, Stephanie Hummel of Sangersville, Eric Hummel and wife Nikki of Bridgewater; his former wife, Mobley Padilla; grandchildren, Ryan Vigar and wife Heather of Bridgewater, Trent Vigar and wife Marissa of Atlantic, GA; and great-grandchildren, Cam-Ron Vigar, Laurel Vigar, and Brooke Vigar. Mr. Vigar was also preceded in death by a son, William A. "Rocky" Vigar, Jr. The funeral service will be held on Saturday December 9, 2023 at 11 AM at the Harrisonburg Chapel of Kyger Funeral Homes, with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial with military rites by the United States Army will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 8, 2023 from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home. Patricia Lam "Pat" Hensley, 71, of Elkton, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Mrs. Hensley was born November 28, 1952, in the Naked Creek area of Page County, to the late Leo V. and Christine Samuels Lam. Pat graduated from Elkton High School in 1971, and participated in athletics while also excelling in academics. On July 3, 1971, she married Lowell R. Hensley at Mt. Olivet Church in McGaheysville, Virginia. Mrs. Hensley worked for Rockingham County Public Schools for over 30 years, and retired from Elkton Elementary School. She was a member of The Church of Solsburg for over 50 years. Pat is survived by her beloved husband of over 52 years, Lowell Hensley; son, Scott "Pistol" Hensley and wife, Kim; grandchildren, to which she cherished, Madi Steele and husband, Nick, Samantha "Sam" Hensley, all of Elkton; sisters, Carolyn Deane and husband, David, of Stanardsville, Debbie Hammer and husband, Russell; brother, Timothy "Sawbuck" Lam and wife, Beverly; brother-in-law, Steven "Brent" Hensley, all of Elkton; numerous nephews and special friend, Cynthia Zodda. Daphne "Hope" Scripture passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, November 25, 2023, after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Hope was a devoted Christian, a much-loved mother and grandmother and a steadfast friend to those she held dear. Hope was born on May 2, 1947, in Berea, Kentucky. She was raised in Ashton, Maryland and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1965. She attended the University of Maryland, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education. After college she captured the attention of the world of modeling, becoming Miss Washington, D. C. , and participating in the Miss USA Pageant. Her passion for teaching led her to inspire young minds at Harmony Hills in Aspen Hill, Maryland, and Woodstock, Virginia, later serving as a substitute teacher in Harrisonburg City Schools. Her thirst for knowledge drove her to James Madison University, where she initially pursued a master's in counseling before delving into Real Estate Law, becoming a licensed Real Estate agent and Broker at Coldwell Banker Funkhouser Realty in Virginia. Hope was not only an educator but an active participant in community service. A proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as the Historian in 2019. Recognized with the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonel, she was an active member of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women and the Junior Women's Club. She was an esteemed member of various Committees where she held positions of honor and responsibility, leaving a mark on the communities she touched. Her zest for life was mirrored in her love for travel, exploring countries across the globe including New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, China, Russia, Arctic Circle and Europe. She created cherished memories alongside her dear friends and instilled in her daughters a love for travel and adventure. She was preceded in death by her late husband, William Hugh Baber, III and her mother Mary Ann Davis Durnell. Hope leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her daughters Sarah Scripture Sawyer, Laura Hope Scripture and husband Brooke Van Dusen, and her former husband and father of her daughters, Jared Standish Scripture. Her six grandchildren, Miles, Gage, Fielding, Hayes, Tyler Hope, and Colton were the lights of her life. Her most adored times involved spending time with her grandchildren. She delighted in watching them golf, swim and play tennis at Spotswood Country Club. At home she would join them in a lively game of pickleball, a swim in the pool, and tending to her garden. She also took time to teach them the intricate game of bridge. Her grandchildren remember her fondly for her invaluable guidance and gifts of virtue. A Celebration of Hope's Life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 11 a. m. , at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, officiated by Reverend Joseph Butler and Dr. John Sloop. Dennis Lee Reamy, born in Washington D. C. , on March 14, 1943, departed peacefully from this world on Monday, November 13, 2023. Dennis, a devoted husband, is survived by his loving wife, Curlene Reamy, and their cherished children: daughters, Bobbi Jo; Jonathan Kipps, Patricia Lynn; husband John Martin, Whitney Dennise; husband Patrick Henderson, and son Christopher Crawford Reamy. His legacy also lives on through his adored grandchildren: Kelcie; husband George Gray, Ryan Henderson, Reagan Henderson, Carter Henderson, Madisyn Forloines, Tori Martin, Patrick Martin, Charlie Martin, and Christian Reamy. Dennis dedicated many years of his life to the service of others through his career at AT&T telephone company, retiring with a wealth of knowledge and experiences.
