Donna Elizabeth Emerson Bryant, 74, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, in El Paso, TX. Donna was born on October 20, 1949, in Albuquerque, NM to Edward and Dorothy Emerson. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service is pending at this time. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. From a young age, Donna learned to be a strong and resilient person. Having grown up in the foster care system, she arrived in Carlsbad via a Greyhound bus to begin her life here. She had a love for writing, and by the age of 12, she had her first poem published. Donna graduated from the Carlsbad High School in 1967 and was married to Raymond Bryant in June of 1967. She later got married to Claus Juers in 1977, and they moved to New York for a short time. Over the years, she worked as a server at multiple restaurants. While in Carlsbad, in the late 1980’s she worked as a gardener at the Cielo Vista Apartments. She worked at Wal Mart for 10 years starting in the 90’s, were she started many lifelong friendships. Donna was known to be one of the kindest people, who would go out of her way to help others. She also enjoyed traveling, taking care of her animals, and spending quality time with her friends and family. She will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Donna was preceded in death by her father, Edward Dee Emerson; mother, Dorothy Bell (Phillips) Emerson; stillborn daughter on January 16, 1978; three grandsons: Michael Bryant, Caleb Stockwell, and Justin Lackey; and ex-husband, Raymond Bryant. Donna is survived by her four children: Ricky Bryant of Carlsbad, NM; David Bryant and wife, Rhonda of Carlsbad, NM; Shelly Bryant Lackey and husband, Jason of Carlsbad, NM; and Desi Bohner and husband, Robert of Carlsbad, NM; eight grandchildren: Seth Bryant, Johnnie Bryant, Chance Stockwell, Jamie Bryant, Amy Lackey, Austin Lackey, Jeremy Lackey, and Michelle Bohner; seven great grandchildren; sister, Linda Cornett and husband, Gary of Carlsbad, NM; and numerous extended family and friends. Carmen Haddox

Our beautiful mother and matriarch, Carmen Haddox, passed away on February 22, 2024, after a brief illness. Born on November 18, 1929, to Dr. Hermilo Mendoza and Maria de Jesus Perez Mendoza, she grew up in El Paso and graduated from El Paso High School and Texas Western College with a Bachelor of Science degree. While working at the El Paso Public Library to pay for college, she met the love of her life, John H. Haddox. After getting married, Carmen and John lived in South Bend, IN, where he finished his PhD, and she was the Executive Secretary for the Department of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. She and John returned to El Paso where they raised their eleven children. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, John, her daughter, Margaret, and her sons, Thomas and Richard. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Christina Huber, John Haddox, Jr. (Elizabeth), Charles Haddox (Lizabeth), Raissa DeGraw (Colin), Grace Haddox (Basilio), Madeleine Haddox, Robert Haddox (Karissa), Timothy Haddox (Daniela), her grandchildren, Mark (Brenda), Ian (Laura), Stuart (Wendy), Nicholas, Haddox (Peter), Roy, Nicole (John), Jacob, Colin, Hudson, and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Olivia, Luna, Nina, Kaiya, Johnny, Alexander, Natalie, and Logan. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Mendoza and many nieces and nephews. Her children were her world, and she would do anything for them. She was always more concerned about others than she was for herself. She shared her Catholic faith with them, as well as her love of learning and spirit of service to others. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, and gardener. In her later years, she traveled extensively throughout Europe with her husband and several of her children. Carmen leaves behind a legacy of strength, wisdom, and compassion. She was much beloved, the heart and soul of the family, and will be forever missed! A special thank you to Father Henry Beck for his spiritual guidance and friendship in her later years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Haddox Endowment for Excellence in Philosophy at UTEP, The University of Texas at El Paso, Office of Institutional Advancement, Mike Loya Building, Suite 223, 500 W University Avenue, El Paso, TX 79902-9900. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 11, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Church 3729 Hueco Ave, El Paso, TX 79903.
