Eugene Thomas (Buddy) Woods - It is with great sadness that the family of Eugene Thomas (Buddy) Woods announce that after a courageous battle with cancer, he died at his home in Somers, New York on Saturday July 29, 2023 in his 95th year. Buddy will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 69 years, Anna (Venishnick), their children: Shawn (Mary) of Waterbury Center, Vermont, Scott (Marian) of Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada and Mary Hughes (John) of Carmel, New York; four grandchildren: Ian (Amber) of Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, Monica (Brian Marshall) of North Vancouver, BC, Canada, Colleen (Braden Lunn) of Seattle, Washington and Madison of Carmel, New York. Buddy is also survived by his six great-grandchildren: Abigail, Jennifer and Patrick Woods and Tessa, Benjamin and Brooklynn Marshall and nephew Timothy Hains. Bud is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Anastasia (Laverty) Woods, his sister Elizabeth Hains, his brother-in-law George Hains and his nephew Anthony Hains. Bud was born in Port Chester, NY, on April 12, 1929. During high school years, Bud was very much an athlete participating in sports that included football, softball, speed skating and diving. He earned his BS degree in transportation from New York University and attended graduate school at NYU. He served his country as a naval officer during the Korean war with tours of duty that included the US Naval base in Kodiak, Alaska where he met his beloved wife, Anna. He also proudly served as a Communications Officer onboard the attack aircraft carrier U. S. S. Intrepid CVA 11 where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant J. G. After discharge from the US Navy, Bud enjoyed a distinguished 37-year career with Union Carbide Corp. He worked for many years in New York City as Manager Ocean Transportation and in Toronto Canada as Director of Distribution for Union Carbide Canada. Buddy returned to the US and retired from the Union Carbide Danbury, CT, headquarters in 1991. Bud always enjoyed travelling during his career and this continued during his retirement years. Together, he and Anna explored Europe and cruised the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Hawaii was also one of their favorite destinations. He and Anna made a return trip to Kodiak in 2007, to revisit the naval base (now coast guard station) where they first met. He also took up golfing and playing the horses with his son Shawn. When his travel and golf years came to an end, he continued to keep busy with his large garden, many fruit trees, expansive yard and pool which were always a welcoming place for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to visit. After a hard day of work, dad retired to the back deck that he built by himself. "Not bad for a guy with a Liberal Arts degree. " There he would BBQ while enjoying a glass of California Cabernet and regale his children and their families with naval stories and travel adventures. He was a great storyteller. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Intrepid Museum Foundation would be appreciated. Please click on the link below for more information.Show more
