KERNAKLIAN, Paul Of Wellesley Hills, MA, died peacefully on June 18,2022 at the age of 89. Born in Binghampton, NY to Victoria and Nicholas; he leaves his sister Lovenia (Love) of Fairview, New Jersey; as well as two nephews: David of New Jersey and Gregory of Pennsylvania. Paul graduated from Syracuse University with an Art degree in 1955. As an All American tackle, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. With a prior commitment to the Air Force, Paul attended flight school. The Air Force assigned him to MIT Lincoln Labs at Hanscom Air Force base where he was involved with the first computerized air defense system. After leaving the military, Paul was employed by the Rand Corporation where he continued to work on our national air defense system. Paul decided to return to school where he earned both a Master's and PHD degree in Social Science from Syracuse. In 1967, Paul was hired as an Assistant Professor at the College of Basic Studies at Boston University. During the summers he would paint abstract figurative paintings from his loft on Charles St. in Boston. He was very popular with his students and became friends with many. Paul went on to teach at Wentworth Institute after teaching at B. U. After a few years at Wentworth, Paul made the leap of becoming a full-time studio painter. For the next 30 years, Paul sold his work, including paintings that now hang at Boston University. Private collectors from around the United States somehow found their way to Kernaklian Studios in Cambridge. During his career, Paul developed a technique of pouring paint onto canvases where he then sanded the paint to produce a jewel-like quality. In the style of the English painter Francis Bacon, Paul produced a triptych which was three paintings that were 5 x 6 feet of abstract figures. Paul was most proud of this work. Paul, living in an old Bell telephone switching station in Wellesley, had many friends who will miss his patience, understanding and loving nature. No service is planned at this time.
